One of the first things you will notice when you walk into the Barrel Restaurant on the Queensway in Simcoe, is the display case filled

with photos of teams they have sponsored.I know that Tom Daikos, owner of the Barrel, is all about

community. For the past twenty-eight years (I know, twenty-eight years already!), Tom and his family have taken pride in being involved on the local sports front!

We all recognize how great the food and service is at the Barrel, but what about this love of sports?

Tom told me that sports were important to him as a child growing up in Greece! Swimming and long distance running were two of the many sports he partook in during his youth. His eyes lit up as he explained how his daughters played soccer and competed in track when they were young. He was very proud to say that his granddaughters were learning to swim! It was easy to see his love of family and sports.

Tom believes in the value of sports to a community and its children. He sees that sports can be critical to one’s wellbeing. It is through team sponsorships that Tom is proud to lend a hand!

This love of sport has translated well into his business model for the Barrel. Along with dedication to service and product, there is a team approach as the whole staff works together to create a family environment. Tom reminded me that he still has staff that have been with him since opening day. This speaks volumes about the kind of folks Tom and his family are.

As for the food, the care and preparation that goes into every meal has been a staple that folks in Norfolk have come to enjoy and appreciate. Tom's love of food is equally as strong. Classic Italian dishes with homemade techniques and presentations are evident in every dish. "At the Barrel," says Tom, "we are passionate about food, cuisine is like religion, and it's the quality of the ingredients that's most sacred. We use the finest local ingredients to create mouth-watering dishes that are bursting with flavour. Come experience a little taste of Italy in Norfolk."

Next time you stop in at the Barrel, take a look at all the different photos that hang in the lobby, and you will quickly realize that the Barrel is more than just great food… it’s part of our community!

According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information cycling injuries are by far the most common injury from summer sports and recreational activity, accounting for half of all hospital admissions. An alarming 78% of those hospitalized with a head injury were not wearing a helmet. A properly fitted and correctly worn bike helmet can cut the risk of serious head injury by up to 85%.

DAY 2It had already been 24 hours since the 3 Days at the Fair ultramarathon had begun and the real challenges of

our adventure were about to commence. Sandy of our support crew kept a Journal throughout the event. It began Day 2 with the following: “Beautiful morning. Smooth sailing ahead???”

After having taken a sleep break, I seemed fine staying at a very relaxed pace, running parts of each lap and walking sections whenever I felt a slight strain. My belief was that I would have the best chance for success if I just kept moving without major breaks – relentless forward progress. I was being extremely conservative in my approach as I had never tried an event longer than one day.

Corina’s longest previous run was 12 hours – her wonderful performance in Las Vegas in February. So she was really in uncharted territory now. Sandy noted, “Very tough start for Corina today. Her toes are destroyed and her quads have micro tears all through the muscle. Really tough to watch. She finally decided to lay down for a half hour to collect her thoughts and settle herself.” It worked as she forced herself to get going again.

In the late afternoon as I was on the first part of the out-and-back section, I saw Corina and Bianca coming toward me. Bianca had been off-site for several hours doing schoolwork. It made me smile seeing them walking together chatting quietly. Each was carrying a drink. When I met them Bianca told me hers was a milkshake for me from the Dairy Queen in town. It tasted so cool and refreshing, perfectly hitting the spot at a hot, humid time of day.

Shortly afterwards, I was informed by the crew that Corina

was now on her 100 mile lap, a significant milestone. They would be going over to cheer for her and celebrate. I thought I might be able to catch her if I ran the full lap. I did so, putting in my quickest time of the day but she had finished and moved on before I could get there.

I walked a bit with Sandy and got an update. Sandy, who was entered in the marathon so that she could accompany us for a while when needed, had been doing laps with Corina. She informed me that she herself only had 19 laps to go to finish her first marathon ever. I went over and checked the computer. Sandy had been thinking in kilometres; she thought she had completed 23 km but, in fact, while she was helping us she had done 23 miles, only 3 to go. The pace picked up and she finished her marathon easily. To celebrate, she and I decided to write a book together with the working title “How To Run a Stress-free Marathon”. We didn’t feel the task would be too onerous as we planned the book to be only one page long with short sections on not thinking about it in advance, no training, no special nutrition, no deciding until the last moment and no sleep the night before. It worked for Sandy (so maybe it can work for you!).

A little while later I had my 100 miles. We continued into the night. Around 10:30 p.m. I passed the existing Canadian 48 hour record for my age group. It turned out to be a bit special because in the middle of the lap two runners I had met during the race caught up to me and one asked if I had any significant number coming up soon. I told him as a matter of fact I did, on this lap. He told a couple of others and they started telling everyone we caught up to as we increased our pace in the excitement. By the

time we turned the corner and came up to the timing mat, I had an entourage hooting and hollering. It was a lot of fun and they all congratulated me when I rang the celebratory bell. Runners had been asked to ring the big bell, as Corina had done earlier, when they completed a key lap.

We continued on, slowly and methodically, through our second night. I came in to sleep but had a somewhat fitful rest.

DAY 3Rain had been predicted for Saturday. Our plan was to get in as many laps as possible and then rest when

there was a long rain or thunderstorm. However, in reality it was not so simple.

From Sandy’s diary, “Corina’s feet are an absolute mess. I have never seen toes so chewed up. I don’t know how she’ll ever keep going. We’ve been treating the feet with patches, duct tape, Voltaren… anything we can think of to relieve the pain. Her back is killing her and her legs and feet are so swollen. Greg worked on her back for a while. But in true Corina style she got up, put her shoes on and headed out again. I needed help. I needed her to feel the love and pride and respect that people have for her. I went on the North Shore Runners Facebook page and asked her friends to send positive thoughts her way. The pouring in of love and support for her was unbelievable; such words of encouragement. It wasn’t long until we saw her perk up a bit and move along a little better. Charlie kept plugging along, asking for updates on his friend.”

There was a heavy thunderstorm in the late afternoon but afterwards the weather was fine. Sometime after midnight I came into our site hoping Greg was still up and that I could get a massage. In fact, Christine had just made dinner for him. It must have looked appetizing because I have been told that I ate it. Greg did allow me to do so, but I’m sure it was reluctantly.

For some of the night Christine and Sandy walked with Corina and Christine walked with me. She also completed way more than a marathon with many miles this third night. I came in for a sleep break when I realized I was walking sideways and was barely moving. At least I was still somewhat capable of making a decision. In the early morning Corina went on her own to finish up. The full crew was there to congratulate her when she broke the Canadian age group 72 hour record. Unfortunately, I missed that too. A while later I walked my last mile with Greg, chatting and enjoying the finish.

One of the best aspects for me was that both Corina and I got our records, a main goal that we had first discussed ten months before. I didn’t go to the awards ceremony, opting instead for a shower. Then Bianca made me a great-tasting breakfast of scrambled eggs. I sat with my feet up and just appreciated the moment. Notes:1. Corina finished with 178 miles and Charlie with 170 miles, both Canadian age group records.2. Thank you to Sandy Miller for permission to use sections from her Journal.

What if Norfolk County had a world-renowned artist, whose paintings were displayed at major galleries? Let’s say for example, Toronto’s

Roberts Gallery (Roberts Gallery was established in 1842… Since the mid 1950’s, the gallery has specialized in Canadian Art and has had the honour of handling some of Canada’s best known artists. - robertsgallery.net)… and let’s say this person decided to show his work in a brand new art space in Port Dover.

If such a person existed, I’m sure that we would all go and view his/her art!

Well, for as long as I can remember, we have had an artist of that magnitude here. His name is Bruce Steinhoff and folks, he is that good. He is one of the great Canadian landscape painters and he will be presenting some of his work locally at gallery23 (23 Market Street West, Port Dover) from June 26 to August 21 so I am encouraging you to stop by and feast with your eyes.

As for Bruce, I guess I have known him since I was a kid back in Dover. I ran cross-country with his brother and heard all about Bruce, his tennis and his running back then. I had no clue he was an artist until a bit later on. Nowadays he lives near the beach in Port Ryerse, not far from my family. I will see him kayaking, running or riding his bike and most times we stop and chat. To me, he is always easy going and one with himself. Bruce has the self-assurance to live life his way. He seems to do what he wants and at the same time realizes life is what it is.

I once asked him if he would chat with a group of kids about becoming an artist and he flat out said no. He explained it was not an easy existence and he did not want to mislead the kids. I didn’t understand at first, but then I realized he was trying to protect them from disillusionment. He knew how tough it could be and that it was not for everyone. Make no mistake Bruce would help anybody out, but he realized first-hand the sacrifices that are often made for art.

Bruce isn’t about the glitz and glam of his work. I think if he had his way he would be just as happy if everything was stacked in a pile on the floor as he would be if they were hanging in a famous gallery. From a nature perspective Bruce probably understands Norfolk better than 90 percent of us. He captures beauty that most of us walk by, so stop by gallery23 and indulge in Bruce’s work!

In case you haven’t noticed, it is sunscreen time! When I stopped into Clark’s Pharmasave at the White Horse Plaza, Simcoe, I decided to ask Barb Anstead, Natural Health Consultant, if there was such a thing as an all-natural sunscreen. She was excited to say that there was

and directed me to the selection they had. Barb went on to explain that the natural brands have a base

that is chemical free, provides the same protection as the other products and is healthy for your body. I discovered that there is even a natural sunscreen for little ones, which is great! Getting an early start with proper sunscreen for your children is a must. I admit the price is a bit higher, but then again it is worth it. Substance Natural Sunscreen and Badger Natural & Organic Sunscreens are a few of the brands that Pharmasave is carrying. Check them out!Dave Scott

Most gardeners don’t realize that the actual botanical geranium is that of our

perennial plant we call Cranesbill! (Sometimes referred to as the hardy geranium)

The name comes from the shape of the unsprung column produced from the centre of the old flower, which in some species is long and looks like the bill of a crane. Of the 422 identified species of this genus, which are found growing in all temperate regions of the world, most grow wild in the eastern part of the Mediterranean region. The popularity of this plant is that it has the simple charm of wildflowers (found in white, pink, purple or blue) and they fill niches in a shaded woodland setting, along perennial borders or in rock gardens.

Now the other family member of Geraniaceae is the Pelargonium or what we all call the geranium. These are the generally half-hardy plants which are either grown from seed or cuttings every year and sold for bedding in spring and discarded after flowering in the autumn.

So why such a difficult name? (Since

most of us refuse to use it.) Our annual geranium, which is a native of South Africa, was introduced as Pelargonium which came from the Greek word pelargós, meaning stork, as the seed head of this plant looked like a stork's beak. (Hence the name Storksbill is sometimes used, are you confused yet?)

Pelargonium Passion:In the garden centre business we

divide out the some 200 types of pelargoniums into four basic groupings for simplification.

1. The Zonal Geraniums - Upright, bushy, succulent-stemmed, grown for their single or double flowers. Undoubtedly our most popular type for bedding, planters and hangers.

2. The Ivy-leaved Geraniums - Trailing evergreen with stiff almost wax-like fleshy leaves, great for hanging baskets as they are very drought tolerant.

3. The Scented-leaved Geraniums - Shrubby evergreen, mostly cultivated for their scented and very often distinctly lobed or variegated leaves. Scented varieties include lemon, strawberry, rose and Old Spice.

4. The Regal Geranium – a bushy evergreen, producing single (rarely double) flowers. Commonly called the Martha Washington, they prefer cooler temperatures and part shade environs as opposed to the other types listed.

Many pelargoniums are naturally bushy. They can be pruned back anytime to encourage further branching. Tall varieties and vigorously growing cultivars can be trained on canes to form a pillar (sort of like topiary for flowers). Young plants of ivy-leaved cultivars are best pruned back to promote fullness and stronger branching. Always remember to dead-head these plants to encourage continuous flowering throughout the summer period!

Proud to be Canadian

Answers: Toronto / Ottawa / Winnipeg Federal; provincial/territorial; municipal/local - the name of your MPAboriginal, British and FrenchRecently I was talking

with a lady who had just become a Canadian citizen.

It was a pleasure to hear the pride and enthusiasm she had about the

process! In the last session she and several other persons met with a judge who was wearing his black robe.

He asked them some questions about Canada and after that they all swore allegiance, sang O Canada and were given their papers. She told me she sang as loud as she could!! And I truly believe that!! Hence the title of this article!! As we continued to chat I told her I was very interested in the questions they were asked. She said they were based on information from Discover Canada, a booklet they were given about the history of Canada. They were also given copy of the Citizenship Study Guide to help prepare for the questions they

might be asked; the Guide has questions and answers!!

It was this Guide that got me thinking! How many of us born in Canada would know the answers?

The Canada Quiz has some questions similar to citizenship questions. What is the capitol of Ontario? of Canada? of Manitoba? What are the three levels of government?Who is your Member of Parliament?Who were the founding peoples of Canada?

Happy Canada Day!!!!!

Some people choose to "get away" with less sleep, and this attitude is often rewarded in our society. But lack of sleep can actually make you less productive,

even if you feel as though you're getting more done. And sleep deprivation can do much more than hurt your productivity - it can damage your health as well.

Sleep helps your body to repair itself. It also helps your mind absorb and "file" the day's learning. When we deprive ourselves of sleep, we notice the effects both mentally and physically. In the short term, these effects include:

• fatigue• irritability• careless mistakes• difficulty concentrating• slower reaction times• increased stressThese short-term effects can affect our relationships, our

performance at work or school, and our ability to enjoy life. They may even increase the risk of injury and accidents at work or on the road.

After only a few days of sleep deprivation, the body undergoes changes similar to "fast-forward" aging: memory loss, metabolism problems (with sugar and hormones), and poor athletic performance. If sleep deprivation continues over the long term, it increases the risk of more serious health problems, such as:

• a weakened immune system• diabetes (the body cannot process sugar properly)• depression• high blood pressure• obesityThe good news is that you can prevent these long-term

problems by recognizing the early signs that you aren't getting enough sleep, and increasing the amount of sleep you're getting until you feel well rested. But remember: the greater the "sleep debt" that you have, the longer it will take to recover.

TipsDo you wake up

feeling refreshed, alert, and ready to meet the challenges of the day? If not, here are some tips to help you get there:

• Keep regular hours. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, including weekends.

• Avoid taking long naps during the day. These could make it harder to fall asleep at night. A short nap, however, is okay as long as you can sleep well during the night.

• Develop a "sleep ritual." If you do the same things before you go to bed each night, it will train your body to get ready for sleep.

• Take some time to relax and unwind before you go to sleep. You may try stretching, relaxation exercises, a hot shower or bath, meditation, or a glass of hot milk help you to relax and prepare for sleep. Avoid activities that may be emotionally upsetting a few hours before you go to bed.

• Avoid caffeine and medications that may keep you awake (e.g., stimulants) in the evening. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if your medication may be keeping you awake.

• If you are taking a diuretic (such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide), take it in the morning. Diuretics increase urination, and this may keep you up at night if you take them later in the day.

• Avoid drinking alcohol right before bedtime. Alcohol can interrupt sleep, leading to a poor quality of sleep.

• If you smoke, consider quitting. Smokers have more trouble falling asleep, and wake up more often during the night, than non-smokers.

• Make your bedroom "sleep-friendly." Your room should be kept cool, dark, and quiet. If you are bothered by the noises around you, try using a pair of foam earplugs, a fan, or a white noise generator to block out the noise.

• Get a comfortable mattress. If you wake up feeling stiff and sore, or if you aren't sleeping as well as you were a year ago, it may be time for a new mattress. A good mattress should gently support all points of your body and give you enough room to move freely.

• Exercise regularly. This can help relieve stress and make it easier for you to sleep. Don't exercise too close to bedtime if you find this makes it harder for you to sleep.

• Don't feel guilty about going to bed. Think of sleep as an investment in your health and productivity.

If you have not taken the time to review and understand the latest craze, “Down Imaging and Side Imaging” technology in fish finders, you

soon better. These new features will certainly improve your fish/structure finding capabilities and subsequently should equate in improving your catch success.

By now we all know that standard Sonar utilizes a narrow beam in the shape of a cone to look straight down under the boat. Side Imaging uses two 180 degree beams, one on each side of the boat. The distance covered on each side is 240 feet for a total distance of 480 feet. This allows you to see objects and fish in the water and their relationship to your boat’s position. You can map Inner Long Point Bay in one-half day. Side Imaging will only work in a depth of approximately two hundred feet. It is best to operate your boat at approximately three miles per hour to obtain optimum results when employing either of these features.

Derek Strub, one of Canada’s leading professional anglers on the competitive bass tournament circuit, fully relies on his electronics for pre-tournament scouting and, of course, during the tournament as well. If Derek pre-tournament fished for ten hours, he would spend less than one hour actually angling. The bulk of his time is spent watching his Humminbird GPS/Fish Finder using Side Imaging to locate structure and fish.

Down Imaging works essentially the same as Sonar but with much more accuracy. For example, if we were to split the Humminbird screen into Down Imaging and Sonar, the signal we receive on Sonar may show a large clump on the bottom. We may be confused as to whether the display is showing a tight knit school of fish or weeds or a tree. On further study of the Down Imaging display, we are able to see that it is actually a tree lying over on its side with many branches. As you can imagine this is beneficial to you as an angler.

In Side Imaging mode, you must visualize your boat at the top of the screen. The darker section in the middle of the screen is the information from the sonar beam. Fish, structure and vegetation on each side of the boat will appear in greater detail. Fish will cast a shadow on the bottom. We find it easier at times to look for these shadows to identify fish. The farther the shadow is from the fish, the higher the fish is sitting in the water column.

As long as the weed growth is not to the surface you can also locate openings in weed flats. Incredible! Becky and I now know where to pitch a jig and pig or worm for a largemouth bass.

In the Down Imaging Mode, the boat has to be visualized as sitting in the top right corner of the screen. Without going into great detail here, you can read this as sonar but with a higher degree of clarity. You should be able to distinguish the dense clump on the bottom clearly as a tree. Try running the split screen between Sonar and Down Imaging and you will soon recognize the difference.

By observing all three views in split screen; Sonar, Side Imaging and Down Imaging; you will be able to locate fish and holding structure and therefore be fishing in a highly productive area quicker than before.

Interpreting the Side Imaging and Down Imaging displays will take some time. The time spent will be well worth it in the end.

There is a great deal to learn about Side and Down Imaging that we cannot even scratch the surface of in an article of this size. Please take the time to research these tremendous technical features. Or if you see us on the water, or at shows, we will take the time to give you a quick demonstration on my Humminbird units.

Summer is finally here, exams are done and teenagers are now free! So what do we do? In the ideal world we would like to do a whole bunch of

things, but in reality, our part time jobs can't afford that. My friends and I are always wanting to do something fun but not expensive. So we like to go to the beach. Every once and a while we find a day that we all have off of work and we head to the beach.

We are at the age now where some of us can drive which makes it even more fun. Usually we try to leave fairly early in the morning so that we get to the beach around 10 or 11 a.m. This way there is lots of room to park and we can pick just the right spot on the beach.

Before you can go to the beach, there are a few things you need to do to ensure you have a perfect day. The most important thing you need is sunscreen. As a teenage girl myself I know everyone wants that perfect tan but you still need sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun's rays. Even if it is a cloudy day, you can still get burnt so don't forget it or you will regret it. Also make sure to re-apply it throughout the day because it will wear off from going in and out of the water. The next thing to pack is your favourite bathing suit, a towel, some beach blankets to sit on, sunglasses and maybe a hat. As well you may even want to pack a football or a Frisbee in case you get bored of tanning and swimming.

As I said earlier, my friends and I don't like to spend a lot of money, so what we try to do is pack a fun picnic lunch. The night before we all go out and buy some of our favourite snacks. Of course we all like our chips and candy but we need to make sure to pack some healthy things too. Then at lunch time we all pull out what we brought and share with each other. Another thing that is important to bring is lots of water to drink especially on those hot summer days. So next time you plan on a beach day and don't feel like spending your money at a fry stand, try packing a picnic lunch.

The last thing you need to do is check the weather the night before you leave. Every year, rescue crews are sent out

to save people from undertows. For those who don't know, an undertow is an underwater current that pulls your feet out from under you. It is extremely important to watch out for these because even the strongest of swimmers can't beat the undertows. The North shore of Lake Erie is the most vulnerable out of all the Great Lakes to get undertows. So if you see that there is some rough water, it is best to stay out just in case.

While at the beach and in the water it is important to keep some simple beach safety tips in mind. The first one is not to go out too deep, especially if you aren't a very strong swimmer. A good rule to follow is to not go out of the roped-off area. But if you are swimming, make sure you are with a buddy. Also if you are in the water, make sure you re-apply your sunscreen so you don't burn as sunscreen washes off in the water. Throughout the day the weather can change and sometimes it changes very quickly. So make sure you keep an eye on the sky and get out of the water when you need to.

But what's a day at the beach, without ice cream? After a day of relaxing you have to end your day with it. My personal favourite place to go is Utterly Kool in Long Point, but if it's a hot day make sure you grab lots of napkins, because trust me it's gonna melt!

At the end of the day, we are all exhausted from the sun. Then depending on when we decide to pack up and go, we will sometimes grab something quick to eat. By the time we get home and unpack our bags we are ready to go to bed.

So with a little preparation, a few safety tips, and some great friends, you can have a perfect day at the beach without spending a lot of money!
