On weekends, Ride Norfolk operates the South Coast Shuttle Ser-vice connecting Port Dover, Vittoria, Normandale, Turkey Point, Port Rowan and Long Point. Two buses make six or seven round trips per day. 2015 is the first year for the service which is operating from May 16 to September 27 on Saturdays, Sundays and Holiday

Mondays. One-way out of town fare is $6; In town fare is $2. Riders receive transfer for making multiple stops going one way. Multi-ride passes are available at public libraries for $25 ($30 value). Children aged 5 and under ride free. Information at www.ridenorfolk.ca

PORT DOVER MARINAPassmore Ave.Located east of the pier, Port Dover Harbour Marina is a

hive of activity from April to October. Offering over 450 seasonal dockage slips and transient slips, hydro and showers, boaters are able to enjoy beautiful Lake Erie.

CROSS OF 1669 EXPLORERSBrown St., Port DoverThe imposing granite cross on its lofty site overlooks the bascule bridge. Unveiled in 1922, its bronze plaques tell the story of two Jesuits, Dollier and Galinee with seven voyageurs, who set out from Quebec on a failed at-

tempt to find the Mississippi River. The first Europeans to visit this area claimed the land for King Louis XIV of France. The group wintered along the creek. A cairn and small park on DonJon Blvd marks their wintering site.

BRANT HILL INN30 John StreetThe Brant Hill Inn is a modern inn with large, comfortable rooms with individual heating and air conditioning, in-room coffee makers, hair dryers, irons, ironing boards, fridges and microwaves. Near shopping, beach and marina.

PORT DOVER LIFT BRIDGEThe lift bridge over the Lynn River is bridge number five in about 150 years. The two spans are raised by an opera-tor in the control building on the hour and half hour for pleasure boats and on de-mand for commercial boats.

THE WATERFRONTLake Erie’s Long Point Bay provides a beautiful backdrop for Port Dover.

Generation after generation has been drawn back to the sand and surf each year. Accommodations are located close enough that the waves can be heard rolling in on the beach. The beach area shops and restaurants are sure to please every visitor.

The Arbor is a Port Dover tradition. Foot-long Ritz Red Hots dressed with assorted relishes, fresh cut French fries, Golden Glow drinks and ice cream attract thou-sands of visitors for a quick and tasty meal.


PORT DOVER BEACH & WATERFRONTThere are many attractions at Port Dover’s harbourfront. Besides all the obvious activities

-- swimming, boating, fishing or sampling the varied menus from local restaurants -- enjoy “River Rider” boat cruises; personal water craft rentals; watch the fish tugs come

and leave the harbour; watch the sun rise or set; people watching can also be fun.


PORT DOVER MUSEUM44 Harbour St., Port DoverPart of the museum is an original fisherman’s net shanty. Galleries present exhibits on the days of com-mercial sail as well as Lake Erie shipwrecks including The Atlantic, ship building, rum running, and other aspects of lakeside life. The 1932 fish tug Almidart can be seen outside the museum.

HARBOURFRONTThe intersection of Walker and Main Streets marks Port Dover harbourfront. Although busy all year, it

attracts crowds of visitors during the summer months. Within the area is the popular sandy beach. It also is the centre for commercial fishing, maritime services and pleasure boaters.

PORT DOVER LIGHTHOUSE

On the West PierThe lighthouse on the west pier is a Recognized Fed-eral Heritage Building now owned by Norfolk County. The lighthouse is one of the oldest examples in On-tario of the square wooden lighthouse buildings from pre-Confederation.

ERIE BEACH HOTEL19 Walker St., Port Dover

The popularity of the landmark Erie Beach Hotel is about great food and hos-pitality. Three generations of the Schneider family has perfected the way to cook fresh Lake Erie perch. Visit The Cove Room or the casual Terrace Room upstairs.

HERO OF UPPER CANADAPowell Park, Main Street Major General Isaac Brock with 40 men of His Majesty’s 41st Regiment and 260 of the York, Lincoln, Oxford and Norfolk militia, set out from Port Dover on the 8th August, 1812, to relieve the invaded western frontier. His brilliant capture of Hull’s army at Detroit with a much smaller force saved this province to the Empire and made Brock “The Hero of Upper Canada.”

PORT DOVER CLOCK TOWER246 Main St., Port DoverBuilt in 1902, the clock tower is the most distinguish-ing feature of the Main Street building which houses Lighthouse Festival Theatre.

BURNING OF DOVER - WAR OF 1812Main at Prospect StreetOn May 14, 1814, about 800 American regulars and militia disembarked at the mouth of the Lynn River. The following day, meeting no opposition, they burnt the settlements of Dover and ravaged the surrounding countryside. Private dwell-ings were destroyed and livestock slaughtered. Local folklore says one house was spared that fed the soldiers.

ST. JOHN’S ROAD /RED KELLY LINEFrom Frisky Beaver, travel along St. John’s Road. A portion of this road is called Red Kelly Line honouring the NHL hockey legend who grew up here. At St. John’s Road and Highway 24 is the histor-ic St. John’s Anglican Church with a historic plaque to Wil-liam Mercer Wilson. During the Rebellions of 1837-38, he served in the Norfolk Cavalry and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

LYNN VALLEY TRAILPort Dover to SimcoeThe Lynn Valley Trail is located on the former CNR rail line established along the pioneer river trail in 1873 as the Lake Huron and Port Dover Railway. The rail line was abandoned in 1988. A convenient entry point to the trail is at Blueline Road and St. John’s Road. Learn about the many other local trails at www.norfolktrails.ca

DOAN’S HOLLOWSt. John’s Rd. & Blueline Rd.Doan’s Hollow is a small but interesting area of Norfolk County. It is in the Lynn River valley. Doan’s Hollow School was built in the early years of the 19th century and continued to serve residents until the 1960s. A pioneer cemetery is maintained by Norfolk County. Port Dover’s original drinking water supply came from wells in this area and piped to Port Dover.

PORT DOVER MAUSOLEUMHwy. 6 at Blueline Rd.The abandoned Port Dover Mausoleum was built in the late 1920s. The Great Depres-sion put the builder out of business and the building has sat empty and unfinished since. Above the entrance is inscribed “SIC TRANSIT GLORIA MUNDI” translated from Latin “Thus passes the glory of this world.” Behind is the well-maintained Port Dover Cemetery operated by a community board.

VITTORIA: THE DISTRICT CAPITAL 1815-1825Lamport StreetIn 1800 the London District was formed and justices of the peace with administra-tive and judicial powers were appointed. In 1815 the courts, then held at Charlotteville (Turkey Point) were moved to Tisdale’s Mills (Vittoria). Here a committee consisting of John Backhouse, Thomas Talbot and Robert Nichol was named to supervise the

construction of a court-house and jail. This building was used both by the courts and for occasional religious services until destroyed by fire in 1825. In the following year the district capital was

moved to London.The tranquil village of Vittoria has a long heritage. In the early 1800s it was an important settlement and the hub of the Long Point Settlement. Visit the 19th century Vittoria Town Hall. Christ Anglican Church’s cornerstone was laid in 1844 and cleverly built of Norfolk County pine to resemble stone. Vittoria Baptist Church dates to 1803 and St. Andrew’s United Church dates to 1818.

Half mile south of Vittoria is Kernal Pea-nuts farm and retail store. This operation is the largest grower of peanuts in Canada, which also imports peanuts from distant lands for wholesale and retail customers. It is owned and operated by Ernie and Nancy Racz. A visit to the retail store provides visitors a tasty way to buy peanuts, fudge and more.

SPOOKY HOLLOWSpooky Hollow RoadTurning off Highway 24 towards Norman-dale, the scenery changes from pleasant farms to a dramatic kilometre stretch through forest where the road dips and turns. There are several legends about Spooky Hol-low involving mysterious deaths in the area.

NORMANDALE CENTURY INN2326 Front Road, Normandale

Built in 1875 by John Dey Post, the Norman-dale Century Inn remained a general store until 1996 when current owners Hans and Brenda expanded the business to include an inn and restaurant. The licensed dining room and patio are open daily in summer.

NORMANDALE HISTORYOne of Upper Canada’s most important industrial enterprises, the Normandale ironworks and its blast furnace, built in 1816, played a significant role in the early economic development of the province. Up to 200 men were employed prior to the closure of the blast furnace in 1847, following the exhaustion of the local bog ore deposits.



TURKEY POINT HISTORYAs early as 1798, Lieutenant Governor Simcoe planned to fortify this point. By 1813 nothing had yet been done, and following Procter’s re-treat from Amherstburg the British decided to construct a navy yard and covering fort here. Difficulties in supplying the post, together with the unsuitability of the location led to abandonment of the project after only a blockhouse and part of a palisade had been built.

NORMANDALE FISH HATCHERYTurkey Point RoadNormandale Fish Culture Station is the oldest fish cul-ture station in Ontario. The original main station was built in 1924. The advance-rearing building was added in 1984. The sub-station was built in 1934 nearby on Front Road. MNR has rebuilt the stations into state-of-the-art facilities. Production of At-lantic salmon and chinook salmon for the Lake Ontario stocking programs is being done at Normandale.

CANADA’S FIRST FORESTRY STATION885 Highway #24

Our pioneer forefathers were faced with deeply forested, impenetrable bush land when they arrived in this area. By law they had to clear their free land and farm it. The sandy topsoil of this region blew away in the wind without plant or forest cover. Within 50 years, parts of Norfolk County were desert. Under the leadership of Frank Newman, the St. Williams Forestry Station became the model reforestation and tree seedling production site in the province. It became a showcase and teaching facility as well as a 4,000 acre demonstration forest. Today, a pri-vate company leases the Ministry land that was once Canada’s First Forestry Station.

LONG POINT Long Point is about 40 kilometres long and a kilometre across at its widest point. Lake Erie lies to the south and Long Point Bay lies on the north side. Most of Long Point remains in its natural state.

Lake George at Wellington Park in downtown Simcoe is part of an extensive park system for resi-dents and visitors to enjoy.

Simcoe Little The-atre at 33 Talbot St. is a community-based organization of volunteers creating a quality theatre experience.

Downtown Simcoe offers a wide range of retail stores and services with unique and interesting shops. As well, a large number of restaurants can be found throughout Simcoe.

The ‘Alligator Tugs’ of the late 19th and early 20th century were built in Simcoe and used by the lumber industry to tow log booms. A local group has restored one of the tugs.

The Norfolk Carillon Tower was built as Norfolk’s war memo-rial and offers 23-bell concerts during the summer. Located on Norfolk Street North in Simcoe’s downtown park system along the Lynn River, the carillon was dedicated on June 17, 1925. The heaviest bell is 1,568 lbs. and the smallest is 60 lbs.

Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe’s visit here in 1795 led to a grant to Aaron Culver. By 1812 a hamlet had formed. In 1819-23 Culver laid out a village which he named “Simcoe” and a post office opened in 1829. Streets were surveyed in 1835-36, a court-house and gaol built, and Simcoe was made the seat of the new Talbot District in 1837. Shown above is the present Norfolk County Administration Building at 50 Colborne St. South.

JENSEN CHEESE37 Evergreen Hill Road, SimcoeJensen Cheese is an award winning cheddar cheese manufacturer with its head office and storage facility located in Simcoe and its factory located in Wilton, Ontario. The third generation family run business specializes in artisan crafted fine cheddar that is aged in underground storages. Cheddar is held up to five years, and sometimes older. The no nonsense approach to manufacturing laid out by patriarch and master cheese maker Arne Jensen in 1925 carries on to today. Jensen Cheese manufactures a variety of cheese that includes Colby, marble, specialty Brick, Ched-dar and have recently introduced a three year aged smoked cheddar.

NORFOLK COUNTY FAIRMake plans now to visit the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show in October. In its 175th year and the fourth largest fair in Ontario, with over 125,000 visitors, the fair features agricul-tural displays, craft exhibits, food vendors, art demonstrations, talent competitions, midway rides, celebrity chefs and extraordinary grand-stand shows. You will be able to see horses and ponies, sheep, cattle, poultry and much more. Norfolk County Fair in Simcoe is ranked among the province’s top events to visit.

Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre overlooks Quance Park with a large agri-cultural collection on tobacco, ginseng and alternate crops grown in Norfolk County.


BIKING“Le Tour de Norfolk” on July 18 and 19, 2015 is a recreational bicycle tour and an excellent opportunity to explore the towns and villages of Norfolk County, see and learn about the crops growing in the fields, and explore the picturesque back roads. MILES OF BEACHESThere are miles of sandy beaches along the South Coast in Norfolk County from Port Do-ver to Long Point. Take some time to discover them. The largest beach is at Long Point. South Coast Shuttle can take you there.

WATER ACTIVITIESTurkey Point has two miles of sandy beach with safe swimming for all ages and ample beach parking available. Fishing, hiking, wa-ter sports and golfing are all readily available at Turkey Point. The beach hamlet, which is home to a small number of year-round residents comes alive in the summer with a variety of restaurants and businesses, as well as a provincial park.

BOATINGBoating is very popular in Norfolk County. There are marinas from Port Dover to Long Point offering facilities for power boaters and sailboats. Watching the boats from the pier is a popular pastime on summer days.

Waterford Old Town HallThe Old Town Hall has been in the centre of Waterford since 1902. It is an integral part of the community’s heri-tage and identity. The historic building is used for concerts, art exhibitions, act-ing classes, day camps, yoga and many other activities. As was reported when the building opened “the second floor consists of one large hall and is entered from a spacious stairway of three land-ings starting near the main entrance. At the back of the hall the seats are raised.”


Waterford celebrates Pumpkinfest every October with a parade and activities throughout the community.

Waterford Ponds and hiking trails along former rail lines are attracting more visi-tors to Waterford every year.

RAMBLIN’ ROAD BREWERY FARM2970 Swimming Pool Rd., LaSaletteRamblin’ Road is Ontario’s first and only Brewery Farm, located just south of La Salette. Like a lot of farms, this place can be a little hard to find. You’ll need to be good at navigating country roads, have a GPS handy, or know someone in the area who can point you in the right direction. Once there, you’ll find an actual working farm with crops growing, a hop garden flourish-ing and plenty of activity. Like most farms, this is a going concern, an enterprise. The big difference is our harvest is premium quality, small batch hand crafted beer. They grow hops on the Brewery Farm, draw pure spring water and use the finest Canadian barley and yeast.

WINERIES IN NORFOLKHistory says that wine was first made in this area in the late 1600s when French missionaries visited. Today this region along the coast of Lake Erie is an emerging wine region in Ontario. A growing number of wineries are open to the public for tast-ings, tours and exciting events. Plan a tour and discover the local wineries distinctive wines, wander the vineyards and indulge in the splendor of fine food and wine pairings.
