Dennis and Jan Peterson
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. I don’t think we can say it has been a
boring time this year. We start with the Covid-19 which got everyone locked down then
they say its getting better so we can get back toward normal but then it gets worse again
so now we are back further than we were the first time. So now we all get to wear face
coverings and stay home. So far, we have not had a rally this summer which I know we
are all feeling. It really hurts to not see all our friends and share the fun of a rally. At least
some of us were riding a little, that is until it got so hot, we had to cut back on the riding
also. Of course, there has been the other stuff we don’t even want to talk about.
So, what are we to do? Well one thing we can do is a little training. University has been
offering some training online and it has been exceptionally good training. The class have
been available at different times and days. This gives you a chance to sign up for the time
that best suits you. I know our own University Coordinator has been listing the classes in
his newsletter article so take a look and give it a try. You never know; you might like it
and it will give you a chance to get the training and never step out in the heat. I know, I
was not sure about this type of training, but Jan and I have been taking what they call
GWRRA 101. This covers almost everything you need to know about how our associa-
tion operates. Right now the class is been given just to the District Directors but it will
soon be offered to everyone. If you have any questions about anything in GWRRA this is
a class that is a must for you.
Another thing you may want to try is getting ready for next Spring Fling. You have cos-
tumes to work on, skits to put together and if you wish you can volunteer to help plan the
event. We have lots of time to work on all that is required for this event so join us and
give us some of your expertise and lets make this a great rally.
Let’s not forget to plan some rides for when it cools down a little. There is no reason why
we can’t plan a ride with no date in mind and hold the plans until the weather cools down
a little. There is no reason why we can’t plan a ride with no date in mind and hold the plans until the weath-er cools and we get some folks that want to ride.
I have had some questions about the awards that we normally give at Spring Fling. Well we did not have a rally this year so they kind of got postponed like everything else so here is what we will be doing for the awards. We are going to take a one year break not because there is nobody that deserves the awards but be-cause with all the things going on this year the paper work was never submitted and the awards were kind of forgotten (I Believe). So as of now I want everyone to start thinking about the awards for next spring fling. What awards you may ask. Well there is the TENNESSEE MEMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD “AUDREY BATSON MEMORIAL AWARD” this award is done by nomination, check out the district web site for the requirements. We also have SHIRLEY BURTON MEMORIAL SPIRIT AWARD this is an award that goes to the chapter that has shown the most spirit in the preceding year, again check out the dis-trict web site for the requirements. Then we have the Tennessee Director of the Year Award, Lanny R. Stewart Memorial again check out the district web site for the requirements. Starting 1 January, 2021 we will begin the news letter of the of the quarter and the news letter of the year awards. (if there is enough interest in them). The rules for these contests will be reviewed by our MEC and posted on the web site soon. There are other contests that we have at some of our events like Winter Event and Spring Fling, these will be posted on the web site under the “Home” button (Contest Rules). Not all are there right now but I am working to get them updated and will have them soon. If there is something you like and don’t see the rules let me know and we can try to fix that problem.
In closing I would like to ask that we all keep in touch with our chapters and our GWRRA friends. Make sure everyone is getting the support they need. Most of all make sure nobody feels forgotten or left behind with all that is going on in this world of ours.

August 2020 District Newsletter Couple of the Year Article
During July, we had several plans for getting around visiting chapters, and some worked and some didn’t. We attended the TN-B monthly chapter gathering on the 7th, and had our usual fun time. They’re back at their normal Shoney’s, in the back room, and it is working out fine.
Then on Saturday, the 18th, we had every intention of doing a marathon visitation, get up real early and go down to TN-Y Murfreesboro to attend their chapter gathering, then on up to TN-S Portland for their gathering, and finally over to TN-W2 Memphis for their gathering, leave after it was over and get part way home on the interstate till it got too late and stop at a motel for the night, and finish the rest of the way home on Sunday. Well, we got a notification that Murfreesboro wasn’t having their gathering, but we thought, what the heck, we could still do the two, then notification that Memphis had to cancel their gathering, so that ended those plans, at least for this month, but we’ll figure a time in the future to do it.
Since our Saturday the 18th plans fell through, we were free, and heard about TN-T, Knoxville set-ting up a picnic ride to Elrod Falls, someplace we’d never been, so we joined them, and though it was a hot day for the riders (up in the lower 90 degrees, not counting the “feels like” temperature), we had a good time (of course, they teased us for cheating, as we were in our truck following their tail gunner – with the air conditioner going. But hey, at least it was still a Honda, that counts, doesn’t it? We did get asked where our protective gear was?
In this upcoming month of August, we will try to get some more chapter gathering visitations in, so hopefully we’ll see some of you soon.
We’re also looking into attending the few rallies that are still planning to be held, right now we’re registered for the MS District Rally the middle of October, and doing the registration form for the VA District Rally the end of October. The only other District rally still, at this time, being planned to be held this year, is the GA District Ride-In the beginning of October, and we have a tentative conflict so it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to make that one.
We’re still asking the Chapter Directors to send us a quick note to let us know whether they have a current Chapter Couple of the Year, and if so, at least their names, so we can get a list, and know who we want to make a special effort to talk with when we visit.

Last month I was optimistic and thinking that things would be getting better and that we
would be starting to get back to normal. It appears we have taken a couple of steps back. It
may be a little longer before we can get anywhere near back to normal. That does not mean
that we do not make plans, we just have to be prepared to adjust, alter or cancel those plans.
As your Chapters make plans for outings, gatherings, rides and get togethers just remember
that your team may have to make last minute adjustments to meet new guidelines and situa-
tions that may arise. Please try to be understanding of changes to plans. We do want to try to
have these events and to make plans even knowing that changes or even cancellations may oc-
cur.
I wish I could tell you that 2021 will be different. I wish I could say that 2021 will be back to
normal. I wish I could tell you a lot of things, but the truth is that I have no idea what 2021
will bring. I can tell you that your District Team, your Chapter Team along with the National
Team are going to be working hard to get things going as soon as possible within the State,
Federal and local guidelines. Will it be like it used to be, no it will not. Will we still follow the
GWRRA motto, Friends for Fun Safety and Knowledge, yes we will. All of these changes
make it rough on your Directors and Team, try to be understanding and supportive as they
work to make plans and activities.

Good morning everyone! We hope you are all doing great. It’s been a while since we have seen
many of you. I know that a few chapters have had limited gatherings lately. We hope you are
being able to get in some riding time.
Charlie and I have decided to postpone teaching CPR/MFA classes for right now until we are
able to give you a complete course. We were told that we could start back holding classes with
new rules and restrictions, but that would also limit the way parts of the class would be present-
ed.
We will let you know when we feel comfortable offering this to you. We know that everyone is a
little more cautious right now about social contact and appreciate your concern. We hope that
everyone is doing well and continues to do so.
We look forward to getting back in the saddle again and teaching Medic First Aid/CPR for your
benefit.

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer!!! Seems like we went from cool wet to dry hot over-night. Hopefully we can get out and do more riding. Restaurants are opening so evening dinner rides and weekend rides to many parks and scenic views are possible. With so many rallies and other events being canceled at this time it is difficult to get togeth-er as Chapter meetings and such. If you have not marked your calendar for the August 15th Multi-Chapter Ride in to The Thomas House Hotel in Red Boiling Springs, TN. Patti Hamilton has set up lunch (12:30 Central Time) and they can accommodate 150 people. If you can attend please RSVP to [email protected] before August 8th as they need to give the chef a total count so they can be ready.
Ride often, have fun, be safe and stay hydrated.

District Educator Message for August 2020
Patti and I hope this month’s article finds everyone well. The Covoid 19 Pandemic seem to be getting worse for
us instead of going away. It sure has thrown a monkey wrench in our training schedule for the year. We do have
a TRC Class set up with Chapter Z in Columbia for October 24. Registration is on the District web page as well
as Groupworks, plus it is included in our District newsletter. We do have some slots open for the class. Contact
me or Charlie Huffman to sign up.
GWRRA has opened up classes for Medic First Aid with about 4 pages of instructions on holding a class. After
speaking with Charlie and Pam our MFA Coordinators we feel it is not feasible to try holding classes at this mo-
ment. We will wait until later in the year.
Patti has put together a District Ride in to the Thomas House Hotel in Red Boiling Springs for August 15. She
contacted the Chef and he has put together a great buffet meal for $15.09 a person and this includes drink and
dessert. The dining room can hold up to a 150 people. Information about this event is on web page and group-
works, plus also in our newsletter.
I am asking Chapter Directors to look into appointing a chapter skills enhancement advisor to their staff. This
person will take the place of the former chapter educator and will work with the District Educator to help the
chapter keep up with their training in the levels program. Contact me for more information or appointment.
We will work to provide more rider courses later in the fall. Hopefully things will be getting back to normal.
Ride safe and be safe

HEAD PROTECTION CHECK
???When was last time you preformed a helmet inspection???
Should be certified by: DOT, SNELL or ECE Should be replaced at least every five (5) years from date of manu-
facture, (which is located on a tag attached to the chin strap or un-derneath the liner), or at any time the helmet is dropped in any kind of incident or accident; or begins to show signs of impact or wear to the retention strap.
Page 14 TN District News
Must be worn, by law, in some States/Provinces Arguably the most important piece of riding gear.
Designed to protect you from such things as skull fracture, concussions,
various cuts and abrasions, and foreign objects penetrating the head.
Also protects from cold and heat, wind and wind noise, and if equipped
with a visor, provides greater visibility in wet weather.
Four major components:
Outer shell: fiberglass or another form of thermoplastic. Absorbs initial im-
pact and disperses it to reduce chance of skull fracture, etc.
Foam liner: high-density foam that crushes on impact, cushioning the
head. This foam loses its protective qualities over time
Comfort liner: made of soft material and provides a comfortable,
snug fit and reduces helmet rotation in the event of an impact
Retention system: made of nylon or leather with a fastening buckle
(usually D- rings or manufacturer equipped quick releases) to hold the hel-
met on the head.

When will this COVID-19 pandemic ever go away??? I don’t know about you, but we are tired of it. We are
tired of the ‘social distancing’, having to wear a mask in public, and not being able to travel freely without hav-
ing to worry about the virus.
However, there are things we can do. We can ride. We just have to be careful when we stop for a break or to
refuel. Of course, restaurants can be a problem. An answer to that is to take a picnic lunch (brown bag it).
Furthering your education is a distinct possibility and there are two ways this can be done:
1. The GWRRA University has extended their online classes for another month (August). They will probably
keep extending these class offerings until this pandemic ceases to be a threat.
8/5/2020 – 103-04 Team Riding To educate & inform members about the benefits of team riding.
8/6/2020 – 201-06 GWRRA Module Newsletters Discusses communication via newsletters and why they
are so important today. It isn’t just the newsletter editor…it is everyone!

8/20/2020 – 101-02 Co-Rider Seminar Information and tips for the co-rider. This seminar is part of the
Levels program This class will be entered into the Rider Ed database when completed.
8/26/2020 – 102-02 GWRRA Module Riding in the Heat All about riding in the heat; what to carry, how to
dress and how to respond to heat related emergencies.
8/27/2020 – 103-02 GWRRA Module Riding in the Rain All about riding in the rain; from suggestions on
what to carry to what to wear, and how your bike/trike handles differently
The specifics:
Preregister online on the University website: gwrradot.com by clicking on the scrolling notice and filling out the
form.
Once registered, you will receive an email confirming your registration.
Check the schedule on the calendar and online for times.
Class sizes will be limited.
A U.3 class roster will be completed and submitted for entry into the database.
You must participate by computer or phone with a camera and microphone. No dial in calls.

2. At long last the GWRRA University powers-to-be have given us permission to schedule and hold our own
online classes within the District. The classes are requested by individual or groups of chapters. When a
chapter has a class they would like to schedule, contact the District University Coordinators (i.e. David &
Karen). We will work with the chapter to find a date and time that is suitable. If the requested class is ap-
propriate for an online situation, the class will be taught by one of our own certified University Instructors.
Don’t pass up the opportunities available to you to further your GWRRA education which follows closely the
“Fun, Safety, and Knowledge” part of the GWRRA motto.
We’ll see you on the road!
