I LEGAL BASES AND GENERAL CONDITIONS

1. This European Technical Approval is issued by the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment in accordance with:

Council Directive 89/106/EEC of 21 December 1988 on the approximation of laws, regulations and administrative provisions of Member States relating to construction products1, modified by the Council Directive 93/68/EEC of 22 July 19932;

Décret n° 92-647 du 8 juillet 19923 concernant l’aptitude à l’usage des produits de construction;

Common Procedural Rules for Requesting, Preparing and the Granting of European Technical Approvals set out in the Annex of Commission Decision 94/23/EC4;

Guideline for European Technical Approval of « Light composite wood-based beams and columns » ETAG 011, edition January 2002,

2. The Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment is authorised to check whether the provisions of this European Technical Approval are met. Checking may take place in the manufacturing plant (for example concerning the fulfilment of assumptions made in this European Technical Approval with regard to manufacturing). Nevertheless, the responsibility for the conformity of the products with the European Technical Approval and for their fitness for the intended use remains with the holder of the European Technical Approval.

3. This European Technical Approval is not to be transferred to manufacturers or agents of manufacturer other than those indicated on page 1; or manufacturing plants other than those indicated on page 1 of this European Technical Approval.

4. This European Technical Approval may be withdrawn by the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment pursuant to Article 5 (1) of the Council Directive 89/106/EEC.

5. Reproduction of this European Technical Approval including transmission by electronic means shall be in full. However, partial reproduction can be made with the written consent of the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment. In this case partial reproduction has to be designated as such. Texts and drawings of advertising brochures shall not contradict or misuse the European Technical Approval.

6. The European Technical Approval is issued by the approval body in its official language. This version corresponds to the version circulated within EOTA. Translations into other languages have to be designated as such.

II SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF THE EUROPEAN TECHNICAL APPROVAL

1 Definition of product and intended use

1.1. Definition of product

The OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists are wood-based composite joists with top and bottom flanges made of solid or finger jointed sawn lumber and web members made of solid sawn lumber with a proprietary grade that meet visual and mechanical requirements listed in the Quality control manual. The top and bottom flanges are connected by a series of diagonal web members, finger joined into the flanges and glued with a resorcinol adhesive type I for structural purpose according to EN 301. The OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE are manufactured with different depths as listed in the relevant Annexes of the present European Technical Approval. The diagonal web members dimensions and arrangement depends on the total length of each joist. One end of the joists is closed by a vertical web member made of solid sawn lumber or glued lumber and the other end by a trimmable OSB part.

1.2. Intended use

The OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists are intended to be used as load-bearing parts of building constructions. With regard to moisture behaviour of the product and type of glue, the use is possible in service classes 1 and 2 defined in Eurocode 5. The open web joists are not intended to be used in areas where they might support seismic actions.

The provisions made in this European Technical Approval are based on an assumed intended working life of the joists of 50 years. The indications given on the working life cannot be interpreted as a guarantee given by the producer, but are to be regarded only as a means for choosing the right products in relation to the expected economically reasonable working life of the works.

2 Characteristics of product and methods of verification

The OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists in the range covered by this ETA corresponds to the drawings and provisions given in Annex 1. The characteristic material values, dimensions and tolerances of the joists not indicated in Annex 3 shall correspond to the respective values laid down in the technical documentation5 of this European Technical Approval. The mechanical properties of the standard Joists are given in Annexes 3.

Each OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE is marked with the product name (OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE) in capital letters.

2.1. ER 1 Mechanical resistance and stability

The mechanical properties of the standard joists sections are given in Annexes 3. They have been determined on the basis of design assisted by testing except for the characteristic bearing capacity which is calculated according to EN 1995-1-1 . No performance is determined (NPD) towards seismic action.

2.2. ER 2 Safety in case of fire

2.3. ER 3 Hygiene, health and environment

Based on the declaration of the manufacturer, the joists do not contain harmful or dangerous substances as defined in the EU database, with exception of formaldehyde and isocyanate.

In addition to the specific clauses relating to dangerous substances contained in this European Technical Approval, there may be other requirements applicable to the products falling within its scope (e.g. transposed European legislation and national laws, regulations and administrative provisions). In order to meet the provisions of the EU Construction Product Directive, these requirements need also to be complied with, when and where they apply.

2.6. ER 6 Energy economy and heat retention

The thermal conductivity for the web and flange material is 0,13 W/(m.K) according to EN 12524. The natural density variation of the materials is taken into account in this value.

2.7. Aspects of durability, serviceability and identification

The adhesive is of type I which allows use in service classes 1 and 2. Serviceability of OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists is understood as their ability to resist loads without unacceptable deformations.

3 Evaluation of Conformity and CE marking

3.1. Attestation of conformity system

The system of attestation of conformity 2 (i) (referred to as system 1) according to Council Directive 89/106/EEC Annex III laid down by the European Commission provides:

a) tasks for the manufacturer:

1. factory production control, 2. further testing of samples taken at the factory by the manufacturer in accordance

with a prescribed test plan.

b) tasks for the approved body:

3. initial type-testing of the product, 4. initial inspection of factory and of factory production control, 5. continuous surveillance, assessment and approval of factory production control.

3.2. Responsibilities

3.2.1. Tasks of the manufacturer, factory production control

The manufacturer has a factory production control system in the plant and exercises permanent internal control of production. All the elements, requirements and provisions adopted by the manufacturer are documented in a systematic manner in the form of written policies and procedures. This production control system ensures that the product is in conformity with the European Technical Approval.

The manufacturer shall only use raw materials supplied with the relevant inspection documents as laid down in the prescribed test plan6. The incoming components shall be subject to controls and tests by the manufacturer before acceptance.

The manufactured components of the OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE shall be subjected to the following tests:

Dimensions of component parts: web (depth and thickness); flange (depth and width); connection (geometry and proper assembly between webs and flange);

Material properties: web and flange with a proprietary grade that meet visual and mechanical requirements listed in the Quality control manual. (cf table 2 annex 3)

Moisture content of web and flange before gluing process. The frequency of controls and tests conducted during production and on the assembled joist is laid down in the prescribed test plan. Exhaustive full-scale proof-load bending tests of the OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE are part of the Factory Production Control on the final product. Web to flange finger jointing is submitted to periodic control by testing. The results of factory production control are recorded and evaluated. The records include at least the following information:

designation of the product, basic material and components;

type of control or testing;

date of manufacture of the product and date of testing of the product or basic material and components;

result of control and testing and, if appropriate, comparison with requirements;

signature of person responsible for factory production control.

The records shall be presented to the inspection body during the continuous surveillance. On request, they shall be presented to the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment.

Details of the extent, nature and frequency of testing and controls to be performed within the factory production control shall correspond to the prescribed test plan which is part of the technical documentation of this European Technical Approval.

only made available to the approved bodies involved in the conformity attestation procedure.

3.2.2. Tasks of notified bodies

3.2.2.1. Initial type-testing of the product

Regarding Initial Type Testing of the OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE, the results of tests carried out in the frame of Europan Technical Approval Evaluation may be used unless changes occurred either in the production line or in the manufacturing unit . In this case, the necessary initial type testing has to be agreed between the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB) and the approved notified bodies involved.

3.2.2.2. Initial inspection of factory and of factory production control

The notified body shall ascertain that, in accordance with the prescribed test plan, the factory and the factory production control are suitable to ensure continuous and orderly manufacturing of the joists according to the provisions mentioned in the ETA Guideline as well as in the present ETA.

3.2.2.3. Continuous surveillance

The notified body shall visit the factory at least twice a year for regular inspection. It has to be verified that the factory production control and the specified manufacturing process are performed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s quality manual, including test of samples according to the prescribed test plan.

The results of product certification and continuous surveillance shall be made available on demand by the certification body or inspection body, respectively, to the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment. In cases where the provisions of the European Technical Approval and the prescribed test plan are no longer fulfilled the conformity certificate shall be withdrawn.

3.3. CE-Marking

The CE marking shall be affixed on each OPENJOIST TRIFORCE joists. The CE-marking shall be accompanied by the following information:

identification number of the certification body;

name or identifying mark of the producer and manufacturing plant;

the last two digits of the year in which the CE-marking was affixed;

number of the EC certificate of conformity;

number of the European Technical Approval;

product name according to Annexes 3 for the specification of the mechanical properties according to Annexes 3 of this ETA.

4 Assumptions under which the fitness of the product for the intended use was favourably assessed

4.1. Manufacturing

OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE are manufactured in the factory in accordance with the provisions of the European Technical Approval as identified during inspection of the plant by the Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment and the notified body. Gluing of flanges to web and of flange finger joints is performed according to specific provisions based on relevant standards for structural gluing of wood material.

4.2. Installation

OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists shall be installed on the basis of a specific structural design for each installation, using the load-bearing capacities given in Annex 3 of this ETA.

Actions at joists supports shall not exceed the bearing resistance given in Annex 3. The characteristic resistance is specified taking into account 38 mm as minimum bearing length. In the case of a larger bearing length, the characteristic resistance may be calculated according to EN 1995-1-1.

The Joists shall be installed by appropriately qualified personnel, following an installation plan and relevant construction details worked out for each individual building project. The installation plan shall be based on the manufacturers general guide and provisions for installing OPEN JOIST TRIFORCE joists.

4.3. Responsibility of the manufacturer

It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the information on the specific conditions according to 1 and 2 including Annexes is given to those who are concerned. This information may be made by reproduction of the respective parts of the European Technical Approval. In addition all installation data shall be shown clearly on the package and/or on an enclosed instruction sheet, preferably using illustration(s).

The minimum data required are:

minimum bearing length at the support,

information about the way the joists should be lifted and stored,

information about conditions of storage

identification of the manufacturing batch.

All data shall be presented in a clear and explicit form.

5 Recommendations

5.1. Recommendations on packaging, transport and storage

The joists shall be protected against harmful wetting during transport and storage.

The joists must not be lifted or stored in such a way that bending around the weak axis may cause damage to the joists.

The manufacturer shall ensure that the information of these provisions is given to those concerned.

5.2. Recommendations on use

Before the installation, it shall be controlled that the joists are not damaged during transport or storage. Damage joists shall be replaced.

Notches are not allowed in the joists, neither in flanges nor in the web.

The manufacturer shall ensure that the information of these provisions is given to those concerned.
