Reviewing Data

• Review the composite data from within your leadership team:

• Customers would include parents, students, board members, or community members.

• Workforce would include certified and classified employees. • Administration would include all administrators or management at school

Session One

Are we leading with the right stuff?

There is a Leadership System in place rather than a single leader within the organization.

The Leadership System use processes that are published and used by every leader with the same fidelity across the entire organization.

The leaders communicate to the workforce what the current and possible future needs of customers and products and services are aligned to meet these needs.

Alignment and Integration

A Leadership System that is aligned will have multiple layers of leaders responsible for implementing the mission, core values and improvement strategies with a single focused message and actions. The Leadership System fits the pieces together for a whole picture.

Examining Your School Leadership• Meet with four people that have examined the same process.

• Table Share each person’s design of the selected process and find similarities and differences.• What are some of your conclusions based on your discussion?

• Whole group share• What do each of the charts suggest to you?

• Save the diagrams for notes and future comparisons.

Session Two

Are you walking your talk?

The Leadership System has a created a mission, vision that drives the decisions of every area in the organization.

The Leadership System actively identifies and communicates visionary strategic goals, initiatives, and measurements to the workforce and customers.

Each leader engages succession planning with employees and training is provided to employees to ensure the organization is sustained.

Alignment to Mission, Vision and Core Values

• A key function of the Leadership System is to ensure the organizational mission, vision, and core values are clearly understood by all employees.

• Leadership decisions are aligned to the mission, vision, and core values of the organization.

• The activity of unwrapping is to assist every one in making the improvement tools of mission, vision, and core values concrete rather that just catchy sayings that are not connected to work and decisions.

Session Three

Be Accountable

The Leadership System actively identifies and supports key communities and demonstrates commitment to societal responsibilities with the key communities in a public manner so all are aware and understand the communities and responsibilities.

The District leaders’ personal actions reflect their commitment to core values and uphold legal and ethical behavior within the entire organization.

The Leadership System holds high expectations for all and has an accountability system for others to evaluate leaders.

The organization is involved in community issues and engages employees in making the community better.

Trio Dialogue

• In groups of three discuss the following prompts:• Describe your how your Leadership System holds itself accountable.

• Describe how leadership examines results of the strategic improvement strategies and examines results of leadership evaluations.

• Describe how often the leadership monitors data for adjustments during the year.

Accountability Checklist Data Walk

• The purpose of this activity is to examine the steps the leadership should set up for accountability and social responsibility.

• Use the Improvement Checklist to develop your own district improvement ‘To Do’ list.• Complete individually and then compare answers in a group of

three.• Develop one Improvement Checklist for the trio group then put

each checklist on a separate table for each trio group to Data Walk.

• When your group comes back to your own completed checklist, discuss what you saw on other check lists and then discuss findings with the whole group.

Session Four

Putting It All Together

The Leadership System monitors measurements and results of goals in short cycle increments and reports at least quarterly on progress.

The results of internal and external audits are reviewed with employees and used for workforce input on how to improve.

District Scenario• Read the short district scenario about leadership and

organizational improvement. • Determine the key factors related to leadership that made

this organization struggle with improvement.• In groups of three, discuss your findings and discuss

implications for your organization.• Share and record the implications.

Important Thinking• In a well-defined and deployed improvement plan, the

Leadership System provides the direction for the entire organization.

• The improvement tools of a mission, vision, and core values should be used to guide decisions and keep every area in the organization focused.

• Every Leadership System should make sure all senior leaders and management understand the mission, vision , and core values and use them to decisions.

• Effective Leadership Systems create the environment for continuous improvement through expectations, communication, and training.

complete a draft. • If you have a draft OP, review it to help with process

mapping.• Review data from the Leadership System after giving it to

multiple stakeholders groups.• Ensure mission, vision, and core values are used as
