The time of Queen Victoria’s reign in the 19th

century is called Victorian Era. During this period Britain became an empire – the empire on which

the sun never sets, as they called it. But it was also the time of really huge social differences between the rich and the poor.

1. Why did they say that it was the empire on which the sun never set? Because it stretched across the whole globe, so there was always

daytime in some places of the Empire, even if it was night in England.

2. Name at least seven countries which are now independent and which used to be parts of this empire in the past. India, Canada, Ireland,

Egypt, Cyprus, Malta, Australia, New Zealand, Kenia, the Bahamas and many others.

3. Which country was considered the jewel in the crown of the British Empire? India

The 20th

century meant British participation in two world wars and the end of the Empire. It also saw three dynasties on the British throne.

In the USA, the 19th century was mainly the Civil War, the Gold Rush and pushing the Frontier to the West.

13. One of them made the other surrender, thus almost finishing the war. Which battle was it and

who made whom surrender? Grant made Lee surrender during the Appomattox battle in 1865.

14. The American Declaration of Independence, which makes all Americans very proud, states among others that “all men are created

equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the

century showed that “all” didn’t really mean all. Who were the people whose rights to be

In the 20th century the USA became the world power, trying to be the world’s leader in all aspects of life.

17. The most interesting stages of this race happened in the 1960s. The first stage was won by the Russians and the second by the

A very cruel practice was happening in Australia in the 20th century. Children were taken from their Aborigines parents and placed in orphanages or adopted by white families.

New Zealand supported Britian in both world wars, fighting along British soldiers.

At the end of the 18th century the crew of one British ship revolted against their captain. They put him, and a couple of his loyal officers, into a small boat and took over the ship. It took them long weeks of roaming the ocean in search of a perfect place to live to find an island on which they could hope no one would find them. Otherwise they would be punished by death. Eventually, they found such an island where they settled for good along with their wives they took from Tahiti. Their descendants live there until today.
