5 Themes of Geography to understand Mississippi’s Natural Environment

1. Location- every feature has a “spot”*What is the location of Mississippi? There are many!!

2. Place- physical (climate, water resources, landforms) and human characteristics (languages, religions)* What are some physical and human characteristics of MS?

3. Human-Environmental Interaction- yes it is what it says!* How do we as Mississippians interact with our environment?

4. Movement- Ways we are linked with regions, cultures, people…* What feature of MS could help us to study movement?

5. Regions- Can have a single characteristic or a number of criteria* Can you name any of Mississippi’s regions?

Location of Mississippi• Location can be either relative or absolute• Relative location- a place compared to other

places– Mississippi is bordered by?– Mississippi is bounded by?

• Absolute location- precise location on Earth, use latitude, longitude, and GPS. – What is the absolute location of Mississippi?

Mississippi’s Natural EnvironmentClimate

•Humid Subtropical: Humid through most of the year and we see quite a lot of rain– This climate affects a number of things• People’s movement- Snow birds coming south

for year round activities (golf, fishing, the beach)• Warmer climate also affected the growth of

cotton and turned MS into an important cotton producing state

Mississippi’s Natural EnvironmentTemperature

•Average is 62 •Lowest temp. recorded in 1966: -19 •Highest temp. recorded in 1930: 115•January is the coldest month

Precipitation•Average is 52 inches a year•Coastal counties receive more•Most rainfall occurs in the winter•Humidity- 76% on the coast, 70% northern counties

Mississippi’s Natural Environment

Natural Hazards•Due to frequent weather changes– Tornadoes: spring and early summer (when warm

air from south meets cool air from the north)• Over the past 50 years-MS averages 24 a year

– Hurricanes: June to October• Two most powerful hurricanes in MS

– Camille in 1969– Katrina in 2005

– Much of it is navigable (boats)

• Nine Major River Systems: – Drain into the MS River
