Gwinnett’s Nesbitt Named Sher-Wood HockeyECHL Player Of The Week

ECHLPress Release - October 26, 2010

PRINCETON, NJ – Derek Nesbitt of the Gwinnett Gladiators was the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for Oct. 18-24.

Nesbitt had five goals, six points and was plus-7 as the Gladiators went 2-0-0 last week, improving their overall record to 3-0-1.

Nesbitt tallied three goals, including two shorthanded, and added and an assist as part of a plus-5 effort in Friday’s 6-2 win over South Carolina. He added two more goals, including the game winner, in a 5-2 win over Florida on Saturday.

The 28-year-old is third in the ECHL with five goals and is tied for third with eight points.

Nesbitt has 230 points (83g, 147a) in 204 regular season games and 35 points (15g, 20a) in 43 Kelly Cup Playoff games with Gwinnett, Idaho and Toledo. He also has appeared in 123 American Hockey League games with Rockford, San Antonio and Manitoba scoring 59 points (27g, 32a).

Devils’ Power Play Paces ECHL

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Devils have the highest rated power play unit in the ECHL, clicking at a rate of 36.8 percent (7 for 19) in four games played. The next highest rated power play belongs to the Kalamazoo Wings who are operating at 33.3 percent. The Gwinnett power play ranks eighth, as the Gladiators have five power play goals in 21 opportunities (23.8 percent) this season.

Trenton’s penalty kill is also operating at a high rate of success, denying the Wheeling Nailers on all eight of their power play chances in two games last week.

Olivier Magnan Joins New Jersey Devils

Olivier Magnan, who played in 45 games for Trenton during the 2006-07 season, made his debut with the New Jersey Devils on Oct.21 at the Bell Centre in Montreal against the Canadiens, becoming the 446th ECHL player to play in the NHL. He is the 19th player to play in Trenton and the NHL, and the third player to play for Trenton and New Jersey.

During his Trenton career, Magnan scored 10 points with one goal and nine assists, and played in one Kelly Cup Playoff game. Through action on Oct. 28, Magnan has played in four games with New Jersey, recording two penalty minutes and playing on the team’s top defensive pair on Oct. 27 at San Jose.

DEVILS DROP TWO ROAD GAMES VS. NAILERSThe Trenton Devils were in action twice this past weekend, dropping a pair

of decisions to their Eastern Conference rival, the Wheeling Nailers. Saturday night’s matchup, a 4-1 Nailers’ victory, was played at the

Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA, the former home of the Johnstown Chiefs. Joey Haddad opened up the scoring for Wheeling, giving the Nailers a 1-0 lead at 11:16 of the first period, just seconds after the home team finished killing off the final seconds of an Andrew Orpik cross-checking penalty. The score remained 1-0 until the final minute of the period when Jeff Prough knotted the score on the power play at 19:17. Just seconds before Prough’s marker, defenseman Justin Pender had blazed a one-timer off the post. Prough, camped in front of Nailers’ goaltender Mattias Modig the whole time, was in perfect position for a rebound, as the ricochet off the iron landed directly on his stick, giving him a golden opportunity which the Farmington Hills, MI. native had no problem depositing for his second goal of the season.

However the score didn’t stay tied for long, as the Nailers’ Andrew Lord made the score 2-1 with a power play tally just 1:33 into the second period. The Devils had been a man down when Kory Nagy was called for a controversial goaltender interference penalty with 22 seconds remaining in the first period. The Nailers took advantage of the fortuitous call, with Lord’s second goal of the season coming with just five seconds remaining in Nagy’s penalty.

With the Devils trailing 2-1 entering the third period, Tony Zancanaro was flagged for a two minute, high-sticking penalty at 1:25. Although the Devils were able to kill off the infraction, Wheeling’s Joey Haddad buried his second goal of the game just seconds after the penalty expired to give the Nailers a 3-1 lead. Midway through the third period, the Devils had appeared to score a goal which would have cut the Nailers’ lead back down to a single goal, but referee Keith Kaval called the play back; as Trenton forward Jean-Sebastien Berube had the puck past Wheeling goalie Mattias Modig with his gloved hand. With the score still 3-1, Doug Rogers put the game away with an insurance marker at 11:55. Rogers beat Caruso on a breakaway, finishing off a nifty backhand-to-forehand move after alluding defenseman Justin Pender, who desperately tried to, but could not catch up to the former Harvard Crimson, whose goal was his first in professional hockey. Andrew Lord’s assist on Rogers’ goal was his third point of the game.

Swedish goaltender, Mattias Modig, was named the game’s first star by turning aside 29 of 30 Trenton shots in what was his first-career ECHL victory. Dave Caruso took the loss, making 41 saves on 45 shots.

Just as was the case when the Devils and Nailers met on Saturday night, Sunday afternoon’s game began with Wheeling’s Joey Haddad opening up the scoring, beating Jeff Lerg at 8:41 of the first period. But despite falling behind early, Trenton stormed back to tie the score just 1:11 later, when on the power play, Jean-Sebastien Berube deflected a Justin Pender point shot past Patrick Killeen for his second marker of the season. The score remained tied until 18:40 of the first period, when with the teams playing four-against-four, Ben Street scored his first-career professional goal for the Nailers, beating Lerg off of a feed by Andrew Lord. The assist was Lord’s fourth point of the two-game weekend series.

Seemingly building off their go-ahead goal late in the first period, the Nailers carried the play early in the second, recording seven of the first 10 shots of the middle stanza. But despite the Nailers’ surge in the first half of the second period, it was the Devils who opened the period’s scoring

when Trevor Kell buried his third goal of the campaign past last week’s ECHL Goaltender-of-the-Week, Patrick Killeen, off of a slick feed by Tony Zancanaro. Zancanaro’s assist was his fifth point of the 2010-11 season. As if the satisfaction of their game-tying goal wasn’t enough, the Devils went to work following Kell’s goal, taking the play to the Nailers in the ensuing minutes, which led to a Ryan Hayes power play goal just 1:33 later. Hayes’ go-ahead goal was his second of the season, and was assisted by Jeff Prough and Jean-Sebastien Berube. But as soon as it appeared that the momentum had swung firmly in the Devils’ favor, the Nailers re-tied the score at 3-3 just before the period ended, when David Marshall took a pass from Kris Vernarsky at the bottom of the right wing circle, and whipped a quick shot past Lerg for his fourth goal in his first five games in a Wheeling uniform.

Early in the third period, the Devils took the play to the Nailers, however Kris Vernarsky gave Wheeling the lead, 4-3, at 13:28. David Marshall had broken free of the Devils’ defense, came streaking down the left wing side and fired a hard, low shot which Jeff Lerg kicked out directly to Vernarsky who was driving hard to the net. The goal by Vernarsky, a former Toronto Maple Leaf draft choice, was his first in the ECHL since 2004-05 when he was a member of the Florida Everblades. Following Vernarsky’s goal which made the score 4-3 in favor of the Nailers, the Devils mounted an onslaught of shots against Patrick Killeen, but were continually turned away, until Ryan Hayes knocked a tricky shot from behind the goal line off of Killeen’s back into the net to draw the teams into a dead heat at 4-4 with just 1:42 remaining in regulation. But just when it seemed that the game was destined to head into overtime, Andrew Lord beat Lerg in the game’s final minute with a top-shelf shot right off of a faceoff in the Trenton end, for what turned out to be the eventual game-winning goal.

The Devils, with their goaltender pulled, mustered a spirited flurry in the game’s final few seconds, but were unable to come up with another equalizer. With the 5-4 loss, the Devils fall to 1-3 as they try to become the first team since the 2000-01 South Carolina Stingrays to win the Kelly Cup after starting the season with just one win in their first four games.

The Wheeling Nailers will play 10 home games at Johnstown’s War Memorial, inluding 4 vs. Trenton.

During the 2009-10 season, the Trenton Devils opposed the Gwinnett Gladiators on three occasions, winning once, and losing twice. All three contests were held on the Gladiators’ home ice, The Arena at Gwinnett Center, in Duluth, GA.

In the team’s first matchup, on December 9, 2009, the Devils got their lone win of the season against the Gladiators, winning by a score of 4-3. The Devils’ offense was paced by four different goal scorers as Trevor Kell, Dan Eves, Brett Wilson and Justin Pender each found the back of the net for Trenton. However, the star of the game for the Devils was goaltender Dave Caruso, who made 53 saves on 56 shots against him. Tom

Zanoski, Adam Berti and Patrick Gallivan were the goal scorers for Gwinnett, and goaltender David Brown took the loss, allowing four goals on 33 shots.

The teams’ final two contests of the season took place as part of a two-game series on Saturday, March 20, and Sunday, March 21. In the first game, Matt Francis broke a 1-1 tie with two consecutive goals in the first period, giving the Gladiators a lead that they would not relinquish, as they went on to a 6-4 victory. Danny Taylor got the win in the nets, stopping 25 shots on 29 Trenton shots. In the loss, Trevor Kell, Tony Zancanaro, Dan Charleston and Chris Poli scored

goals for the Devils. In the second game of the two-game series,

the third and final game of the season series, the Gladiators won 4-2, rebounding from a 2-1 deficit in the second period with three unanswered goals by Dan Sullivan, Adam Berti and Matt Caruana. The key to the Gladiators’ victory was their power play, which clicked for three goals on eight opportunities. The Devils did not score a power play goal in four opportunities. David Brown got the win in goal by stopping 28 of 30 shots, and Dave Caruso took the loss, surrendering three goals on 31 shots.

TRENTON DEVILS (1-3-0-0, 2pts) vs GWINNETT GLADIATORS (3-0-0-1, 7pts) Game 5 ◦ Thursday, October 28, 2010 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

The Trenton Devils and Gwinnett Gladiators face off in the first game of a six-game season series Thursday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. This is the first time the clubs will play each other this season. Thursday night’s game will be the first-half of a two-day, two-game series, with both games being held on the Devils’ home ice. The Devils enter action with a record of 1-3, coming of two consecutive losses against the Wheeling Nailers last weekend. The Devils’ leading scorers through four games played are Trevor Kell (3g, 4a) and Ryan Ginand (2g, 3a).

The Gladiators skate into Trenton off an undefeated homestand during which they exploded for 11 goals in two games by defeating the South Carolina Stingrays 6-2, and by disposing of the Florida Everblades by a 5-2 margin. In the two victories, Derek Nesbitt had a total of five goals, including a hat trick in the Oct. 22 game against South Carolina, and Aaron Bendickson contributed with five assists. Bendickson will not be in uniform against Trenton - his plus-8 performance so far this season earned him a call-up to the AHL’s Rochester Americans Wednesday. To fill Bendickson’s roster spot, the Gladiators have received forward Michael Forney from the AHL Chicago Wolves. Puck drop for both games is set for 7:00 p.m.

Did you know that first-year Devil, Taylor Vichorek, is the son of Mark Vichorek, a twelfth round (245th overall) draft selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982? The elder Vichorek had a 665-game college and minor league career which spanned 13 years from 1982-1995.

Young Taylor also has connections to New Jersey Devils’ captain, Jamie Langenbrunner, whom he grew up on the same street as in Minnesota. Taylor admits that Langenbrunner’s example has taught him the work ethic and

attitude needed to have a career in professional hockey. And Vichorek should know the 13-year NHL veteran Langenbrunner well. Back in Minnesota, Taylor’s aunt used to baby-sit Jamie as a kid!

Q: Favorite team growing up? Favorite player?A: St. Louis Blues, Al MacInnis.

Q: What are you being for Halloween:A: I don’t know if I’m going to get to do anything. One year I was The Flash and that was pretty good, so I’d be up for doing that again for sure.

Q: What’s your favorite Halloween candy?A: Milky Way.

Q: If you could have any super-power, what would it be?A: Super-human speed.

Q: If there was a movie about your life, who would play you?A: Kevin Nash, the old pro-wrestler. He’s a big guy, like me.

Q: If you could meet three people, living or deceased, who would they be?A: Al MacInnis because he was my favorite player. Even though I already have met him, I’ll say Kevin Nash. And for the third one, even though he isn’t real, I’ll say The Flash because he is kind of awesome.

Q&A w/ TAYLOR VICHOREKThe Gwinnett Gladiators enter 2010-11 for their

eighth season in the ECHL, coming off of a 31-33-5-3 (70 pts.) record last season, last in the South Division, and 11th in the American Conference, stranding them seven points shy of a playoff birth.

The Gladiators are off to a strong start in 2010-11 and enter the week undefeated in regulation time, sporting a record of 3-0-1. They march into Trenton on a three-game winning streak.

Last weekend, the Gladiators swept a two-game homestand with victories against South Carolina and Florida at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. In their 6-2 victory over South Carolina Oct. 22, the Gladiators were led offensively by Derek Nesbitt who recorded a hat trick in the contest, and by Aaron Bendickson who contributed with three of his ECHL-leading (tied with Elmira’s Brock McBride) seven assists. Chris Carrozzi earned the victory in goal, making 26 of 28 saves.

In the second half of their two-game homestand, Gwinnett triumphed over the Everblades by breaking a 2-2 tie in the third period by erupting for three unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory. As was the case in their victory the night before over South Carolina, Derek Nesbitt and Aaron Bendickson were the offensive stars of the game, with Nesbitt scoring two goals and Bendickson adding two assists. Chris Carrozzi was once again in goal and got his second victory of the season, nabbing 32 of 34 shots against him.

Gwinnett’s 3-0-1 record gives them a total of seven points, placing them in first place of the South Division, and in second place of the ECHL’s renamed Eastern Conference.

DAN CHARLESTON BACK IN TRENTON The Albany Devils loaned Dan Charleston to Trenton Sunday. The Oak Forest, IL. native played 25 games for Trenton last season and had 33 points, scoring six goals and 27 assists with a plus-2 rating, including a four-point, two goal and two assist performance on Feb. 14 at Elmira. He did not appear in any contests for Albany this season.

Before joining the Devils organization, Charleston laced up the skates for the University of Nebraska-Omaha (CCHA), where in four seasons with the Mavericks, the 5’8, 180 lb. forward totaled 43 goals and 73 assists for 116 points in 159 games played, and was the team’s third leading scorer in 2007-08 when he accrued a career-high 37 points.

CHRIS POLI RETURNS WITH GLADIATORS Thursday night’s contest between the Devils and Gladiators will feature the return of former Devil, Chris Poli, to Trenton. First joining the Devils during the 2007-08 season immediately following his senior year at Brown University, the Medfield, MA native accumulated 49 pts (22g, 27a) and 54 penalty minutes over three seasons in Trenton. After a 55-game career in Trenton, the 6-1, 210 lb. forward was traded by the Devils to the Gladiators on September 2, 2010.
