DIRECTOR’S MENSAGEMore than a simple document, this publication is a form of the institution open its doorsnot only for its employees, faculty and students, but for the whole community.

Investment in quality education with constant training of staff and faculty, was one of thegreat achievements of our group, along with the encouragement of social activities,whether in teaching, research or extension. Part of the effort was also focused on theinclusion of people into society.

In this publication are described projects and programs that took place in the years 2008and 2009. Our group aims with this Social Report to strengthen a commitment to society,in which it compromised to be constantly re-evaluating their actions, always guided on theformation of citizens prepared for the market and especially aware of their role in society.

Its purpose is to enhance the knowledge and skills of students who havestudied up to 6th semester, by attending to patients in Fanor’sPhysiotherapy Clinic and under the supervision of professor andcoordinator of the clinic. Students were encouraged to participate withextra-curricular hours.

Agreement between the Fanor and IBMES to participate in the National HigherEducation Social Responsible Day, where students of law provide assistance to poorcommunities of several neighborhoods in the city of Fortaleza and nearby cities.

This project’s goal is to improve the functional capacity of patients withcardiovascular diseases such as Hypertension, Post-Operative and Post AcuteMyocardial Infarction.

This project looks to provide physical therapy to elderly patients from a poor rest homein Fortaleza (Lar Torres de Melo). Patients are subjected to the evaluations ofrespiratory dysfunctions and are trained in their daily life activities.

ACUPUNCTURE PROJECT

It’s goal is to provide guidance to pregnant women about the care before, duringand after birth, the baby care and the importance of breastfeeding in the first sixmonths of life. It is developed in poor communities in the vicinity of Fanor’s mainCampus and at its’ Physiotherapy Clinic.

The project looks to meet individuals from poor communities and guide them in theprevention and treatment of musculoskeletal complications through manual therapytechniques and resources of Oriental medicine, developing students’ skills.

Project that offers free physical evaluations and activities plus sports to thewhole community and all age groups.

Agreement between the Fanor in partnership with the Department of Justice of theState of Ceará, the Prison Ministry and the Public Attorneys of the State, where thestudents of law Fanor receive processes of condemned prisoners and sentence andstreamline the legal measures to improve the conditions of the sentence, including therelease the prisoner in case it is possible.

FANOR / RUY BARBOSA / CHAMBERLAIN

Students and teachers of the following sisters schools Fanor, Ruy Barbosa andChamberlain (USA) joined in a social project that took place in Fortaleza andMadalena (Ceará). The objective was to promote the experience in public healththrough the Brazilian National Health System (SUS) in rural areas, generate theexperience exchange and discussion of the inclusion of nursing in the communitywith a focus on Primary Care and Family Health Strategy.

The project also promoted the interaction of Fanor`s Nursing students and of RuyBarbosa`s Psychology students with students from Chamberlain College ofNursing, to discuss the American and the Brazilian Health System and the study ofEnglish Language.

Chamberlain College of Nursing, Fanor and Ruy Barbosa are educationalinstitutions operated by DeVry Inc.

Agreement between the Fanor and the Center for Defense of Women in the city ofFortaleza, for legal services to victims of domestic violence.

ÁREA1 and Fanor scheduled a morning of activities to commemorate the SociallyResponsible Day where participants learned the principles of physics, they had resumeworkshops, where they offered tips to fix, and update resumes, Computer Basics, freelegal advice at NPJ and Fanor’s Physiotherapy Clinic and various cultural activities.

AT VERACEL CELULOSE

CITIZEN PROJECT

Within the area of operation of Veracel, students traverse 400 km technical visits.Participated in activities at the industry, at the company’s forests and, above all, inthe Veracruz Station, the largest private reserve of the Natural Heritage in theBrazilian Rain Forest.

ÁREA1 Engineering School released a computer lab for members of the YouthCitizenship Project, focused at young people aged between 16 and 24, with a lowincome, through the development of activities in Citizenship and Human Rights,professional training and the provision of voluntary civil service to the community. Thestudents are trained to a professional initiation and achieve better opportunities to jointhe market, contributing to decrease the youth unemployment in Bahia.

I SIX SIGMA

WEEK ÁREA1 PROJECT

TECHNICAL DAY PROJECT

During the II Environment Week were performed a total of 51 events and alsotook place the 3rd Forum for the Integration of Students of EnvironmentalEngineering. At the Forum were discussed news and market performance of theEnvironmental Engineer.

Engineering and technology are present in ÁREA1 not only through lectures or marketexperiences, but also through various other forms of learning such as the Bahia’s I SixSigma Technical Day, Lean-Six Sigma methodology, a set of practices to systematicallyimprove processes and eliminate the deficiencies. ÁREA1 Engineering School alsoprovided support regarding social responsibility: all participants of the event donated acan of powdered milk that at the end of the event, was donated to GACC - SupportGroup for Children with Cancer.

PEA - ENVIRONMENTALEDUCATION PROJECT

PEA is a partnership between ÁREA1 with the engineering company Odebrechtand the Electricity Company of Bahia (COELBA) and involves a multidisciplinarystrategy developed by these companies with the objective of Preservation andEnvironmental Education at a Rain Forest point, located Salvador. PEA allows thescholarship students from Environmental Engineering Program of ÁREA1, to actin education through work, activities of environmental education in thecommunities surrounding the Rain Forest Area, such as elementary schools ,Middle Schools and University students from other schools. PEA may also be anopportunity for ÁREA1 to use the nature trail in a multidisciplinary way to visitorsas a pre-planning of Natural Resources, Applied Biology, Environmental Geologyand Applied Ecology programs.

SUSTAINABILITY (NUSA)

Ecological project that discuss with students from public schools of Salvador,environmental problems of today. Various activities were organized in order toshare knowledge, make the students aware of the environmental issues facing theirinvolvement with this specific theme in order to make environmental issues objectof their reflection.

The main goal of this project is to integrate all students of Environmental Engineeringwith theoretical and practical learning activities, and social integration, with thefulfillment of "Green Day - Sustainable Day". The objective of NUSA is to continuallyseek the balance between the human and industrial development with environmentalconservation.

WASTE

MANAGEMENT PROGRAMThe release of the Management of Solid Waste Program (PGRS) of ÁREA1Engineering School will benefit the school and the environment, as it looks to drawup the inventory of waste which will guide the actions related to the management ofwaste generated by ÁREA1. This program has a huge importance since it will serveas a precursor to actions that promote the proper disposal of waste from the school,demonstrating the Environmental and Social responsibility of the Institution. Theprogram is being developed in several stages, starting with the identification of wastegenerated by ÁREA1, with the objective of mapping the needed changes topropose an appropriate methodology for the inventory, as the basis for the PGRS.

One of the steps already produced by PGRS-ÁREA1 are the inventory of SolidWaste and the available collectors in ÁREA1’s Building. The next steps will betraining the staff that deal directly with the waste, development of an EnvironmentalEducation Program for the entire Area1 community and choose a cooperative thatwill be responsible for the collection of waste.

PSYCHOLOGY SERVICE

INSTITUTION SERVICE FAIR

Supervised by Ruy Barbosa Psychology Program, the Psychology Service offerstudents the opportunity to participate in Special Programs and ExtensionPrograms, as a complementary activity focused on training, with specificsupervision in various areas of psychology.

Students from Ruy Barbosa’s Psychology Program attended the II PESTALOZZIINSTITUTION SERVICE FAIR (IPB). Trainees attended two internship programs:the program group of cognitive rehabilitation, coordinated by Professor TayaSoledade and psychodrama group, coordinated by Professor Heloise Saback.Students of psychodrama group did an activity with students’ parents of the Instituteand discussed the difficulties of having a child with special educational needs.

COMMUNITARY INVOLVEMENT,HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL

EDUCATION OF ALAGADOS VINEIGHBOORHOOD PROJECT

Community Involvement, Health and Environmental Education of Alagados VINeighborhood Project is an initiative of the Government of the State of Bahia, thatlooks promote social activities, integrated urbanization activities, construction ofhouses to contribute, improving the life quality.

To do so, within their programming activities of the project was on track forCommunity Mobilization and Organization, Health and EnvironmentalEducation, and creating jobs and income. The Education Program had a bigimpact in the community, quality of life and effective citizenship of the families inthis locality. Based on these activities was held the Health Fair and Citizenship

JUSTICE AND

CITIZENSHIP DESKPart of the Citizenship Center, the Justice Desks are spaces for the development oflegal practices and study of the labor law for law students from Ruy Barbosa, servingthe needy community in the city of Salvador.

The Justice and Citizenship Desk is a mechanism for democratizing access tocourt, as it provides services entirely free to the underprivileged population in theunits of mediation and legal advice installed in various neighborhoods of Salvadorand other districts in the state, allowing the decentralization of the judiciary power.

Justice and Citizenship Desks strengthen the social consciousness, by enhancingthe capacity of individuals to straight up their differences, benefits the Judiciary bydecreasing the number of claims, benefits also educational institutions, through theprovision of a legal practice and, finally, the law students, previously trained, whoare covered by a legal expertise and humanistic.

RUY BARBOSA’S

CITIZENSHIP CENTERThe Citizenship Center is structured to provide legal practices, research andextension for Ruy Barbosa’s law program, which, in the service of the poorcommunities of the city of Salvador, offers students the opportunity to participatein special programs and interdisciplinary focused on human rights and businessrelations, focused on training in various areas of Juridical Science.

The Ruy Barbosa’s Citizenship Center is an area of support and development ofcitizenship through free legal service to the community by focusing on low-incomepopulation. Powerful and fundamental toll to the enjoyment of human rights,among others, the legal situation presents itself, often inaccessible to thispopulation group that they do not know their rights and duties, have a bigdisadvantage compared to other communities and have diluted the potential forcitizenship.

Currently, the Center has an agreement with the Public Attorneys of the State ofBahia and an agreement with the Bahia State Court to work out Justice andCitizenship Desk in the northeast of Amaralina.

EDUCACIONAL PROJECT, CHANGING

PRISOSNERS INTO CITIZENSThe campaign of donation of books to the Lemos Brito Penitentiary had collecteda total of 1403 books and journals. The books have all kinds of subjects:educational, literary, legal, etc.

The initiative came from the students of 5th semester of Ruy Barbosa’s LawProgram, Victor Bensabath and Julia Caldas that from a study done with ProfessorAlessandra Prado, in the field of Criminal Law, were inspired to develop a projectthat motivated the Ruy Barbosa community to contribute to the prisoners,providing them with materials that could enable a better school education andtraining.

The campaign and the collection began in October and was helped by students,faculty and staff from Ruy Barbosa. The first part of project ended on November2008, when the creators of the project went to Lemos Brito Penitentiary to donatethe books.

Follow the impressions of Julia Caldas, one of those responsible for the project:"I had great satisfaction in reaching our goal! Inexplicable feeling of doingsomething very important to someone else. I cheer for them to make good use ofbooks. The study is one of the most important social rehabilitation for the prisonersto become truly a citizen! ".

CITIZEN PROJECTThe FTE School supported the Youth Citizen Project of Luis Eduardo MagalhaesFoundation. This institution implemented the Youth Citizen Project since July2008 with funding from the Federal Government and coordinated by SETRE,which qualified the low-income youth to the market.

The project offers 4 courses: Office Assistant, Telemarketing, Kitchen Assistantand Recepcionist. Among various disciplines, they study portuguese, mathematics,HR Management, Business Organization, Basic IT and Advanced ComputerScience.
