NINJAS TAKE THE BEACH

8

On the morning of May 31, 2014 ninjas from Polytechnic,

Mayfair, Bellflower, Gahr, and Millikan headed out to Bolsa

Chica for the monthly Bolsa Chica Wetlands beach clean up.

Once we arrived we were given the task to take out invasive

species that were putting the other plants at risk. We spent

about 2 hours at the site getting to know our fellow ninjas

whilst saving the plants at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy.

After the clean up, Polytechnic high school hosted a bonfire

so that the division could socialize more. To keep the fun go-

ing, we played several ice breakers like human knot, BANG!,

etc. We also spent the day in the water, building sandcastles,

and playing volleyball.

Overall the event helped bring the division closer together

whilst serving our community.

Installation/Awards Banquet

On May 18th, the Bellflower Key Clubs of Division 13 south celebrated the amazing 2013-

2014 term with a banquet. We began the night by eating and socializing with our fellow ninjas,

because after that night we wouldn’t be able to see most of them. After stuffing ourselves with

the great amount of food, our Kiwanis advisor, Mr. Howard began the award ceremony.

Saint Joseph’s first year with a Key Club was a success. With much warmth and encouragement from

our fellow D13S Ninjas and the rest of CNH, our board and our members felt confident venturing

into this new adventure that is Key Club.

May 18th was when our Key Club Awards Banquet took place in Bellflower Kiwanis Hall. Although

we formed our club around this time one year ago and were able to attend last year’s banquet, our

club was doubly excited for the banquet this year because it followed our first-ever Key Club term in

which we actively participated. Throughout the year we were able to recruit an impressive number of

members (over 200, which is about one-fourth of our school!), complete amazing service projects, and

participate in several other key club events.

When the time came for giving out awards, we were so pleasantly surprised being awarded with Ser-

vice Project of the Year with our book drive, in which our club donated over 200 books to a deserv-

ing elementary school. Our president, Kellie Simbulan, also received a special recognition award with-

in Division 13 South, for taking the initiative since she was the one who started the Saint Joseph Key

Club. Crystal Ryan, our secretary, was recognized as Member of the Year for her excellent work as an

organized and responsible board member as well as her active participation in numerous Key Club

events.

We are so happy to now be a part of the Key Club family, and we are grateful especially for our fellow

key clubbers with whom we have grown closer to. Key Club was amazing this year because of our

large family of members, and we even received a club award for having so many join our club! We are

all looking forward to a great year of service, following with many more years to come!

BELLFLOWER — BLOOD DRIVE

The annual blood drive hosted at Bellflower High sponsored by the

American Red Cross took place on May 29th this year.

Every year this event attracts many people eager to sign up and do-

nate to a good cause. By donating a pint of blood, one person can

save another individual’s life, and with each contribution we can

make a real difference. Each donation is another step towards our

goodwill towards humanity.

This year we had a number of 99 donors, just one less from a good

hundred. Our original goal as a club was to gather as many sign-ups

and at least reach a total of 120 donors.

Although we did not meet that amount, we hopefully will next year

and perhaps even surpass it. A number is just a number; it’s the thought that counts.

A major factor to the number of donors this year may be the fact that the majority of

those that would like to are not yet of age and some do not meet the requirements.

However these enthusiastic young people give hope for a promising turnout for next

year.

MAYFAIR — CLUBS DAY

Four times a year, Mayfair High School gives the clubs on campus

an opportunity to fundraise for their clubs by selling food. May-

fair’s Key Club is famous on campus for selling their orange chick-

en with fried rice or chow mein. Each time clubs day rolls around

we sell out and raise tons of money that helps support our club.

This clubs day was no different. We sold out in both lunch peri-

ods, middle school and high school thus raising us money to put

back into our account after DCON.

To also show our spirit for Key Club, we put up a poster saying

“Ask us how we feel!” and cheered our hearts out every time we

were asked.

On Friday, June 6, 2014, Mayfair Key Club teamed up with Frostbites for a

fundraiser to support our club. Frostbites is a franchise that is known for their

combination of Italian ice and frozen custard. They have dozens of flavors,

which allows customers to mix-and-match and invent their own creations of sor-

bet Italian ice and frozen custard.

When Frostbites visited Mayfair High School, a few of their staff members, as

well as the Key Club officers, helped serve an endless line of students after

school. There were about six choices of Italian ice to go with Vanilla frozen cus-

tard. Mayfair students and faculty showed great support for our Key Club by

providing many customers throughout our time selling.

Since this fundraiser was so recent, our final profit is not yet clear; however, it is

estimated that our club earned about $50 - $60 in less than two hours! We defi-

nitely had tons of fun selling (and buying) these tasty snacks. Hopefully we’ll

work with Frostbites again soon.

PING PONG TOURNAMENT

In the midst of the whirlwind of end of the year activities, the St. John

Bosco High School Key Club was able to plan and organize a few events

during the month of May for both the end of the year and the summer.

On Friday May 30th, our club hosted a ping pong tournament in the

SJB Oratory. The Oratory is Bosco’s own relaxing game room, com-

plete with ping pong and pool tables, a snack bar, comfortable couches,

and TVs. The tournament was conceptualized and organized by SJB’s

Key Club president, Anthony Guzman. Anthony is an avid ping pong

enthusiast himself, and thought a tournament would be a perfect way

to put the “fun” in fundraising.

The tournament consisted of 11 players, with a $50 cash prize for

the winner. The rest of the profits went back to the club, to help with

later projects. Although the tournament was small, we hope that later

tournaments will continually grow and succeed. Starting next school

year, our club will publicize more tournaments, changing the cause each

time.
