Therefore, not only does Cape May Stage promise to offer theater-goers a phe- nomenal line-up of com- edies, farces and dramas, not to mention exceptional exclusives for subscribers, but look for dazzling sur- prises in this very special upcoming season. Oft-recognized as one of New Jersey’s “favorite” the- atres, Artistic Director, Roy Steinberg, is ensuring that Cape May Stage remains such and is pulling out all the stops for the 25th season of this beloved the- ater that includes a world premiere, a Tony Award- winning play, a hilarious farce, a loosely-based biopic on two international schol- ars, and an annual holiday production. Cape May Stage has been consistently earning glow- ing reviews and accolades, and with a few tricks up his sleeve, Steinberg is certain that 2013 will be its best season yet. “Our patrons will not be disappointed with our main stage plays filled with laugh- ter and a few tears, along with our usual fascinating performances and discus- sions of our well-received Second Stage Series,” says Steinberg. “But they will be blown away with the yet-to-be-announced sur- prises and celebrity appear- ances in store for our silver anniversary.” Cape May Stage’s 2013 theatre schedule features the following seven main stage productions: “How to Make a Rope Swing” by Shawn Fisher: A World Premiere Production May 17 – June 7, 2013 Wednesdays – Saturdays, 8 p.m. Sundays, 3 p.m. The South Jersey town of Oakbranch is replacing the old schoolhouse. Two local elders have been selected to decide on a person after whom the new building should be named. As they come together, they redis- cover the circumstances of their first meeting- a time when the school was first integrated and the region earned its nickname, “The Mississippi of the North.” Within the brick walls of the century-old building, a long-suppressed moment in the town’s history surfaces and threatens to change the memory of the town and these people forever. Cape May Stage Announces 2013 Season, 25th Anniversary CAPE MAY – "I will go and tend my geese! I will, I will, I will!" screamed the Mayor's daughter wear- ing a goose-girl costume. Usually, she was a polite, pampered child, but ever since her father threw a Christmas Eve party for all of the children in the city, she behaved like the costume she was wearing. In fact, all of the children were behaving like the costumes dictated. Pau- pers were princes and the privileged performed farm chores. This was the doings of a strange little Costumer who suddenly appeared several weeks before the party in "The Christmas Masquerade," by Mary Wilkins Freeman. No mat- ter how hard parents tried to undress their children, the costumes would not be removed. Will the Mayor's daughter be forever a shep- herdess and the cobbler's son a prince? This tale is one of two MAC, ELTC Present ‘Ghosts of Christmas Past’ Trolley Rides stories that are part of the repertoire of the "Ghosts of Christmas Past" Trolley Rides, co-sponsored by The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) and the award- winning Equity profes- sional East Lynne The- ater Company. The other story is based on Frank R. Stockton's "Old Applejoy's Ghost," where a lonely man once more realizes the true meaning of Christ- mas, through the work of his niece who meets an unusual apparition. Both have been adapted for storytelling by Gayle Stahlhuth. Listen to these classic American ghostly tales, told in a dark trolley, while the twinkling lights of the beautifully decorated homes and streets are seen through the windows of the heated vehicle. Most of the "spirited" thirty-minute rides begin and end at the Washington Street Mall Information popular storytelling event on the porches of B&Bs dur- ing the summer and fall. Reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by calling MAC at 884- 5404. If tickets are avail- able the day of the tour, they will be sold at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Meanwhile, on the main- stage of ELTC is "Louisa May Alcott's Christmas" adapted and performed by Gayle Stahlhuth, with only five shows left: Fri., Dec. 7, Sat., Dec. 8, Sun., Dec. 9, and Fri., Dec. 14 at 8:00 p.m., with a special 2:00 matinee on Sat., Dec. 8. Save $3 on price of a ticket on Dec. 7 by bring- ing an item for the Food Closet, and $5 of every ticket sold on Dec. 14 will go to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Performance location is The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes St., Cape May, where the com- pany is in residence. “Lend Me A Tenor”

by Ken Ludwig:June 12 – July 26, 2013

Tuesdays -- Sundays, 8 p.m.

Winner of 3 Tony and

4 Drama Desk Awards, this side-splitting com-edy will have you singing its praises! When a fi ery-tempered, world-famous Italian opera star comes to town, he fi nds himself in a compromising situation giving an unexpected star the chance of a lifetime. Confusion and chaos ensue as the audience is in on the ultimate game of “who’s who.” Passion, double entendres, mistaken iden-tities and absolute hilarity send this award-winning farce to comedic heights!

“Boeing Boeing” by Marc

Camoletti:Translated by Beverly

Cross and Francis EvansJuly 31 - Sept. 13, 2013Tuesdays - Sundays, 8

p.m. Bernard is engaged to

Gloria. And to Gabriella. And to Gretchen. His ex-tra-curricular lifestyle hits turbulence when all three invade his swanky bachelor pad in this high-fl ying farce from the swinging sixties. This 2008 Tony Award®-winner for Best Revival of a Play, is an uproarious jet-propelled comedy that had audiences and critics cheering in London and on Broadway. Grab your boarding pass for a rol-licking good time because "Boeing Boeing" is coming in for a landing this sum-mer at Cape May Stage!

“Freud’s Last Session” by

Mark St. Germain:Sept. 18 - Oct. 19,

2013 Wednesdays - Sundays,

8 p.m. Psychoanalyst Sigmund

Freud pioneered the Id, the Ego and the Superego. Writer C.S. Lewis created The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Two men, both brilliant, yet vastly different: Freud the atheist, Lewis the believer. In this new play, which has been drawing record-breaking crowds in New York, they meet in 1939 as England goes to war against the Nazis. Their evening of electrifying conversation about God, love, sex and the meaning of life will spark controversy long after the show is over.

“A Walk in the Woods”

by Lee Blessing:Oct. 23 - Nov. 16, 2013 Thursdays - Saturdays,

8 p.m.Saturdays & Sundays,

3 p.m. Lee Blessing's Pulitzer

Prize-nominated drama, fi lled with unexpected hu-mor and extraordinary humanity, is an absorbing, revealing and brilliant de-bate on the eternal hope and relentless futility of high-stakes politics. Two superpower arms nego-tiators -- one a witty but cynical Russian veteran and the other an idealis-tic American newcomer -- meet informally in the woods after long frustrat-

ing hours at the bargaining table. "A work of passion and power with the ring of political truth." —Time

“Jacob Marley’s Christ-

mas” by Tom Mula:Nov. 29 - Dec. 29,

2013 Thursdays - Saturdays,

8 p.m. Saturdays & Sundays,

3 p.m. We all know the story

of Ebenezer Scrooge...but whatever happened to his former business partner Jacob Marley? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned for all eternity, but when a malicious little evil sprite offers a desper-ate Marley a chance for freedom, he accepts. But to escape his own chains, he must fi rst redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, re-demption and renewal. This irreverent, funny, and, ultimately, deeply mov-ing story retells Dickens' classic with warmth and infectious zest. This rous-ing performance is sure to become a holiday classic for generations to come!

CAPE MAY – The Tudors are coming to Cape May. In costume. All those who have a passion for the Re-naissance and Renaissance festivals, put Thur., Dec. 13 on your calendar, and plan to enjoy an interesting dis-cussion of Henry VIII, the most musical monarch of the Renaissance, who sang, read music, composed mu-sic, and played lute, virgin-als and organ.

Henry VIII hired more court musicians than any other Renaissance mon-arch, and his courtiers, and queens, all had to play the lute, sing, dance and entertain, or he was not happy with them. Henry’s court was known for its revels, music, and its Royal Chapell. Dr. Bert Green-span, who taught at Rowan for fi ve decades, will give us an entertaining talk on the greatest period of Eng-lish music. He will perform something that everyone knows, and ask them to identify it. And he will be reviewing how the Renais-sance was different musi-cally than other periods. He will describe Henry VIII as brilliant, handsome, an author, a musician…who also turned out to be a se-rial killer.

Dr. Greenspan, who taught over 2000 students at Rowan, and spent 30 years as a concert master at the Reading Pa. Symphony Orchestra, performed for the Pennsylvania Ballet Company, is currently en-joying retirement in Florida where he is performing with a Baroque Orchestra in Fort Myers and is a violinist with the Naples Opera Company.

The event will transpire, with questions from the audience, and a little wine break, to be followed by the reading of a new play by Sheila Lynch Rinear, play-wright from San Antonio, Tx. who has written over 50 plays.

Her play, Bound by Truth, will be read by four Equity actors who perform for East Lynne on occasion, as well as other venues. The read-ing will be directed by Mark E. Lang. It will look extensively on the rela-tionship between Thomas More, former Chancellor of England, consigned to the Tower of London, for refusing to sign Henry’s oath making him the head of the church in England, where, if he did not renege, he would be decapitated and perhaps, disembow-eled in a public display re-served for traitors. He had monks, Bishop John Fisher, confessor generals of the Brigittines, and the head of the Carthusians marched to their deaths before his window in prison. In all of this, he had the support of his daughter, his eldest, Margaret Roper. His wife, sons in laws, and friends abandoned him.

His daughter, Margaret More Roper, his bright-est and favorite daughter, whom he had educated as well as anyone who attend-ed Oxford in his home at Chelsea enjoyed the study of Greek, Latin, English, science, math, astronomy, music and even medicine. At Chelsea, along with his other two daughters, his step-daughter, and his son, and various relations and

neighbors, they studied with don from Oxford and Cambridge and scholars from the continent.

Margaret More will also play a prominent part in the new play. In the 16th century, education was foreign to women. Only queens and princesses received an education, and king’s educations may have been heavier into jousting than Greek and Latin. Margaret translated Erasmus from the Greek to English. She was a brilliant writer and translator, but, because of her sex, she was not allowed to write. Her father wanted her virtuous, humble, and not seeking after vain glory.

More was a famed Eng-

lish humanist who had written “Utopia.” He was a best friend with Erasmus,

the most famous humanist in Europe, who wrote “In

Praise of Folly,” which he dedicated to More. More, like a group of young hu-manists at Oxford, was infatuated with the idea of the new learning: return-ing to Greek and Latin, translating from Greek to Latin to English. He stud-ied the Greek moralists, poets, scientists. Erasmus translated the bible from the original Greek. Both were church reformers, who, in their youth, de-sired to reform the church from within. Henry VIII wrote a diatribe against Luther and was named “Defender of the Faith” by the Pope.

The world of the middle-ages was rapidly coming to an end, and the age of the Renaissance was rising. We departed from the thought of Augustine which had held the Middle Ages to-gether: “The common good is to be preferred to our own selfi sh interests, and not our own selfi sh inter-ests to the common good.” Humanity was now in hot pursuit of individualism. The community was about to be severed, and the Catholic faith, which had held for l000 years, was to be splintered. More lived in those times. He was one of the last medieval minds in England, who harkened back to the church of l000 years, the church that be-gan hospitals, universities, and kept the bible through the ages, writing it be hand in monasteries.

Join Access to Art, Inc. as we get a little insight into this era which began the modern age which now seems sated with individualism, individual rights, and the cult of the self. The business of the common good often seems to be of less interest than the rights of individuals to take their interests way above the common good. Witness the recent be-havior of the banks and the mortgage companies in crashing the economy and destroying one third of American wealth while rewarding the perpetrators with bonuses.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, and students. Call Access to Art, Inc. at (609) 465-3963 to reserve tickets. Send checks to Access to Art, Inc., 4l7 E. Pacifi c Ave., Cape May Court House, N.J. 08210. See us online at www.accesstoart.org.

OCEAN CITY - Two changes have been neces-sitated in the series of free Bay-Atlantic Symphony music lectures by Paul M. Somers in Ocean City for December and February.

The December lecture, “Music During and Be-tween the 20th Century Wars,” has been resched-uled to Jan. 15, at the same time and location. This lecture will survey how the music scene evolved from Irving Berlin to Beatles and beyond.

The January lecture, exploring The Golden Thread—an unbroken line of connections from me-dieval chant to Gershwin, will take place on Jan. 8, as scheduled.

Somers, Adult Educa-

tion Director for the Bay-Atlantic Symphony, is a also a composer, performer, founder of Maurice River Music, was for 25 years the harpsichordist for the Virtuoso Strings of New York, and was a reviewer for the Star-Ledger.

The Bay-Atlantic Sym-phony music lectures series are co-sponsored by the libraries in which they given.

For further information, call the Bay-Atlantic Sym-phony at (856) 451-1169, or Somers at Maurice River Music at (856) 506-0580. For the Ocean City music lecture series, you can also call the Ocean City Public Library at (609) 399-2434.
