INTRODUCTIONThere are so many opportunities that you could get involved in whilst you are at Universityso which should you choose and where can you go to find out what is on offer?

This directory is designed to provide you with further information on some of the manyinteresting opportunities available to you both on and off campus and to signpost you towhere you can find out more. All of these opportunities could potentially be included in yourlife skills portfolio for your Surrey Life-Wide Learning Award.

The directory is presented in four sections, LIFE SKILLS, WORK EXPERIENCE,VOLUNTEERING and OTHER OPPORTUNITIES.

Being at University you have a wealth of opportunities at your fingertips, achance to build on your existing skills or develop new ones. This may be inareas that you are interested in, that you feel may be beneficial in the future foryour career prospects or perhaps that you would just like to try!

A wide range of skills workshops, programmes, courses and other trainingactivities are available during your time at Surrey, many of those being offeredon campus through the Careers Service, USSU, SCEPTrE, Centre forWellbeing, Student Advice Centre, SPLASH,Surrey Sports Park and Language Translation Studies Centre (LTS) and youmay also wish to consider the wide range of further activities that exist offcampus.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Many students maintain a part time job alongside their studies orperhaps over vacation times. We all know that feeling when a little

extra cash would be a great help but what else can be gainedthrough work experience of any kind?

Valuable experience can be gathered in many roles, whether it isworking in a shop and improving communication skills andcustomer service or being entrepreneurial by running your ownbusiness!

EDUCATIONAL LIAISONThe Mentoring, Tutoring and Schools Without Walls schemes offer volunteers theopportunity to complete a placement of a minimum of 10 hours in a school in thelocal area. Training is provided for both schemes. What are the benefits to me?

- Increased communication skills- Enhance problem solving and organisational skills- May reinforce knowledge of subject area- Develops a sense of personal adequacy- Gives an insight into the teaching/learning process- Increases self confidence

Mentoring

Mentors provide one-to-one support and guidance every Wednesday afternoon tolocal secondary school pupils in a specific subject area, often your degree subjector subjects that you are confident in, with the aim of raising the individual pupilseducational aspiration and attainment.

Tutoring

Tutoring is an ideal project for anyone wishing to gain experience in a school/

educational environment. This scheme is flexible to work around you and yourtimetable. On this scheme you will be placed within a classroom or in after schoolclubs in the capacity of a classroom assistant, working with individuals and smallgroups in all subject areas, age groups and levels of ability. As a volunteer you arethere to provide additional support to the class teacher or activity supervisor.

Schools Without Walls

This scheme is similar to the Tutoring scheme but is for 6th form students only.All applications must come via your school's link teacher.To find out more about the scheme that you are interested in, please click on therelevant sub-page.Please note: All applicants are subject to an interview, a satisfactory Criminal Re-cords Bureau (CRB) check and must complete a training session before being ableto start in a placement.

SURREY SPORTS PARK

Surrey Sports Park offer a range of opportunities for students to volunteer insport, exercise and dance. These range from one off events to regular

school or community programmes. Sport Guildford Awards Every year, the borough council puts on an awardsevening, hosted by the University, to recognise the efforts and achievements ofsports people and teams in the Guildford Borough. The evening is also anopportunity to celebrate and recognise the work of Volunteers over the year, andawards are presented to those Volunteers that have made a significant effort andcontribution to helping Sport. It is also an excellent opportunity for you to meet with

other Volunteers and organisations from the area and see where else you can offeryour Volunteering services.

The value of a more complete education

The Surrey Lifewide Learning Award encourages you to make your
