Welcome to this second edition of Destination Malawi, showcasing the best of Malawi tourism to our

valued guests, to members of the travel trade and, indeed, to all who wish to sample the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’.

We at the Ministry are particularly happy with

the travel trade’s response to the launch edition

of Destination Malawi and I hope this second

edition, describing some of the new properties

and exciting tourism opportunities now on offer,

will reinforce the positive image of our country

in the eyes of would-be visitors.

exciting DevelopMents

There have been exciting developments in

Malawi since the first edition was launched at

the World Travel Market in London in 2010. We

have seen the completion of Malawi’s first-ever

international conference facility and five-star

hotel in the heart of the capital, Lilongwe,

and we believe this will fulfil an important

requirement in the MICE sector.

Other properties that have changed the tourism

landscape include various new hotels

in Lilongwe, including the five-star

Sogecoa Golden Peacock, with more

under construction and set for

completion in 18 months or so.

Efforts by the Government

to improve hotel services

have been enhanced by the

grading exercise that began

about two years ago. A

number of properties have

been awarded three or four

stars and others look set to

foreword

Exciting dEvElopmEntsON THE TOURISM FRONT

achieve five-star

status as the process of

grading continues.

More exciting still has been the progress made by

our country in wildlife management. The Majete

Wildlife Reserve is now home to Malawi’s Big

Five thanks to a private-public partnership with

African Parks, while efforts to increase wildlife

numbers in Liwonde National Park are bearing

fruit. The park now contains a variety of wildlife

and is also a sanctuary for the endangered black

rhino. Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve has also been

enhanced with the opening of two upmarket lodges

and the Government has programmes in place, with

private sector support, that will make Nkhotakota

one of the best parks in the country. In addition,

there are plans to refurbish Kasungu National Park –

only 200 km from Lilongwe – through restocking of

wildlife and conservation efforts.

priority sector

The Government now regards tourism as a

priority sector and will give the industry every

assistance in its efforts to contribute more to the

national economy in line with the Malawi Growth

and Development Strategy (MDGS).

The Ministry will continue to work with the private

sector to promote Malawi as a unique destination

of choice. I hope you will find this second edition

of Destination Malawi, whether in hard copy or

online, a useful guide to all you seek and require

as a valued guest in our country.

Isaac D. KatopolaDirector of Tourism Malawi Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife & Culture

Malawi, the warm heart of Africa, casts a spell on all who visit this land, long famous for offering the continent’s

friendliest welcome and its broadest smiles.

Surrounded by big-spending neighbours, Malawi

is sometimes overlooked by tourists planning to

visit Africa. As a result, Malawi tends to attract

more adventurous travellers and those who

really know Africa.

They come to seek out its hidden gems and

to enjoy uninterrupted and inexpensive game

viewing, to marvel at the continent’s third-

largest lake with more species of fish than

any other body of water, to savour the many

4

delights that this nation has to offer, to enjoy

its many and varied climates and to glimpse

its unbelievably diverse and sometimes unique

topography.

In terms of game viewing, Malawi offers truly

remarkable value. Although the Department of

National Parks & Wildlife (DNPW) announced a

rise in park fees in 2012, these charges remain

extremely low compared with other African

destinations (at just US$10 a day for foreign

visitors). Resident foreigners pay only US$7 a

day. A further $5 is charged for vehicles. Some

privately run parks may charge more.

WilDliFe

There are nine national parks and wildlife

reserves from which to choose – plus some

really special forest reserves for those who know

where to look. Thanks to the excellent work

undertaken on a limited budget by the DNPW,

its partners and the owners of various camps

and lodges, Malawi has made great strides with

the quality of its game viewing and is very much

a comeback destination.

The parks and reserves of Malawi are uncrowded

and a strict policy of limiting the number of

new camps and lodges is designed to ensure

that they stay this way. Visitors can enjoy game

viewing or birdwatching in private and this adds

to the experience.

Malawi has also sought to find alternative and

innovative solutions to wildlife depopulation

and poor park management. Today, two of

its parks and reserves are run, in effect, by

non-profit-making organisations other than the

DNPW. With external access to funding, these

organisations have been able to rehabilitate

otherwise run-down and almost abandoned

parks, restock them with game and build top

quality camps and lodges while working closely

with local people to make sure they benefit

directly from tourism.

QUAlity

There has been a marked improvement, too,

in the quality of accommodation outside the

national parks. In 2011 Mumbo Island, a hideaway

in Lake Malawi, was chosen as one of the Top

100 Hotels in the World in the UK’s Sunday

Times Travel Magazine.

Apart from game viewing, Malawi offers a

bewildering range of things to do for young and

active visitors, including mountain biking, horse-

riding, sailing, kayaking, diving, hill walking

and mountain climbing. Clearly, Malawi offers

something special for those seeking adventure.

If there is one event that stands out, then

Malawi’s thrilling Lake of Stars show is not to be

missed. Unfortunately, this festival on the shore

of Lake Malawi did not take place in 2012, but

the event is due to return with a flourish in 2013

and is likely to be even bigger and better than

before. Lake of Stars has been hailed as one of

the world’s most spectacular festivals, helping

to promote Malawi as a destination. The event

is a launchpad for local artists as well as raising

money for charity.

AttrAction

Another unusual attraction is the annual

25 km Porters’ Race up and down 3,000

metre high Mount Mulanje. Held in July

and organised by the Mulanje Mountain

Conservation Trust, this event attracted

nearly 400 runners in 2012.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to reach

Malawi directly by air from anywhere

outside of Africa. Both Blantyre and

Lilongwe are well served regionally, in

particular from Johannesburg, Addis

Ababa and Nairobi; but more needs to

be done to improve air links to points

beyond these three African hubs.

Whatever your reason for choosing to visit

Malawi, however, you will not be disappointed.

As in many countries, the administrative and commercial capitals of Malawi are in separate places. While lilongwe is the

nation’s rather prim-and-proper administrative capital, for those on business it is blantyre.

Blantyre is the nation’s fi nancial, commercial and

transport centre and the home of the Malawi

Stock Exchange. The central business district of

Blantyre is where it all happens in this otherwise

easygoing country.

Both by day and by night, Blantyre is much busier

and livelier than the nation’s capital. It has more

hotels, more restaurants and more bars than

Lilongwe, although these tend to be found out of

town rather than in the central business district.

Blantyre has a richer heritage

than Lilongwe. Named after the

birthplace in Scotland of the

explorer and missionary, David

Livingstone, Blantyre is one of the

oldest urban centres in eastern

and southern Africa. It gained

municipal status as long ago as

1895, while work on St Michael and

All Angels Church in Blantyre began

even earlier in 1888.

pleAsAnt cliMAte

Set in a range of hills at an altitude of about

1,000 metres, Blantyre has a rather pleasant

climate for most of the year except for two or

three months of heavy rain.

Blantyre is the perfect gateway to the unspoilt

south of Malawi. Many visitors fl y to Blantyre and

stay overnight before heading off to Liwonde and

Majete National Parks or to Zomba and Mulanje.

Blantyre is equally as well served as Lilongwe in

terms of air connections and the national carrier,

Air Malawi, has its head offi ce at the city’s

Chileka International Airport.

lilongwe is the administrative capital of Malawi and, like all such cities, it enjoys a certain serenity and orderliness.

Although it has been the nation’s capital only since 1975, lilongwe is a fast-growing city with a population of 750,000. in addition to government

employees, it attracts people working for international organisations and non-governmental organisations. As a result, the city is more

cosmopolitan than any other in Malawi, providing foreign visitors with a rather agreeable expatriate lifestyle. Advantages

include no traffi c jams, little crime, some decent restaurants, shopping and easy access to the natural delights of the central region.

A ‘must see’ destination for visitors is lilongwe’s 120 hectare wildlife park, a delightful and well-run spot located in the centre of the city. visitors can take heart from the excellent work undertaken by the wildlife centre in caring for rescued, orphaned and badly treated wild

animals.

the city’s many government buildings are a key attraction, including a new chinese-built parliament building.

lilongwe is an excellent overnight stop for travellers off ering a range of excellent hotels.

Lake Malawi is Africa’s third-largest body of water, covering an area roughly equivalent in size to Albania. Measuring 580 km in

length and about 75 km in breadth at its widest point, the lake plays an important role in the everyday life of the nation as a source of food, a means of transport and a major attraction for international visitors.

The shoreline of Lake Malawi is shared by

Mozambique and Tanzania. The largest portion

of the lake belongs to Malawi, but about 25 per

cent of the surface area is part of Mozambique.

The lake has two inhabited islands – Likoma,

with its incongruous cathedral, and Chizumulu

LAKe MALAwI

thE lAkE of lifE

– both of which are in the Mozambican part

of the lake but in fact belong to Malawi. Both

have backpacker-style accommodation and are

served by the lake’s regular ferry service (see

separate story).

concentrAteD

Most of the lake’s tourism activities are

concentrated in Monkey Bay, 206 km from

Lilongwe, with its broad sandy beaches and

world-class diving, and the adjacent Cape

Maclear Nature Reserve. There is a wide choice

of hotels, lodges, backpacker hostels and camps

in and around Monkey Bay as well as along the

shoreline at, for example, Nkopola. In addition,

there are properties such as Mumbo Island

Camp, accessible from the shore by boat, and

one or two fi ne places on Likoma Island.

Another key tourism spot is Nkhata Bay, a popular

place for backpackers and diving enthusiasts.

yAchting lake Malawi is blessed with one cruising yacht. operated by

Danforth yachting and based at cape Maclear, yacht charter is another and rather leisurely option for those wishing to see the lake.

Danforth also runs a luxury lodge, focusing on sailing and water sports, from which guests can start and fi nish their yachting trips.

Danforth has added a new seven-night package, starting at cape Maclear and fi nishing across the lake at likoma island. by prior arrangement, guests can dive off the yacht if they have an active diving certifi cate snorkelling is always an option and the yacht visits some great spots especially for this particular activity.

Lake Malawi is home to hundreds of species of fi sh, many of which are endemic. What’s more, the lake contains warm, crystal-clear

fresh water that is just about perfect for diving and provides a fascinating underwater landscape of unusual rock formations, caves and cliff edges.

Many consider Lake Malawi to be one of the best

freshwater dive locations in the world with the

bonus that dives here start from an altitude of

500 metres.

For those who don’t want

to dive but are keen to see the

amazing fi sh, most lakeside

properties have snorkelling

equipment for use by guests.

speciAlist

The leading specialist dive operators are

generally located in and around Nkhata Bay but

also operate from bases in Cape Maclear.

Dive schools with PADI-qualifi ed instructors

off er a range of courses from half a day to four

days for beginners as well as refresher and

advanced courses for the more experienced.

LAKe MALAwI

lAkE mAlAwi fErry sErvicEone of the joys of visiting lake Malawi is the chance to travel on board the 350-passenger ‘ilala’, which connects various points on a fi xed weekly service from its home port of Monkey bay.

this service has operated since 1951 and the ferry trip is a ‘must do’ journey for the adventurous and the unhurried. time has stood still on board the ‘ilala’, which operates a somewhat elastic timetable.

the ‘ilala’ leaves Monkey bay every Friday morning heading north to chipoka, then to nkhotakota, Metangula (in Mozambique), cobue, likoma and chizumulu island and fi nally to nkhata bay. the ship then heads south back to Monkey bay making calls at the same places as the vessel did on its voyage north.

only Monkey bay, chipoka and nkhata bay have dock facilities. At most ‘ports’ of call the ‘ilola’ stands off and passengers are embarked and disembarked in makeshift tenders.

the ferry off ers four levels of accommodation, comprising the ‘luxurious’ and air conditioned captain’s cabin; fi rst class, which just means access to the top deck and is mostly favoured by foreign passengers, with mattresses for hire; second class, consisting of a bench on a lower deck amid the cargo; and the very basic third class, which is just sleeping in the passageways.

the ‘ilala’ has a fairly basic restaurant. staff take orders for meals from passengers. Hot showers are available on the cabin deck.

in addition to the ‘ilala’, a motorised dhow operates between nkhata bay and Mbamba bay in tanzania.

kAsUngU nAtionAl pArkKasungu is Malawi’s second-largest national

park, covering 2,316 sq km. Located about

170 km north of Lilongwe, it lies alongside the

Zambian border on its western side.

The park has an average elevation of about

1,000 metres above sea level and the landscape

consists mainly of miombo woodland. These

wooded areas are interspersed with river

channels known as dambos. The park’s wider

rivers, the Dwanga, Lingadzi and Lifupa, are all

populated by sizeable pods of hippo.

preDAtors

Best known for its largish herds of elephant,

Kasungu is also home to buff alo, sable, roan,

kudu, hartebeest, impala and zebra. There

are no big cats in the park. Predators

here consist of hyena, occasional wild

dog and the rare and nocturnal serval.

It is generally thought that the

best time to visit for game

viewing is August to January,

when the animals stay close

the main rivers. November

and December are ideal for

birdwatching, while June to

September is just about perfect

for walking safaris. February, March

and April can be diffi cult times as

seasonal rains can make access roads

and park tracks impassable.

lEngwE nAtionAl pArkLengwe National Park covers 900 sq km and is

situated just 50 km from Blantyre. In fact, it’s a

perfect day trip from Malawi’s commercial capital.

The park comprises woodland and thicket, but

in the east of the park there is a well marked

network of tracks.

Outside the rainy season, game viewing can

be remarkably good as the park has only a few

sources of water and these act as a magnet for

animals. There are also man-made waterholes

near the main gate.

Lengwe is best known as the location for

Malawi’s biggest population of the spiral-horned

nyala, a species of antelope not found in the

north of the country. In fact, Lengwe is the

nyala’s most northerly habitat.

NATIoNAL PArKS

lAkE mAlAwi nAtionAl pArklake Malawi national park is diff erent from other parks in that it protects fi sh rather than animals. it is also Malawi’s only natural Unesco World Heritage site.

the park does not cover the entire lake but protects just 94 sq km. it is concentrated at the southern end and includes a number of islands.

lake Malawi is thought to be at least three million years old and many of its fi sh species are unique, which makes it an attractive area for divers. the lake contains between 500 and 1,000 species with the vast majority being cichlids.

Apart from its unique fi sh, the park’s other main attraction is an 800-year-old baobab tree said to have been favoured by the explorer and missionary Dr David livingstone as a shady spot for meetings and sermons. in addition, the graves of fi ve of livingstone’s contemporaries can be found in the park.

mAjEtE wildlifE rEsErvEMajete Wildlife Reserve is situated in the Lower

Shire Valley and covers an area of about 700 sq

km. The reserve enjoys a diversity of vegetation

including miombo woodland in the hills to the

west and dry savanna in the east.

Majete is one of Africa’s true success stories

– namely, the wonderful transformation of

a heavily poached and exhausted national

park into a thriving wildlife area with good

accommodation and a fast-growing animal

population. It remains largely undiscovered by

tourists and is a well kept secret.

jointly MAnAgeD

Since 2003 Majete has been jointly managed by

the Department of National Parks and Wildlife

(DNPW) and the non-profit-making organisation

African Parks, which has a 25-year concession.

The DNPW and AP led the fight back against

heavily armed poachers and wholesale

extermination of wildlife.

Prior to the arrival of AP, and in a comparatively

short space of time in the late 1980s and early

1990s, Majete lost all its elephant, buffalo, sable,

liwondE nAtionAl pArkliwonde national park is located 140 km north of limbe at the southern end of lake Malawi. the broad shire river – Malawi’s longest and the only outlet from lake Malawi – flows through the park, providing an ideal environment for hippo and crocodile.

At just 548 sq km, the park is relatively small but can boast a high concentration of game (including re-introduced black rhino) along with highly diverse landscapes.

the park contains several species of antelope, such as sable, impala, kudu and waterbuck, as well as being home to Malawi’s largest population of elephant. in addition, visitors can see black rhino, buffalo, zebra and even lion, which are just being reintroduced as the park slowly regains its big Five status.

Mopane woodlands, mixed with candelabra trees, cover the eastern half of the park, while small areas of miombo can be found in the south and east of the park. palm savanna and numerous baobab trees grow on the extensive floodplains, where dense tropical vegetation is in evidence.

sadly, some of the park’s species were hunted out in the 1980s and 1990s, when buffalo, black rhino, lichtenstein’s hartebeest, zebra, roan and eland all disappeared. they have since been reintroduced, but so far only within a fenced area. since April 2012 there are even rhino tracking trips in the park with the armed rhino protection team.

liwonde is a top destination for birdwatchers. ranked among the best sites in southern Africa, the park claims 300 species including a number of very rare birds. Among them are böhm’s bee-eater, the African skimmer, the palm-nut vulture, the white-backed night heron and Dickinson’s kestrel. the very rare brown-breasted barbet can also be spotted and liwonde is the only place in Malawi to see the delightful lillian’s lovebirds. in fact, the list goes on and on.

the park has two main lodges, Mvuu and chinguni, from where guests have a choice of game viewing, walking tours and boat or canoe trips.

mwAbvi wildlifE rEsErvEAt just 350 sq km, the remote Mwabvi Wildlife reserve is the smallest of Malawi’s national parks, located in the far south close to the border with Mozambique. in fact, the park is smaller still, because only about 135 sq km is protected by its concessionaire, the charity project African Wilderness (pAW).

pAW has an agreement with Malawi’s Department of national parks & Wildlife (DnpW) to run Mwabvi and to engage in conservation, ecotourism and poverty reduction programmes. prior to pAW’s arrival in 2007, Mwabvi was in danger of being completely deforested and lost as a wildlife area.

Future plans include the completion of a 2.6 metre high electric fence around the entire reserve to ensure the protection of wildlife and the introduction of all big Five animals.

Accommodation at Mwabvi is provided deep inside the reserve by the newish six-room njati lodge. there is also chipembere camp, located close to the reserve’s main entrance. the camp has a dormitory, campsite and facilities to hook up a motorhome. there is also a campsite at Migudu, inside the reserve, which has been refurbished recently. pAW manages all three sites.

eland, zebra and hartebeest as well

as significant numbers of other large animals

such as hippo, warthog, bush pig, zebra,

kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, grey duiker,

klipspringer and spotted hyena.

Now the area has been largely restocked with

a total of more than 2,500 animals in 12 species

being introduced, including leopard and rhino. The

reserve is protected by a 142 km perimeter fence

that has more or less stopped the poaching.

rAre sigHt

Previously, lion had not been seen in the park

since the 1980s and had been a rare sight

during the 20 years before that. But with the

release in August 2012 of two male and two

female lions from South Africa, Majete has once

again regained its position as a Big Five park.

The arrival of these four lions has more or less

completed the restocking of the reserve.

An airstrip, now under construction, will improve

access and the monitoring of wildlife.

The luxury Mkulumadzi Lodge, comprising eight

chalets, provides accommodation in Majete, while

AP’s own Thawale Lodge offers six double and

twin-tented chalets, all en-suite, each with its own

private veranda overlooking the waterhole.

nkhotAkotA wildlifE rEsErvEone of Malawi’s lesser-known parks is the 1,800 sq km nkhotakota Wildlife reserve, one of the last undiscovered game-viewing destinations in Africa.

now clearly on the comeback trail, this wilderness park is only about 30 km from the shores of lake Malawi. At present, visitors can expect to see elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and sable and there are also plans to reintroduce species such as giraffe and even black rhino (found at only two locations in Malawi). in order to improve the gene pool, additional stocks of lion and leopard are also on the horizon.

this restocking and reintroduction process is being encouraged with the help of government-backed funding in order to create a special sanctuary. About 3,000 animals are to be translocated to the park during 2012.

the park is home to over 280 recorded species of birds and it is believed that further exploration of this largely uncharted area will reveal many more. With a wealth of natural wonders along with little-seen landscapes, nkhotakota is truly an undiscovered gem.

Many visitors to nkhotakota choose to view wildlife on foot accompanied by a trained guide. Furthermore, the bua river is an ideal place to catch mpasa (lake salmon) and fly and freshwater fishing trips can be organised by tongole Wilderness lodge with drinks and a picnic included.

Alternatively, there is excellent hiking – even to the 3,000 metre summit of Mount Kasukusuku – as more tracks are opened up, while canoeing and even white-knuckle ‘rapid runs’ are available during the rainy season as well as fly camping for the more adventurous.

nkhotakota Wildlife reserve will soon benefit from a new airstrip now being constructed by tongole.

NATIoNAL PArKS

nyikA nAtionAl pArkSet at high altitude on a plateau nearly 500

km north of Lilongwe, Nyika National Park

covers 3,134 sq km and is Malawi’s largest game

reserve. This wild, untouched and sometimes

mist-covered place is the only Afromontane big

game park in south-central Africa.

Nyika off ers the chance of some rare and

exciting sightings of both animals and birdlife

and this has attracted a growing number of

visitors to the park. In addition to pure game-

watching, however, they come to Nyika for

activities such as trekking, mountain biking and

horse-riding.

With its grassland vegetation, the park is

home to several species of antelope, including

eland, sable, roan and duiker, as well as

sizeable populations of Crawshay’s zebra and

Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.

increAseD sigHtings

Elephant sightings are on the increase, too, with

herds of up to 80 being reported, but these are

confi ned largely to the northern edge of the

park where the altitude is lower. Herds of buff alo

and very small groups of black rhino and even

wild dog can be found at lower levels. Visitors

may also see bushbuck, southern reedbuck,

spotted hyena, side-striped jackal and warthog.

Leopard sightings are still fairly common in

Nyika, in contrast with other parts of Malawi.

Lion can be seen, too, but mostly at lower levels.

The rainy season attracts an abundance of

migratory birdlife and Nyika has recorded over

400 species. Rare birds include the black-

bellied korhaan, the pallid and Montagu’s

harriers, Denham’s bustard, the wattled crane

and, endemic to the park, the red-winged

francolin. Also worth viewing are the augur

buzzard, mountain cisticola, mountain marsh

whydah and blue swallow.

In addition to fauna, various fl owers and plants are

unique to Nyika including 11 species of orchid.

Visitors can fl y into the nearby airstrip and

the upgraded Chelinda Camp, which sets

a high standard of accommodation

with four two-bedroom chalets and

six other twin-bed rooms.

The Nyika-Vwaza Trust,

embracing the nearby Vwasa

marsh area, is an independent

organisation involved in

environmental and wildlife

conservation in and around Nyika.

vwAsA mArsh wildlifE rEsErvEvwasa Marsh Wildlife reserve is home to perhaps the widest variety of large mammals in Malawi as well as an eclectic range of lowland bird species. located not far from nyika national park, the reserve is only 90 km from popular nhkata bay and closer still to Mzuzu.

As its name suggests, the reserve consists of low-lying plains with woodland among its marshy areas. its water source is the nyika plateau.

the reserve covers about 900 sq km with its western boundary lying on the border with Zambia. Wildlife is free to move seasonally between the reserve and Zambia’s north luangwa national park. the southern and eastern edges of the reserve are fenced, with villagers living close to the reserve boundaries.

the reserve has an elephant population with an estimated size of perhaps 150. other plains game such as greater kudu, roan, lichtenstein’s hartebeest, impala and warthog are also in residence, with pods of hippo living in lake Kazuni. buff alo can be seen from time to time, while lion and leopard are known to frequent the reserve on occasion as they drift across from Zambia.

Unfortunately, vwasa Marsh has lost some species including sable. over time and with better management, the reserve may be restocked, enabling it to support larger populations of wildlife than at present. Although it is not a big Five park, vwasa off ers other compensations like solitude, engaging scenery and a relaxing atmosphere.

Furthermore, the reserve is hard to reach because of poor road access, especially in the rainy season, and as a result it currently receives few visitors.

there is good birdwatching here, with the marshy area attracting the likes of goliath herons, open-billed storks and pearl-spotted (and many other) owls. the rare white-winged starling can also be seen.

the reserve has two small camps: the self-catering Kazuni camp and the more luxurious Kazuni safari camp, accommodating some 12 guests.

Visitors to Malawi are naturally attracted to the country’s magnifi cent national parks, but it’s often forgotten that this nation

is home to a series of truly remarkable forest reserves. the better the reserves are:

NTCHISI foreST reSerVe: The 75 sq km

Ntchisi Forest Reserve is one of southern Africa’s

last remaining tropical rainforests. Perched on

the side of Mount Ntchisi and with superb

views across the valley below, this little

known and little visited reserve is an

undiscovered corner of paradise.

Ntchisi is home to a number of rare

birds, but most visitors come to

experience the cool of the rainforest,

which lies at between 1,500 and 1,700

metres above sea level. Ntchisi also

has populations of Samango monkey,

baboon, hyena, various antelope, civet

and serval. The reserve has a network of

tracks, while guides are on hand to take

visitors into the forest.

THUMA foreST reSerVe: Located 80 km

from Lilongwe, and with an elevation of between

600 and 1,550 metres above sea level, Thuma

Forest Reserve covers a rugged area of 197 sq km.

Thuma had formerly been under threat from

poaching and deforestation, but since 1996

the Wildlife Action Group has worked hard to

restore the reserve to its former glory. Today,

it is arguably the best run and best protected

forest reserve in Malawi. Unusually for a forest

reserve, there are elephant and buff alo plus

leopard, spotted hyena, greater kudu, bushbuck,

klipspringer, Sharpe’s grysbok, common duiker,

baboon, vervet monkey, bushbaby, genet

and civet, honey badger, warthog, bushpig,

porcupine and other smaller species.

MALAwI’S foreST reSerVeS

dEEp-in-thE-forEst sEcrEts

MULANJe foreST reSerVe: Run by the

Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust, the

Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve covers about

500 sq km including the Mulanje Massif, which

rises to 3,002 metres.

Rainfall levels are high during the wet season

and this, combined with the altitude, creates an

unusual ecosystem with many rare and endemic

creatures and plant species. These include birds

such as the white-winged apali, the white and

rust coloured thyolo alethe and reptiles such as

the dwarf chameleon, the squeaker frog and the

unusual burrowing skink.

MISUKU HILLS foreST reSerVeS: Located

in the far north, the two Misuku Hill Forest

Reserves cover an area of 310 sq km, are a

magnet for birdwatchers and botanists.

The two reserves are Mugesse and Wilindi-

Matipa. Mugesse comprises montane rainforest,

while Wilindi-Matipa consists of lower-level

forest. The Misuku Hills are Malawi’s most diverse

in terms of fl ora, with over 150 species of trees.

UZUMArA foreST reSerVe: Located in

the North Viphya mountains, at between 1,600

and 1,700 metres above sea level, Uzumara

Forest Reserve lies close to the shore of Lake

Malawi. Uzumara contains over 100 species of

birds, many of which are also resident in nearby

Nyika National Park.

These are, perhaps, the most interesting of the

reserves, but there are at least 10 others dotted

throughout Malawi. Some of these have suff ered

from deforestation and the impact of growing

local populations, resulting in cleared woodland.

Most other reserves are of more interest to

birdwatchers, while opportunities for game

viewing are limited. These reserves are no less

delightful to visit. If time allows, why not seek

out some of the lesser-known spots and enjoy

having an entire reserve to yourself.

At over 2,000 metres above sea level, the Zomba plateau forms part of the shire Highlands beyond the southern end of

lake Malombe.

The plateau is a refreshingly cool and tranquil

upland area – a pleasant mix of dense forest

and farmland that stands proud from the

surrounding Phalombe plain. Enjoying its own

micro-climate, Zomba offers a

combination of rare plants and spectacular views.

Zomba town on the plateau was once, and

somewhat improbably, Malawi’s former capital

city. A road runs up to Zomba town and many

visitors take a taxi up – thus avoiding a six-hour

hike – and then opt for a leisurely and scenic

walk back.

gUiDes

Focal point of Zomba town is the Sunbird Ku

Chawe Inn, a great place to enjoy a drink and a

good meal. Visitors planning to venture beyond

Zomba and into the surrounding forest, with its

dense vegetation, are advised to hire a guide. There

is no lack of young locals eager to act as guides.

WAterFAlls

Once out of Zomba, visitors are presented with

a series of spectacular waterfalls, of which the

most impressive is Williams Falls. In addition, the

lookout points at Queen’s View and Emperor’s

View provide a spectacular vista of southern

Malawi and the landscape all the way to

Mozambique. Visitors also have an opportunity to

climb to the top of Chawe Mountain, famed for its

delicious wild raspberries and gooseberries.

Accommodation is available at the delightful

37-room Sunbird Ku Chawe Inn, the Zomba Forest

Lodge or, for budget travellers, The Trout Farm.

tEA And coffEE EstAtEsMany consider Malawi’s tea and coffee producing area to be the most scenic in the country. its neatly trimmed bushes and rolling hills, still dotted with colonial-style estates, are the stuff of picture postcards.

it is over 100 years since europeans first came to this part of the shire Highlands, known as thyolo, attracted by its pleasant countryside and agreeable climate. set at altitude and overlooked by the brooding presence of Mount Mulanje, the area is known for its cool fresh air.

Aside from viewing the working tea and coffee plantations and admiring the countryside, the main attraction of thyolo for visitors is an opportunity to stay in one of the colonial houses. Among the best known is the grand Huntingdon House, built in the 1920s and set in delightful surroundings. the house has been owned by the same family since the 1920s and still forms part of a working plantation.

elsewhere in the area, built in the 1920s and used by the estate’s general manager until recent times, charming chawani accepts a maximum of just 10 guests. the property is surrounded by subtropical forests and is a favourite with birdwatchers. chawani is located on the satemwa tea estate. guests are welcome to visit the factory and taste the export-quality tea.

Another favourite is the lujeri tea estate, where two guest houses are available, complete with a housekeeper and a chef. lujeri tea estate is a working tea plantation in the foothills of Mount Mulanje. guests can explore the foothills of Mulanje, the waterfalls and pools of Mbiya and the blue lagoon, where the lujeri river runs over rocks into a crystal-clear pool.

with another three being added in the second

phase to meet high demand on the M1 route.

In the last quarter of 2007 the company

acquired 12 new buses, increasing its fleet to 18.

In the first quarter of 2008 it added 22 standard
