DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM OF STUDIES

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Don Soffer Aventura High School - the first high school in Aventura and home of the Barracudas!

We are pleased to provide you with this comprehensive curriculum guide which details the courses we offer, as well as a description of what each course entails. For the 2020-2021 school year, courses that have been included encompass all four grade levels. Please be reminded that the implementation of any course is dependent upon sufficient enrollment. Courses will be reviewed each year to ensure that a high-level of academics is provided to all students. As a charter school, you will find we offer a wide range of courses that lead to a high school diploma in preparation for college and/or future career decisions.

Don Soffer Aventura High School offers students the ability to take classes in Advanced Placement and Cambridge Programs that may eventually lead to a diploma designation in either or both programs. These opportunities have enabled millions of students to take rigorous and relevant college-level courses and earn college credits while still in high school. More information on both programs is available in this comprehensive guide for your student’s program of studies.

Students are encouraged to talk with parents, teachers and guidance counselors to assist in making their course selections. Beginning in 9th grade, students are assigned a guidance counselor who assist in determining an academic plan for their remaining years of high school. Our guidance counselors meet with students throughout the school year to assist with academic needs and concerns.

Don Soffer Aventura High School offers certification tracks that are designed to provide students with courses that will emphasize concepts and principles related to the areas of Biomedical Science and Technology. Students who successfully complete identified courses and requirements related to either track will receive their certification by their senior year.

All of the courses offered at Don Soffer Aventura High School meet the established requirements set by the School Board of Miami-Dade County and the Florida Department of Education. I encourage you to carefully review the guide as you select your courses for the 2019 - 2020 school year, and look forward to serving our students throughout their high school career at Don Soffer Aventura High School.

Sincerely,

David McKnightPrincipal, Don Soffer Aventura High School

CAMBRIDGE AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT DIPLOMAS

Cambridge (AICE) Courses

The Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) is an international diploma that students can earn via an advanced academic curriculum and assessment program written and administered by a non-profit department (CIE) of the University of Cambridge in England. The AICE program courses and examinations may be offered during grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 in worldwide schools registered as CIE Centers. DSAHS was designated as a CIE Center in its first year of operation.

Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone Diploma

AP Capstone is an innovative program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of two courses, AP Seminar and AP Research, and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth, discipline-specific study provided through other AP courses. The AP Capstone curriculum fosters inquiry, research, collaboration, and writing skills through the intensive investigation of topics from multiple perspectives.

In comparison to Cambridge courses, AP courses are also rigorous and students are expected to have high academic expectations, be self-motivated, and display good study habits, in addition to demonstrating a commitment to succeed in this rigorous college preparatory program.

The AP Diploma requires students to earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of student choice.

DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM OF STUDIES

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT COURSE SELECTION

When planning a student's educational program, the objective is for a student to reach his or her highest possible academic potential. The following criteria are considered by the guidance counselor, student advisors, and school administration:

• Available assessment data, including the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and End-of-Course (EOC) assessments

• Past academic achievement• Parent/student input• Student's college and career goals, interests, and motivation as determined by Entrance Interview

*conducted after registration process is completed and the student is formally enrolled

Students may only enroll in courses for which they have met the stated academic requirements/prerequisites.

Entrance Interview

The process for course selection begins once students complete the registration process. Students will then be invited to participate in an entrance interview. Interviews are conducted by the guidance counselor and/or faculty members and are conducted in-person with the student and parent(s)/guardian(s).

Advisory

Prior to the beginning of the school year, the interview team convenes and decides on optimal student advisor placement. All ninth-grade students will then be assigned a freshman advisor. Students in tenth grade will be assigned advisors based on academy selections. Advisors meet with students throughout the year and with parents annually. Students will remain with their same advisor through high school graduation if possible. The goal of an advisory program is to prepare students for adulthood both personally and professionally. Essentially advisory:

• Ensures that students have an opportunity to foster academic engagement and achievement.• Assists students with enhancements to their social and emotional competencies (social awareness, self-

awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making).• Helps to give awareness to and reduce risk behaviors.• Facilitates supportive relationships between students and their advisor over a 4-year period.• Assists student in their acquisition of life skills, healthy decision making, and foster a deeper sense of

community among the student body.

Academy Pathways Overview

Each academy option offered at DSAHS integrates 21st century learning skills within core content and helps prepare students for college and career choices. Students are supported in identifying key relationships between academic subjects and application to a broad field of work. Students can complete and Academy Pathway in conjunction with another Diploma Program if it is deemed appropriate by Administration.

Academy pathways will include a Biomedical track and a Technology track. Both academy pathways require one course per year, culminating in the industry certification exam.

Learners at Don Soffer Aventura High School will be empowered to discover their passions, choose their 9

path, and define their future through a rigorous and relevant high school experience.

Biomedical Academy (Project Lead The Way)

Whether discovering new cancer treatments or teaching healthy lifestyle choices to their communities, today’s biomedical science professionals are tackling big challenges to make the world a better place.

PLTW Biomedical Science students are taking on these same real-world challenges – and they’re doing it before they even graduate from high school. Working with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to problems. Students take from the courses in -demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.

The program structure includes the following planned sequence of courses, in addition to core academic requirements.
