Most Education Awards Incentive Noting the crucial nature of earning education awards the District recognizes and thanks the clubs that contribute the most toward this critical factor. Along with our gratitude these clubs will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to the Toastmasters International catalog store. The ten (10) clubs within the District that will receive the gift certificates for having the highest ratio of education awards per club as of October 15, 2014 are listed below.

Club officers attend district-sponsored training twice each year. The District offers many training opportunities to club officers as either a TLI or Club Officer Training (COT). Of the two, Toastmasters Int. suggests attending TLI. As such, the District is working to improve the quantity and quality of the education sessions offered at TLIs.

Reasons a TLI is Best Standard and approved format delivered by experienced instructors.

Assurance officers will receive training credit.

Opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

2015 Leadership Breakfasts Remember to mark your calendar for the Leadership Breakfasts coming in February 2015. There will be two events this year, one in the Reno area on February 7 and one in the Sacramento area on February 14. Both events are gearing up to be special and you will benefit from attending either or both. Of note, the keynote for the Sacramento Leadership Breakfast will be presented by 2005 World Champion of Public Speaking Lance Miller. You will be able to find more detailed information about each event on the District website as it becomes available. Register on Eventbrite today to get the best pricing.

Revitalized Education Program Update

Research by Toastmasters International has identified the core competencies that are the foundation of Toastmasters learning:

Public speaking Interpersonal communication Leading and managing Leading strategically Confidence

These core competencies, and the many sub-competencies that support them, are the structure of the revitalized education program under development. The new program will provide members with:

Customized learning, based on the core competencies, that fits their personal goals. Earlier recognition to reward success and encourage continuing achievement. Projects that challenge members, require increased effort as they progress and result in

demonstrable proficiency gains. A formalized member-mentoring program. Online access and achievement tracking.

Developing and deploying this new program is an incredibly complex task. Here are a few of the questions that can be answered today:

The format of the club meeting will continue to have speakers and evaluations, Table Topics, a Toastmaster of the day, and of course the Ah Counter.

We anticipate the overlap period will be 24 months. To ensure that the education program is fully developed and structurally sound, we will

conduct beta testing with selected members and clubs. The timing of the beta testing will be announced in late 2014, with a program launch in 2015.

There is a significant amount of the new education program that is still under development, and Learning Masters and Ambassadors will continue to be a vital part of the process to ensure that members and clubs around the world are represented, and that we're able to carry messaging about the program to clubs in person.

District Governor Brian Hatano, DTM December 2014 [email protected]

Dear Fellow Toastmasters:

During the holiday season it’s easy to get lost in the festivities. I invite you to take a pause.

Invest a few minutes to reflect, to take stock of your life of where you’ve been, where you are and

where the next few years may lead you. Your moment of contemplation may have the same result

as mine. It’s one of realizing how lucky we are, no matter our place.

My self-evaluation came recently when a group of Toastmasters visited Solano State Prison in

Vacaville for the banner presentation for the district’s new club behind bars, Delta Breeze. It is the

epitome of a “closed club”—only the two sponsors reside outside the prison. (Thanks to Louise

Houdelette, PDG, DTM, and Brian Richards, DTM, who were the driving forces in getting the club

chartered, and helped get gate clearance for our visit.)

Listening to speeches by the inmates - many of whom will be in prison for the rest of their lives - it

was easy to forget we were sitting within the confines of a prison. Their speeches were well-

crafted. Their meeting was run efficiently, as good as many of our other clubs. An inmate who had

been in prison for 25 years told a heart-warming story of how he and his dog were saved from

oncoming traffic by a stranger when he was nine years old. Amazing story-telling ability. Were he

able to compete in our contests, he definitely would impress the judges.

One personal story stuck with me. An inmate who had been involved with a Gavel Club at San

Quentin prison was upset that he was being transferred to Solano. Why? Because he was enjoying

his Toastmasters’ experience at San Quentin and was forced to leave it behind.

A few months after he arrived at Solano Prison, the Delta Breeze club started. Now he could

continue with Toastmasters! The joy in his voice and seen on his face as he told his story

expressed sheer gratitude for getting the chance to be a part of Toastmasters again.

Even though he will never again have the freedom to live like us, he is finding Toastmasters a

worthwhile activity by giving speeches and participating in the meetings. The other members were

anxious to speak and genuinely wanted to be there. It showed in their demeanor and willingness to

participate. They are appreciative for the meetings held on Wednesday evenings once a month.

We should all be so grateful.

From our family to yours, have a great holiday season!

Brian and Cindy Hatano

A moment of GRATITUDE makes a difference in your attitude. –Bruce Wilkerson

Area Governor Visits, Round 1

Round 1 of Club Visits by area governors ended on Nov. 30,

with the AGs visiting 85% of their clubs.

Great work by the area governors in divisions H and I who visited

all of their active clubs. They didn’t visit two just-chartered clubs in

Division H and one club in Division I that is no longer meeting.

Divisions B and E were one club visit short of reaching 100%.

Kudos to the 22 area governors listed on the right who visited all

of their clubs in round 1.

Area governors help sustain the relationship between clubs and

districts through club visits, which are required twice a year.

Second-round club visits begin January 1, and reports must be

submitted by May 31. When a visit report is submitted online

through District Central, a copy is automatically sent to the district

governor, lieutenant governors, division governor, area governor

and president of the club visited.
