Area governors interact with club members more than any other district leader. They help preserve the relationship between clubs and districts through club visits, which are required twice a year.

Club visits take place between July 1 and Nov. 30 (round 1) and between Jan. 1 and May 31 (round 2).

The second round of Club Officer Train-ing—now through Feb. 28—is an invalua-ble opportunity for leadership develop-ment.

Even though officers attended training the fall, they can glean nuggets of knowledge during the second round of training

The success of clubs has a lot to do with having the officers trained and equipped to work with their members to achieve their goals.

Training is an important goal in the Dis-tinguished Club Program; and other goals are fueled by having officers trained.

Educational Incentives, 2013-14

Congratulations on a great first half of 2013-14

T he two halves of the Toastmasters

year are roughly divided by the holiday season. The holiday season serves as a natural break to review and plan for the second half.

What did we do well that we need to contin-ue? What are our short-comings that need at-tention? By planning our strategy NOW for the stretch run to the end of the year on June 30, we are most apt to succeed.

As a district, we are on the right track, with much to be proud of. I applaud and thank all of you who helped mem-bers, clubs and areas set a strong foundation for the second half.

Nov. 30, 73% of the 37 area gov-ernors visited ALL of their clubs.

When visit reports are submitted online, a copy of the completed document is automatically sent to the district governor, lieutenant governors, division governor and president of the club visited so action can be initiated to help make them successful.

Thanks to all area governors who are making a big difference!

planning for failure.” -Alan Lakein

Happy New Year! This is usually the time of year when we make personal resolutions, so let me ask you a few questions about what you're intending and hoping to do this year:

What are your goals for 2014? What are you expecting to do, achieve?  ‐ What are your hopes and dreams? ‐ What are your immediate (within 30 days) goals? What are your long term goals? Dreams and goals are a great start, but....  ‐ What are your genuine intentions to make your goals, hopes, and dreams a reality? ‐ What's your game plan to ensure success?

A friend of mine sent me this Plan for SUCCESS that I think will work well for me, so I wanted to share it with you. Choose your word of the year. Then choose three or four words, or actions, as a guide to help you stay focused and on track. Don't just try for “your best year ever,” instead, have a GREAT year. A Fulfilling and PROFITABLE year… A HEALTHY year… A HAPPY year.

My word this year is “creating.” A few meaningful words that apply to my vision for success are "team", "open", possibility, fun, and "empowering". I will focus on those words that create ideas which create actions. I think this will be great fun as well as a plan that really works. I believe that choosing meaningful words that apply to my vision will help me take decisive actions. Creating from my words and actions can be the driving force to achieving my goals.    Next, my plan that will set into motion my understanding, determination, and intentions. Following my plan will keep me focused. Here are my Action words for 2013 – I hope they inspire you select your own:

1. Contact someone new every day. I get great new ideas and thoughts when discussing and talking with people. Contact is how and where I connect with most everything in my life. Contact has been and continues to be the core of my success. Every dime I have earned in sales or any other position I can trace back to someone I contacted. Word of mouth and a good referral is 10 times better anything else in building teams or achieving the highest sales awards. Keeping in touch provides me with both purpose and process, discipline and drive, and will lead me to success and fulfillment. Contact is one thing I recommend and encourage everyone to do.

2. Finish what I start. I have more projects and opportunities than I can shake a stick at. I intend to see each one through to completion. In my experience, there are very few things more frustrating than the mental nag of a project not complete. I’m speaking for myself, and challenging myself, but at the same time I’m speaking to you and challenging you. Finish what you start. It sounds so simple, yet time seems to fly away during the course of a day, a week, a month, or a year. The process I will try to employ is “time allocation.” Rather than manage my time (something I have always found both impossible and improbable), I will allocate 30‐minute time segments to projects and tasks in order to ensure I have allotted time for completion.

3. Get in shape: This year for sure (even though I said that last year, and the year before). There’s a fundamental link between physical well being and mental freedom to create. My intention this year is to get in shape. Shape up: my business and personal life that need shaping and re‐shaping, from organization and personal skills to money and sales to relationships. Shape the future. My age now demands I make plans that include me and exclude me. Succession is not just a word or a plan, it’s also a reality. These are three huge elements in leadership, life, and quality of living.

So this year I’m taking personal responsibility to achieve my needs and desires. I have my goals, I have my plans, and I am going for it! Come join the fun!

It’s Time to Review Your Distinguished Club Program Goals The program year is at the halfway mark, and many clubs are on their way to earning Distinguished recognition. Please check your Club Success Plan to gauge progress toward meeting goals or to see if adjustments must be made. An online version of the Distinguished Club Program and Club Success Plan (Item 1111) is available.

Announcing the New Nominating Committee Chair It is with great thanks that I introduce you to Barbara Brackett, DTM, PDG. Barbara is heading the Nominating Committee for the 2014 May election of officers. Barbara has been a Toastmaster for the past 25 years and has held all offices at the club, division and district levels. She also chaired the 2000 Region1 Conference in Reno and the 2004 International Convention in Reno. As Toastmasters International continues to expand and grow as an organization, Barbara is committed to growing and developing leaders to meet these challenges within District 39. She is looking forward to working with our candidates.

Review Protocol for Campaigns and Elections   Attention district governors: By now, your nominating committee is seeking 2014‐2015 district officer candidates. To ensure successful district elections, please follow procedure and review the elections section of the District Leader Resources webpage (see links at left). Also, please read Protocol 9.0: District Campaigns and Elections.

Audio/Video Equipment Committee The district has made a significant and much needed investment in our own video and audio technology. We took advantage of the Black Friday sales and purchased a video camera with carrying case and tripod; and a wireless microphone system and a professional PA system with speakers and stands. The District is creating an Audio/Video Committee under the direction of the District Governor. The Committee will establish a team of

videographers who will be available to tape and record contests, conferences, and special events. The committee would also produce training materials that will be videotaped and used throughout the District. We are looking for candidates, who are qualified and trained to use this technology, to chair and serve on the committee. Please talk to Arne or Joey if you are interested.

Area Governors – Second Round Club Visits Have Begun! Area governors interact with club members more than any other district leader. They help preserve the relationship between clubs and districts through club visits, which are required twice a year. The second round of club visits are between January 1 and May 31. When the visit reports are submitted online through District Central, a copy of the completed document will automatically be sent to the district governor, lieutenant governors, division governor and president of the club visited. Congratulations to January Hall of Fame Toastmaster Trish Lenkiewicz, Area 11 Governor, who has already submitted 2 club visit reports!

Increase in Minimum Club Membership from 6 to 8 Members As leaders in District 39, we all know the importance of providing our members with an exceptional experience that gives them opportunities to learn, grow and achieve. Beginning with the April 2014 dues renewal, all clubs must have eight members in order to be eligible to renew (three of whom must be renewing their memberships). If you believe your club will be in jeopardy as a result of this change, please contact me and request a club coach to help your club recover. A club coach will assist by:

Observing and analyzing the club environment, then assisting the club in generating solutions  Helping the club develop a plan with goals for improvement  Making it possible for the club's leaders and members to implement the plan  Instilling enthusiasm, fidelity and a sense of responsibility for the club's future

To learn more about a club coach, please click here www.toastmasters.org/Club_Coach_Flier.aspx.

Spring Training The District Trio, Joey, Brian and Louise, will be attending district leader mid‐year training in Emeryville on January 16‐18, 2014. We will be learning new things to share during our own division and area governor’s training on February 9. Your personal invitations will be coming soon.
