PLAY THE POSSIBILITIES San Jose Jazz Summer Jazz Camp is designed for middle and high school students with skill levels from intermediate and up. Led by camp director Wally Schnalle and many of the region’s best teaching artists, the two-week day camp is held at the state-of-the-art facilities of the Valley Christian Schools Conservatory of the Arts in San Jose. Offering deep immersion into every aspect of jazz—from theory to performance—each student participates in both a small group and big band. One advanced ensemble will be selected to play on the Main Stage at the 2018 San Jose Jazz Summer Fest on Sunday, August 12. • Big Band and Combos • Vocal Groups and Solos • Latin Percussion Lab • Straight Ahead, Latin Jazz and Fusion • Music Theory • Ear Training • Instrument Training • Improvisation • Music Tech • Sight Reading • Composition DONNY MCCASLIN—SPECIAL GUEST INSTRUCTOR Three-time Grammy nominee Donny McCaslin is one of the leading saxophonists, composers and musical pioneers of his generation, receiving wide commercial and critical acclaim in jazz, rock and electronica circles alike. With 12 albums to his name, he is best known for his collaboration with the late David Bowie on his final album Blackstar. Originally from Santa Cruz, Donny has been twice named a Rising Star in the DownBeat Critics Poll and regularly plays the best jazz venues in the world. He’ll work with students on June 28–29 and appear in Camp’s graduation concert.
