Maternal and Child Health (NCH) care is one of the
important community activities of the Rotarians and
Rotary Clubs and it has been identified as one of the
Six Areas of Focus of the Rotary Foundation.
According to WHO (2001) definition ‘Health is a
complete physical, mental and social well-being state
and not only absence of disease or ailment. These
medullar ideas conforms the totality in health,
although there are differences in ages, countries,
cultures, classes and gender that prevent a homo-
genous consensus, especially in MCH care.
MCH care is a concept that encompasses family
planning, preconception, prenatal and postnatal care.
In this goal of preconception care, Rotarians and
Clubs can engage in providing education, health
promotion, screening and interventions for women of
marriageable/reproductive age to reduce the risk
factors that might affect future pregnancies.
Similarly Child Healthcare (CH) includes physical,
mental and social-well being of the child too. A
healthy child is dependent on healthy mother. At
least 20% of the diseases in children below 5 years
of age is related to the poor maternal health and
nutrition which is dependent on the quality of care.
Over 7 million children below 5 years die every year.
Large number of maternal and child health problems
are due to inadequate or lack of MCH care. This
needs to be focused by the healthcare specialists.
Under 5 mortality & healthcare issues depend on –
• Nutritional & healthcare knowledge;
• Level of immunization & oral rehydration therapy;
• Availability of MCH services;
• Food & healthcare availability for mother & child;
• Availability of safe drinking water & sanitation;
• Safety of the environment.
Rotary Club of Dhaka should plan community activities
for MCH care based on the above issues to build a
healthy society in keeping with the Rotary theme ‘Be
a gift to the world.’
