Growth Mindset at St. Davids
Over 30 years ago, Carol Dweck and
her colleagues investigated students' at-
titudes about making mistakes and fail-
ure. They noticed that some students re-
bounded while other students seemed
devastated by even the smallest set-
backs. After studying the behaviour of
thousands of children, Dr. Dweck
coined the terms fixed mindset and
growth mindset to describe the beliefs
people have about learning and intelli-
gence. When students believe they
can get smarter, they understand that ef-
fort makes them stronger. Therefore
they put in extra time and effort, and
that leads to higher achievement.
Often students, or anyone for that matter, are at risk of confirming a negative belief or
stereotype about themselves. Let’s work together at dispelling negative beliefs and
strengthening our collective growth mindset!
At St Davids, we believe that each child can grow his or her brain, develop new learn-
ing pathways and achieve to high levels. Making mistakes is a natural part of learning,
is valuable and helps learning to stick… as long as everyone views them as part of the
growth process. We’ll be engaging students in growth mindset activities that will help
them understand how their brains grow and how to respond to learning challenges
with confidence.
Welcome to Mrs. Janny who is a .5 long term occasional teacher covering Mrs. Ko-
tsanis’ class every other afternoon.

GRADE 8 STUDENTS AND PARENTS
SAVE THE DATE
Starting high school is a huge step in a student's life.
While it's definitely an exciting time, it also brings with it
many questions, such as "What's life in high school really
like? What programs and options are available to help me
achieve my goals?"
A great way to have your questions answered is to attend
an open house. Grade 8 students and their families are
invited to attend High School Open Houses from Novem-
ber 27-30.
Details about open houses will be shared with parents/
guardians mid-October.

The Elementary Progress Report On November 9th, your child will bring home their Elementary Progress Report. The format
was created after years of consultation with parents, teachers, principals, and students across
the province. Although it looks much like the Report Card, this report has a very different in-
tent.
The purpose of the Progress Report is to share early and specific feedback on your child's de-
velopment of work habits and learning skills as well as his/her progress towards achieving the
curriculum standards by the end of the school year.
Traditionally, when reporting to parents about their child’s progress, teachers
have prepared by looking back over the work done. The teacher evaluated
your child’s progress from the beginning of the school term to the current
point in time, and reported on the highlights of achievement as they compare to
overall curricular expectations. Teachers continue to report on Provincial
Term One and Term Two Report Cards in this manner.
Reporting on the Progress Report is about looking forward. The purpose is to set
the course for the learning journey ahead. Based on the evidence teachers see, as
well as what teachers know about learning at this grade level, the report communicates the path
your child is on towards achieving the grade level expectations by the end of the year. For stu-
dents who are on a modified Individual Education Program, the teacher uses those modified
goals when determining whether a child is progressing well, progressing very well, or progress-
ing with difficulty.
All subjects that are part of your child’s program in the first weeks of school will be assessed
according to the following indicators:
Progressing Very Well: In the fir st weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is
demonstrating consistent progress and is on track to meet and/or surpass the provincial stand-
ard set for the end of the year.
Progressing Well: In the fir st weeks of school, evidence shows that the student is demon-
strating consistent progress and is on track to meet the provincial standard set for the end of the
year.
Progressing With Difficulty: In the fir st weeks of school, evidence shows that the student
is experiencing difficulty towards meeting the provincial standard set for the end of the year.
For subjects in which your child is Progressing With Difficulty, the teacher will discuss specif-
ic next steps plans needed for success. We look forward to partnering with you and your child
for a year of great learning and growth.

WHAT WE DAY MEANT TO ME! We day was absolutely insane!
This year I got to learn so much more information on how to be a community/global change maker. I was taught once again this year on how we can make an impact in our community/
world as a leader. I got to listen to some famous and nonfamous people who have made a HUGE difference with their school and world and helped the people around them and have left a mark on the people and areas they helped serve. I really understood the girl who got bullied
in her school; when she shared her story on how our voices are extremely powerful. I think this year at school that WE should use our voices more to connect with the people around us to make a difference because after all, we are GENWE.
Overall, WE day was absolutely AMAZING!! I got the privilege to be two rows away from the stage!, and got to be close up to the speakers
and performances that went on. For real though, I TOUCHED KELLY CLARKSON'S HAND! (Real fangirl moment I had). And Me to We had again put on a fabulous show this year! (Thanks Mr.C for putting up with me again:)
Hopefully I’ll have the courage to use my voice and make a difference this year! Zoe A.
Thursday September 28th, was We Day in Toronto Ontario. 9 students from St.Davids were chosen to attend this life changing event. We Day is about so many things like helping coun-tries that need money for education or food. WE does fundraisers like We bake, to help pay for
the things that those countries might need. WE also recognizes residential schools and how kids were forced to leave their families and go to these schools and start a new life. I learned a
lot this We Day and saw so many awesome people there and lots of cool performances, includ-ing, Vanessa Hudgens, Superwoman, Kelly Clarkson, and even Prince Harry! We Day was such a great experience, especially to go with all my friends. We Day is held in the air canada center
and this year the show was sold out! That's amazing to know that so many people want to help in our world, and that's exactly what Mark and Craig Kielburger wanted to do since they were
kids! That's why 10 years ago they started this organization, WE. In the end We is an amazing thing to be part of and I hope next year and the years to come we have more and more people trying to make the world a better place to live in. Isabella Recine
