When MAMMA MIA!, a new stage musical based onthe songs of ABBA, opened at the Prince EdwardTheatre in London on April 6, 1999, no one had any idea that the overnight hit would become anenduring worldwide phenomenon, the first block-buster of the new millennium.

The story of the making of the MAMMA MIA! movie begins beforethat auspicious West End opening.Global Producer Judy Craymer knew ABBA’s Benny Andersson andBjörn Ulvaeus from working with them as executive producer onthe London premiere of the musical ‘Chess’ in the early 1980s.The concept of MAMMA MIA! began with Judy’s idea of using ABBAsongs to tell a new story. Her inspiration really came from ‘TheWinner Takes It All’, an emotional roller coaster of a song aboutthe break up of a relationship. (‘Winner’ is sung on the film andsoundtrack by Meryl Streep).Once Benny and Björn had endorsed Judy’s concept for the show, playwright Catherine Johnson was chosen to write the book, andrenowned theatre director Phyllida Lloyd was invited to stage theproduction. One of the most successful groups of all time, ABBA dominated thepop music charts between 1974 and 1982. The remarkable recordsales and the volume of hits – a dozen Top Twenty singles in the USand nine Number Ones in the UK alone – made the Swedish groupinternational stars.Since the London opening, MAMMA MIA! has been seen on stagearound the world by over 30 million people in twenty productionsin eight different languages, selling more than two billion dollarsworth of tickets at the box office. With these extraordinary statistics, it was inevitable that MAMMAMIA! would become a motion picture. What was unusual was that the three women who led the creativeteam for the stage musical, Judy Craymer (producer), PhyllidaLloyd (director) and Catherine Johnson (writer) would repeat theirroles in the making of the MAMMA MIA! film.Inspired by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs,MAMMA MIA’s romantic tale unfolds on a sun-soaked Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the iden-tity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back tothe island they last visited 20 years ago.

With Meryl Streep signed on to play Donna Sheridan, the inde-pendent, strong-willed mother, other cast followed, with JulieWalters and Christine Baranski playing Donna’s best friends,Rosie and Tanya, respectively. A trio of Hollywood’s hottest men,Pierce Brosnan (Sam Carmichael), Colin Firth (Harry Bright) andStellan Skarsgård (Bill Austin) joined to play the dads. AmandaSeyfried (Big Love) and Dominic Cooper (The History Boys) werecast as the young romantic couple, Sophie and Sky.

From the outset Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus decided thatthe classic ABBA sound should be featured on the MAMMA MIA!soundtrack and it was also important that the recording standalone as a pop music album.

Benny and Björn reunited in Stockholm with the musicians whoplayed on the original ABBA songs to record the soundtrack inFebruary, 2007. This was the first time these musicians hadplayed these songs together since ABBA toured more than 25years ago.The fifteen month journey from those first recording sessions tothe completion of the sound-editing in New York could have beena daunting experience, but for Benny every moment was a revela-tion. Along with producing the recording, Benny played keyboards.Playing together again in the studio, the music came rushingback. Says Benny, ‘We didn’t have to think about it. It was in thefingers.’Setting out to record one or two backing tracks a day, they man-aged to record all the music beds in less than a week.

The actors joined together for the first time to record their vocalsin London in April, 2007, prior to the commencement of filming, which began at Pinewood Studios June, 2007, and continued laterthat summer on location on the beautiful Greek island paradisesof Skiathos and Skopelos, as well as Damouchari on the PelionPeninsula.Although none of the actors had much experience in the recordingstudio, they were undaunted and completely at ease singing theclassic ABBA songs. The sessions were a joyous process whichyou can hear on this recording, that not only brings back that fan-tastic experience of watching the film, but also perfectly capturesthe heartwarming, feel-good spirit that is MAMMA MIA!

My life will never be the sameMoney, money, money...

Our Last SummerBenny Andersson &Björn Ulvaeus

I can still recall Our last summerI still see it allWalks along the SeineLaughing in the rainOur last summerMemories that remainWe made our wayalong the riverAnd we sat down in the grassBy the Eiffel TowerI was so happy we had metIt was the age of no regretOh yesThose crazy years, that was the timeOf the flower-powerBut underneath We had a fear of flyingOf growing oldA fear of slowly dyingWe took a chanceLike we were dancingour last danceI can still recall

our last summer

I still see it allIn the tourist jam‘round the Notre DameOur last summerWalking hand in handParis restaurantsOur last summerMorning croissantsLiving for the dayWorries far awayOur last summerWe could laugh and playAnd now you’re working in a bankA family man A football fanAnd your name is HarryHow dull it seems Are you the hero of my dreams?I can still recall our last summer...

Lay All Your LoveOn MeBenny Andersson &Björn Ulvaeus

Don’t go wastingyour emotionLay all your love on meI wasn’t jealousbefore we metNow every man thatI see is a potential threatAnd I’m possessive, it isn’t niceYou’ve heard me saying that smok-ing was my only viceBut now it isn’t trueNow everything is newAnd all I’ve learned Has overturnedI beg of youDon’t go wastingyour emotion

Lay all your love on me

It was like shootinga sitting duckA little small-talk, a smile and babyI was stuckI still don’t know what you’ve donewith meA grown-up woman should never fall so easilyI feel a kind of fearWhen I don’t have you nearUnsatisfiedI skip my prideI beg you dearDon’t go wastingyour emotionLay all your love on meDon’t go sharing your devotionLay all your love on meI’ve had a few little love affairsThey didn’t last very long and they’vebeen pretty scarceI used to think that was sensibleIt makes the truth even more incomprehensible‘cause everything is newAnd everything is youAnd all I’ve learned Has overturnedWhat can I do?Don’t go wasting your emotion...

Half past twelveAnd I’m watching the late show inmy flat all aloneHow I hate to spend the evening onmy ownAutumn windsBlowin’ outside my window as I lookaround the roomAnd it makes me so depressed to seethe gloomIs there a man out there?Someone to hear my prayerGimme! Gimme! Gimme! A man after midnightWon’t somebody help me Chase the shadows awayGimme! Gimme! Gimme! A man after midnightTake me through the darknessTo the break of the dayMovie starsFind the end of the rainbow with a fortune to win

It’s so different from the world I’mlivin’ inTired of TVI open the window and I gaze into the nightBut there’s nothing there to see, no one in sightIs there a man out there?Someone to hear my prayerGimme! Gimme!...

The Name Of The GameBenny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus &Stig Anderson

I’ve seen you twiceIn a short timeOnly a day since we startedIt seems to me For every timeI’m getting more open-heartedYour smile and the sound of your voiceAnd the way you see through meGot a feeling, you give me no choiceAnd it means a lot to meSo I wanna knowWhat’s the name of the game?Does it mean anything to you? What’s the name of the game? Can you feel it the way I do? Tell me please, ‘cause I have to knowI’m a curious child, beginning togrowAnd you make me talk And you make me feelAnd you make me showWhat I’m trying to concealIf I trust in youWould you let me down? Would you laugh at meIf I said I care for you?

Could you feel the same way too? I wanna knowThe name of the gameI have no friendsNo one to seeAnd I am never invitedNow I am here Talking to youNo wonder I get excitedYour smile, and the sound of yourvoiceAnd the way you see through meGot a feeling, you give me no choiceAnd it means a lot to meSo I wanna knowWhat’s the name of the game? …

SOSBenny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus &Stig Anderson

Where are those happy days They seem so hard to findI try to reach for you, but you have closed your mindWhatever happened to our love? I wish I understoodIt used to be so nice,it used to be so goodSo when you’re near me, darling can’t you hear meSOSThe love you gave me, nothing else can save meSOSWhen you’re goneHow can I even try to go on? When you’re goneThough I try how can I carry on? You seem so far away Though you are standing nearYou made me feel aliveBut something died I fearI really tried to make it outI wish I understoodWhat happened to our love, It used to be so goodSo when you’re near me,darling can’t you hear meSOSThe love you gave me, nothing else can save meSOSWhen you’re goneHow can I even try to go on? When you’re goneThough I try how can I carry on?So when you’re near me, darling can’t you hear meSOSAnd the love you gave me, nothing else can save meSOSWhen you’re gone...

Slipping Through My FingersBenny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus

Schoolbag in handShe leaves homein the early morningWaving goodbye with an absent-minded smileI watch her go with a surgeof that well-known sadnessAnd I have to sit downfor a whileThe feeling that I’m losing her foreverAnd without really entering her worldI’m glad wheneverI can share her laughterThat funny little girl

Slipping through my fingersall the time

Slipping through my fingers all the timeDo I really see what’s in her mindEach time I think I'm close to knowingShe keeps on growingSlipping through my fingers all the timeSleep in our eyesHer and me at thebreakfast tableBarely awake, I let precious time go byThen when she’s goneThere’s that oddmelancholy feelingAnd a sense of guiltI can’t denyWhat happened to those wonderful adventuresThe places I had planned for us to go Well, some of that we did but mostwe didn’tAnd why I just don’t knowSlipping through my fingersall the time...Sometimes I wish thatI could freeze the pictureAnd save it from thefunny tricks of timeSlipping through myfingersSchoolbag in handShe leaves homein the early morningWaving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

The Winner Takes It All

Benny Andersson &Björn Ulvaeus

I don’t want to talkAbout things we’vegone throughThough it’s hurting meNow it's historyI’ve played all my cardsAnd that’s what you’ve done tooNothing more to sayNo more ace to playThe winner takes it allThe loser standing smallBeside the victoryThat’s her destinyI was in your armsThinking I belonged thereI figured it made senseBuilding me a fenceBuilding me a homeThinking I’d be strong thereBut I was a foolPlaying by the rulesThe gods may throw the diceTheir minds as cold as iceAnd someone way down hereLoses someone dearThe winner takes it allThe loser has to fallt's simple and it’s plainWhy should I complainTell me does she kissLike I used to kiss you?Does it feel the sameWhen she calls your name?Somewhere deep insideYou must know I miss youBut what can I sayRules must be obeyedThe judges will decideThe likes of me abideSpectators of the showAlways staying low

The game is on againA lover or a friendA big thing or a smallThe winner takes it allI don’t wanna talk‘cause it makes me feel sadAnd I understandYou’ve come to shake my handI apologizeIf it makes you feel badSeeing me so tenseNo self-confidence – but you seeThe winner takes it allThe winner takes it allThe game is on againA lover or a friendA big thing or a smallThe winner takes it allThe winner...

When All Is Said And DoneBenny Andersson &Björn Ulvaeus

Here’s to us one more toast and then we’ll pay the billDeep inside both of us could feel the autumn chillBirds of passage, you and meWe fly instinctivelyWhen the summer’s over and thedark clouds hide the sunNeither you nor I’m to blamewhen all is said and doneIt’s been there in my dreams, thisscene I see unfoldTrue at last, flesh and blood, o cherish and to holdCareless fools will suffer, yesI know and I confessOnce I lost my way when somethinggood had just begunLesson learned, it’s history when allis said and done

In our lives we have walked, some strange and lonely treksSlightly worn but dignified and not too old for sexClear-headed and open-eyedWith nothing left untriedStanding calmly at the crossroads, no desire to runThere’s no hurry any morewhen all is said and doneStanding calmly at the crossroads…
