INTRODUCTIONThere are so many opportunities that you could get involved in whilst you are at Universityso which should you choose and where can you go to find out what is on offer?
This directory is designed to provide you with further information on some of the manyinteresting opportunities available to you both on and off campus and to signpost you towhere you can find out more. All of these opportunities could potentially be included in yourlife skills portfolio for your Surrey Life-Wide Learning Award.
The directory is presented in four sections, LIFE SKILLS, WORK EXPERIENCE,VOLUNTEERING and OTHER OPPORTUNITIES.
The University of Surreys Student Experience Strategy sets out a vision foramore complete education. We are inspired by a vision of a higher educationexperience that recognises that students are engaged in learning across the
whole of their lives throughout their time at Surrey. It is this whole lifelearning that enables students to develop their unique identity, their subjectand professional knowledge and skills and the agency that will enable themto achieve their full potential and be successful throughout their lives.
Prof Christopher Snowden, Vice Chancellor University of Surrey,Enabling a More Complete Education Conference Programme
Graham Nicholson from Tony Gee & Partners LLP tells us how valuable he thinks an Awardfor recognising life-wide learning could be from a business perspective:
The business world needs people with academic skills but it also needs peoplewith initiative, confidence and a desire to learn further. A Surrey Life-Wide Awardwould demonstrate these qualities to employers. Graham Nicholson, Tony Gee& Partners LLP
Frances Boswell the winner of the Lifewide Learning Prize 2010 tells us what she thinks amore complete education means from a students perspective:
To me, a complete education is not just about studying and
gaining knowledge in your chosen field, but also broadeningyour horizons in terms of experience; as well as gaining vitaltransferable life skills. This can be achieved throughinvolvement in extracurricular activities whether volunteeringin your local community or being an active society orcommittee member on campus. Taking part in a range ofevents and activities is the perfect opportunity to meet new
and like-minded people and improve confidence at the same time as gaininginvaluable personal fulfilment; all elements essential for ensuring a well-roundededucational experience. Frances Boswell, undergraduate winner of the 2010
