Japanese Butterfly Garden Shawlette By Pam Jemelian

Welcome spring with this brightly colored crescent-shaped shawlette that features 3 large lace butterflies in the

center panel, and a scalloped “cocoon” border. It is a top-down shawl that is knit in 3 increasing wedges, and

the border is crocheted on afterwards. This wrap is a one-size-fits-all pattern and would be appropriate for an

adult, or an older child or teen. It is made with 2 skeins (237 yards each) of Cascade Yarn’s Sunseeker Multis

in their new “Cherry Blossom” Color 124, which is a DK weight cotton blend of 47% cotton/48% acrylic/5%

metallic. The yarn has tiny glints of gold metal which sparkle when they catch the sunlight.

Cast on 9 stitches ideally with the Garter Stitch Tab Method since this method makes a seamless transi-tion in the border stitches between the 3 wedges along the top of the shawl, but an ordinary cast on of 9 stitches is also acceptable. Bind off all sts with an elastic, or stretchy bind off, turn, but do not break yarn since you will now be

crocheting the border.

Ch 1, then single crochet across the wrong side of the shawlette by picking up 2 loops of each bound off

stitch, turn. You will now have 252 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 3, skip 1 st, *2 dc in next st, ch2, 2 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 3 sts; rep from *, end last rep with

skip 1 st instead of the usual 3 sts skipped, then 2 dc in next st, ch2, 2 dc in next st, dc in last st.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 3, *work 7 dc in ch-2 space, 1 sc in ch-1 space; rep from *, end sl st in top of previous row’s

turning chain. Fasten off.
