Twyla Tharp’s specTacular Frank sinaTra Musical

“coMe Fly away”

on September 13, 2011, the Fisher Theatre’s Fiftieth Anniversary season opens with Come Fly Away, a new musical conceived,

choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp. Ms. Tharp last came to the Fisher in

January 2004 to launch the national tour of Movin’ Out. Based on the music of Billy Joel, Movin’ Out was then on its way to becoming a cultural phenomenon. It criss-crossed the country in several tours and won Ms. Tharp multiple awards including a 2003 Tony and the 2006 UK Critics’ Circle National Dance award for the London production..

Since then, Ms. Tharp has made her way around the world creating, teaching, and tak-ing time to add a third book to her resume, The Collaborative Habit: Life Lessons for Working Together.

Twyla Tharp began piano lessons with her mother at just eighteen months of age. In her family’s Rialto, California home, she

had her own practice studio complete with a dance floor, ballet bars, and an assortment of costumes and dance wear any dancing girl would envy. Through grammar school into high school she studied a bevy of creative avocations from violin to baton, in addition to ballet, all while working summers at her family’s drive-in theatre.

From Rialto, Tharp moved onto Pomona College in Los Angeles, eventually transfer-ring to Barnard College in New York. There she studied ballet with Igor Schwezoff at the American Ballet Theater and eventually studied under Martha Graham, Merce Cun-nigham, and Eugene “Luigi” Lewis.

Graduating from Barnard with a degree in art history, the young dancer began her pro-fessional career with the Paul Taylor dance company and at the age of twenty-three cre-ated her own dance company, Twyla Tharp Dance. It didn’t take long until her contem-

porary style became recognizable, adding irreverent squiggles, shrugged shoulders, hops, and jumps into conventional dance techniques. She found ways to combine bal-let with natural movements like running, walking, and skipping to breathe new life into modern dance.

Her 1971 piece The Fugue served to cat-apult her to fame. Tharp and her company began working with renowned dance compa-

nies like American Ballet Theatre and Jof-frey Ballet. She created new works, bringing ballet and contemporary music together with her Joffrey collaboration Deuce Coupe set to the music of the Beach Boys. The result was a tremendous success.

Twyla Tharp’s creative relationship with the music of Frank Sinatra began in 1976 with the premiere of Once More Frank, a duet created for the American Ballet The-atre, performed by Ms. Tharp and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The collaboration continued with Nine Sinatra Songs, Ms. Tharp’s ac-claimed piece for fourteen dancers, which had its world premiere with Twyla Tharp Dance in 1982. It was followed by Sinatra Suite, a duet featuring Mr. Baryshnikov and Elaine Kudo.

Frank Sinatra requested that Sinatra Suite be performed when he received his Kennedy Center Honors Award, citing it as one of the purest expressions of his body of work. The production had its official world premiere at the Kennedy Center in 1984 with American Ballet Theatre.

Come Fly Away brings her years of expe-rience and love for Sinatra to the Broadway stage in a thrilling contemporary production.

Featuring Sinatra’s vocals backed by a live on-stage big band and fifteen of the world’s best dancers, Tharp weaves together the story of four couples falling in and out of love through choreography that Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune described as “seemly impossible athleticism with just the right mix of devoted precision and fer-vent opposition.” The Broadway production garnered Tharp another Tony nomination.

Prior to launching the national tour, Tharp took more time to perfect the Come Fly Away concept by collaborating with producers at Las Vegas’ Wynn Hotel on a Vegas-styled version of the show called Sinatra Dance With Me. The collaboration enabled Tharp to fine-tune the show, giv-ing it a new sparkle and Sinatra shine for its tour debut this summer.

With its amazing cast, big band, more than twenty-five Sinatra songs and Tharp’s breathtaking choreography, there couldn’t be a more auspicioius opening for the Fish-er Theatre’s Fiftieth Anniversary season than Come Fly Away.

The 2011-12 Broadway in Detroit season features Come Fly AwAy at the Fisher Theatre September 13–25. Subscription tickets are available now at BroadwayInDetroit.com and by calling (313) 872-1000. The 1983 movie A Christmas Story proved to be a breakout event for child actor Peter Billingsley. Appear-

ing in the movie as the adorable nine-year old Ralphie Parker, Billingsley found fame

with his character’s quest for an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle.

A Chistmas Story, The Musical! began life in the mind of author, radio host, raconteur, and comic genius Jean Shepherd. Based on his

childhood in 1930’s Indiana, Shepherd spun a series of tales that he either published as short stories, read for his radio audience, or presented live on the college circuit. Among these were “Duel in the Snow, or Red Ry-der Nails the Cleveland Street Kid,” “Flick’s Tongue,” and “My old Man And The Las-civious Special Award That Heralded The Birth of Pop Art.”

These stories and others were woven by Shepherd, screenwriter Leigh Brown, and director Bob Clark into a screenplay for the 1983 MGM film. In its theatrical release, the film’s box office performance was only

mediocre, but after Ted Turner purchased the MGM film library in 1986, and Time-Warner subse-quently acquired Turner Enter-tainment Company, the film found a new life on cable television.

Beginning in the late 1980’s and continuing through the 90’s until to-day, A Christmas Story has steadily grown in popularity and now occu-pies the number one spot on several prominent lists of all-time favorite Christmas movies. For over a decade, TNT has broadcast a 24-hour marathon of the film each holiday season that sets ratings records. With the movie’s ever-growing audience, a play version of the story was released and produced in regional theatres around the country in 2000. Then work began in 2006 on the musical when veteran playwright Joseph Robinette with director Eric Rosen started creating a script which would eventu-ally become a workshopped musical produc-tion in Kansas City for Christmas 2009.

During those years, Billingsley continued to act, eventually moving on to produce and direct. In the early nineties, he and comedy icon Vince Vaughn starred in an after school special advising kids about the dangers of using steroids (it was actually Billingsley who appeared as the kid on steroids in the film!). The two hit it off leading to the cre-

ation of their own production com-pany and several producing credits for Billingsley including Iron Man, Four Christ-mases, and The Break-up, with a directing credit for Couples Retreat.

After the suc-cess of A Christ-mas Story’s Kansas City production, Billingsley found himself drawn back to his child-star roots when with the opportu-nity to join the executive produc-tion team and bring the show to Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. There it went from workshop pro-duction to full-scale musical ex-ceeding projections, impressing Broadway producers across the country and becoming the sec-ond highest single-ticket selling show in the 5th Avenue’s history.

The goal for the show, and for Billings-ley is to see A Christmas Story, The Musi-cal! tour the country and find a home on Broadway. “The film brings a lot of joy to a lot of people,” he told People magazine,

“I always get asked ‘aren’t you over it?’ but I’m not.” In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter he said “A

Christmas Story has al-ways meant a lot to me personally and to audiences worldwide. I’m excited to bring this film to the stage because the story and the characters lend themselves so well to the excit-

ing ingredients that become available in the world of musicals. Just think about the idea of a Leg Lamp Kickline!”

Set in the fictional town of Hulman, In-diana, A Christmas Story, The Musical! follows Ralphie and his quest to ensure that his Red Ryder Air Rifle ends up under his

family’s Christmas tree. Along the way he and his family overcome hilarious obstacles, win a “major award” and deal with a host of outrageous holiday experiences. With songs both funny and sentimental by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and a faithful yet inventive book by Joseph Robinette, A Christmas Story, The Musical! paints a refreshing holiday portrait of a simpler time in America. By capturing every child’s holiday wonder with delicious-ly wicked wit, a nostalgic eye, and a heart of gold, it’s a Christmas present that Detroiters of all ages will be sure to cherish for gen-erations to come—and send producer Peter Billingsley sledding to success.

The 2011-12 Broadway in Detroit season features A ChristmAs story, the musiCAl! at the Fisher Theatre November 15–27. extra! John o’hurley is Billy Flynn in

Another star shines at the Fisher Theatre

DETRoIT — John o’Hurley, the popular “Seinfeld” cast member and renaissance man, will perform as the slick attorney Billy Flynn in the hit Broadway musical Chicago, at the Fisher Theatre May 17-22.

o’Hurley is best known for portraying Elaine’s pompous boss, J. Peterman, in the iconic NBC comedy “Seinfeld.” In 2002, TV Guide named “Seinfeld” the greatest televi-sion program of all time, and in reruns, it is the world’s most-watched syndicated series.

John o’Hurley’s swashbuckling career has included winning a controversial people’s choice victory on the first season of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” He hosted the popular game show “Family Feud,” has had leading roles in several Broadway shows—including Billy Flynn in Chicago—and was featured as King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot in Las Vegas.

People magazine named o’Hurley one of the Sexiest Men Alive in 2006. He is also well known as a celebrity golfer and has written two best-selling books.

Chicago was ahead of its time when it was launched on Broadway in 1975, with a book

by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, and choreography by Ann Reink-ing. It first played the Fisher Theatre while on tour in the Fall of 1977.

When Chicago returned to the Broadway stage in 1996, world theatrical audiences fell madly in love with it as a great American musical. The show dominated the Tony Award cer-emonies in 1997, winning six Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. That same year, it won the Grammy Award for Best Mu-sical Cast Recording.

Since then, Chicago has become a Broad-way and touring mainstay and a showcase for some of the world’s top theatrical talent.

Chicago was adapted for film in 2002, and produced six oscars including the Acad-emy Award for Actress in a Leading Role for Catherine Zeta-Jones.

In March 2011, the Chicago stage produc-tion became the longest-running musical revival to play on Broadway, and the fifth longest-running show in Broadway history.

Chicago with John o’Hurley as Billy Flynn—it is hard to imagine a better way to heat up the Fisher Theatre stage in prepara-tion for its upcoming Fiftieth Anniversary season.

ChiCAgo returns to the Fisher Theatre for one week only May 17–22. Tickets are on sale now at the Fisher Theatre box office, at Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at (800) 982-2787. Groups of twelve or more email [email protected] (subject line Chicago) or call (313) 871-1132.

John O’Hurley is just one the stars who have been featured in Chicago on Broadway and around the world. Others include: ★ Bebe Neuwirth ★ Ann Reinking ★ James Naughton ★ Joel Grey ★ Jasmine Guy ★ Sharon Lawrence ★ Marilu Henner ★ Sandy Duncan ★ Michael C.
