I start this letter with a heavy heart at the loss of a very
special Rotarian. It was such a shock to us all to hear of
President Elect Sam Owori’s sudden death. A man who has
given so much of his life to Rotary
and his community and worked so
hard to fulfil his dream of Making A
Difference. President Ian Riseley
has written to us saying the following:
“Memorial contributions in honour of
Sam will be directed to the Sam F.
Owori Memorial to Polio. This fund
has been established to honour his
commitment to Rotary’s polio
eradication efforts. Sam was a member of both the Africa
Regional PolioPlus Committee and the International
PolioPlus Committee. You can make online contributions to
the fund here. Thank you all for your continued support
during this difficult time.
Sincerely, Ian Riseley
Rotary International President, 2017-18”
POLIO
I urge you to support the Polio eradication
program, as the end is nigh but not quite
there yet and the final stage is always the
most difficult to achieve. With your
support, I know we will make the distance
and then what celebrations when we, as a
community, are able to say, “We have
eradicated Polio!” That is truly Making a
Difference!
CLUB VISITS
My time has been so wonderfully spent; visiting clubs,
meeting the people who make Rotary and are the face of
Rotary, enjoying listening to the happenings of the clubs and
the enormous work that is being done in the Community. It is
so pleasing to hear and I know very much appreciated by the
communities.

Science and Engineering
I have also had the privilege and a great experience in
attending a day at the Science and Engineering day in
Newcastle. Several things impressed me; the student’s
enthusiasm and very healthy competition; the dedication of the
staff and the enormous commitment from the many Rotarians
who organise, help and support this excellent project. The
seriousness of the students in ‘preparing’ the task and then
putting it to the test was just great to see, and the joy on their
faces when it all worked was a treat. Congratulations to Brian
Atkins and his team for a job very well done!
Literacy
I have also been privileged to attend
an award ceremony in Nelson Bay
where Rotary volunteers have been
recognised by the Department of
Education for the work they do with
helping the primary school children
read.
The literacy programs are essential for
the students and so good to be involved with. I encourage all
clubs to be involved with a literacy program as it is vital for the
development of the student. A sincere thank you to all those
volunteers.
Environment
President Ian has encouraged us to get involved with the
Environment and Rotary Down Under has provided a link for
us to see the great work that has been taking place in Zones
7B and 8. I recommend you have a look at it; very interesting.

YOUTH PROGRAMS
Has your Club considered approaching
your local McDonalds Restaurant for
candidates to participate in our many
Rotary youth programs?
With employees ranging in age from 13
to 25 and above, McDonald’s
restaurants are an ideal market for
Rotary Clubs to promote and
encourage involvement in Rotary youth
programs.
If you are interested in this proposal, it
is suggested that initial contact should
be made with the local McDonalds
Restaurant Manager.

CLUB BULLETIN JUDGING
The judging is based on the most improved
bulletin over the year.
Not the best or fancy bulletin all year.
Clubs are reminded that privacy laws apply
to press releases, photographs, leaflets,
brochures and display materials.
Clubs should always obtain permission,
preferably in writing, from anyone whose
name or photograph is to be included in
any published document or promotional
display material.
Clubs absolutely must obtain the written
permission of parents or legal guardians
(not school teachers) for the publication of
the name or photograph or any child or
minor.
The Bulletin
The easiest and the best time saving
method is to have a template, which you
save then update each week, filling in the
empty sections.
You can select templates in Microsoft Word
and Publisher. (Sorry I can’t help with
Apple).
Click on file, top left corner, click on New, in
the search for templates, type in
Newsletters.
Pick one you like.
The Club Bulletin should:
On the front page:
• Your club Name
• Meeting time and place
• Include the website address of your
club (If you have one)
• Include the district website
• Your club Facebook page and all other
media outlets include the Rotary
emblem and the annual theme logo
• District Governor and RI President
• Club contact details, President and
secretary.
All this can be done in a very compact way,
not to take up too much space.
More next month ....
