festivities. Already confirmed are 25 teams and we will likely max out at 30 teams this year.

Many years ago, when Buck Lay became involved in the River Discovery Center, he didn’t realize he would leave such a big legacy. Recently, the River Discovery Center honored his dedication and involvement in the center by naming the classroom after him. His son and daughter, Keith Lay and Phyllis Boyd were present for the naming ceremony (see picture). Buck believed strongly in educating our youth about the river, and in particular, the river industry,
so it is fitting that the room now bears his name. Before his death, he established an endowment for the center as a lasting legacey.
Buck, along with his wife Helen, owned B & H Towing here in Paducah and became involved in the River Discovery Center back in the mid 1990’s, when it was called River Heritage Museum. Buck was a very active board member and helped shape the educational programs that the museum now offers.

Spring has finally sprung and it is
so welcome! The center is a flurry of
activity with both tourists and locals
visiting to experience the river. Being
a part of Paducah’s cultural scene is
important and we want everyone who
visits to leave here having had a great
experience.
2012 was a very exciting year
for several reasons. We launched
our newest program for high school
students considering a career in the
river industry, and we hosted our first
Paducah Dragon Boat Festival. The
festival was enthusiastically received
by the entire community and we are
looking forward to this year’s event on
September 21st. We have several new
things planned this year, so plan on
joining us for a fun-filled day.
Please remember our shop when
you are looking for a unique gift, book
or educational toy. We have lots of
new things in stock that you won’t find
anywhere else in Paducah. And, don’t
forget, we are open 7 days a week
through November.

1) Tell us about yourself and your family.Married to Pam 23 years, Madison (19) is at U of Louisville, Savanna (17 is a Senior at Tilghman, Sam (10) is a 5th grader at St. Mary’s.
2) How did you become involved in the River Discovery Center?Became interested in the educa-tional work that is done by the RHM on just how important of a role of the rivers play in our culture as a region and as an economic driver. It is incredibly important to “tell our story” of success to kids coming up in school and to encourage them to think about a career in the river industry.
3) Where are your favorite vacation spots? We spend a lot of time on the lake at Lake of the Ozarks in central Mis-souri and the remainder somewhere along the Florida Gulf coast.
4) What do you do in your free time?We have been blessed that our kids have been pretty active in sports and in the Market House Theater, so we share a lot of bleachers and theater seats. When that’s not going on, I like to fish and go to Cardinal Base-ball games.
5) What are your favorite things about Paducah?I love spending time at the river-front and showing people from out of town the floodwall murals and the downtown area. We have a real treasure with the RDC, Mar-ket House Theater and the Carson Center.
