    At one time, this giant natural gate only seemed

    open or the Danube itsel. Millions o years ago,the river cut a path here through high, sheer cliso the Carpathians, where a narrow, crooked reein shallow water made the river nearly impass-able until the 20th century. Eddies, whirlpools,

    and shallow waters caused countless shipwrecks.Today the stream is tamed by the huge dam atDjerdap, but this almost 100km stretch o the riv-er still ows through one o the most spectacularDanube landscapes. The river ows through two

    canyons and three gorges, in which the narrow-est point is only 150m wide, with 200m to 500mhigh clis towering above the rivers surace.

    Golubac and Djerdap National Park: Thesoaring towers o the Golubac Fortress on thenarrow Danube banks, with their arrow slits andwalls, orm a picturesque view atthe beginning o the Iron Gates. TheDanube is up to 7 km wide here dueto the dam, appearing to be a large

    lake. Conditions or sailing and sur-ing are ideal. The Danube ows or7km here to the Dam at Djerdap1 through the nature preserveof Djerdap. The mountain peaksoer a spectacular panorama withascinating clis intersected bycaves, mountain streams and wa-teralls. Outstanding cultural andhistorical sights simply demand tobe visited as well. The arteacts rom Lepenskivirnear the village o Donji Milanovac show one

    o the oldest European cultures. The archaeologi-cal excavations brought cult objects, ruins andeveryday objects rom a culture over8000 years old to light. Toweringabove the surace o the river is theSign of Trajan, rom the year 103AD evidencing that the Roman em-peror Trajan had successully built aroad through the daunting gorge.Between Donji Milanovac andKladovo, the Danube ows throughthe two narrowest gorges at MaliKazan (Small Kettle) and Veliki Ka-zan (Large Kettle). Kladovo: This small town at theend o the national park oers not only a tranquiltown centre, but also an interesting and diverse

    sightseeing programme. The City Museum, dis-plays many arteacts excavated in archaeologicaldigs in the area, as well as interesting inorma-

    tion about the region and the riverdam project. The Lock Museumoers a look at the giant machinesand the draining o the locks on the

    river. The 34m high and 1278m widedam was built as a cooperativeproject between Romania and Yu-goslavia in 1972 and even today thepower station supplies large areaso Serbia with electricity. In areasaround Kladovo, you can nd the ru-ins o a turkish and roman ortress,as well as the pillars o the ancientBridge of Trajan. The legendary

    bridge stretched over 1127m and was underpinnedby twenty pillars helping the Romans to nal vic-

    tory over the Dacians. Negotin and Surroundings: Near Kladovo theDanube curves to the right bypass-ing the mountains and orests oDeli Jovan, Vratna and Allja. An im-pressive natural wonder is a largestone gate ormed by clis, butappearing to be man-made. Deerand many bird species are at homehere in this wild landscape.
