What is pulmonary hypertension (PH) ? The heart is a complex organ composed of multiple cardiac chambers and vessels. The heart works in close proximity with multiple organs including the lungs. Briefly, the right side of the heart is responsible for delivering blood without oxygen back to the lungs. This is possible because of a great vessel called pulmonary artery. PH is a lung pathology where there is increased pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs. This pressure increase can directly impact the right heart as the right heart will need to pump with greater force to eject blood forward. As a consequence, the right heart enlarges and its muscle becomes thicker and wasted. As the disease worsens and the right heart becomes more overwhelmed, fluid build-up in cavities such as the abdomen (right-sided heart failure) can occur. Pulmonary hypertension may be a primary or secondary condition, meaning that it may occur as a result of some underlying disease including heartworm disease, chronic inflammatory airway/lung disease, blood clots, left-sided heart failure or congenital abnormalities of the blood vessels of the lungs, or occur for no identifiable reason (idiopathic pulmonary hypertension). 1 DOGS AND CATS Pulmonary Hypertension Client Information Sheet Cardiologists Dr. Jean- Sebastien Boileau Dr. Catherine Belanger Need more information? How is PH diagnosed? The gold standard for the diagnosis of PH is cardiac catheterization under anesthesia. Because this is not feasible for obvious reasons, the clinical diagnosis is based on the finding made by echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart). Other diagnostic tests performed during the visit: ________________________________________________________________________________________.

Affected animals can be:

2

PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

TREATMENT OPTIONS Treatment for PH involves medications that dilate vessels in the lungs, or treatment of any underlying disease, or both. The response to treatment will greatly depend on the cause of PH.

MILD Not experiencing any

symptoms

RESPIRATORY SIGNS Respiratory signs such as coughing, increased

respiratory rate and even collapse

HEART FAILURE Lethargy, collapse,

decreased appetite, episodes of rapid/laboured breathing
