News from John Muir Health Foundation ISSUE 4 | SPRING 2015 BRIEFINGS Nancy Pope-Angulo, Nursing Manager of John Muir Health’s new pediatric intensive care unit, demonstrates how a SimBaby infant patient simulator is used to train PICU staff. Donors Show Strong Support for New PICU $1.3 MILLION RAISED IN 2014 TO SUPPORT NEW PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT John Muir Health is poised to open the first and only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Con- tra Costa County, thanks to its flourishing partner- ship with Stanford Children’s Health and a tre- mendous show of support from donors last year. The new eight-bed unit will provide children ages 0 to 18 with highly specialized, critical care that previously could only be found at distances up to 55 miles away. “Now children in our community with serious injuries or illnesses can be treated right here, close to home,” says Jane Willemsen, President and CAO, John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. The importance of having a PICU in Walnut Creek was clearly recognized by generous donors both within and outside the John Muir Health organization. The John Muir Medical Center, Wal- nut Creek Auxiliary contributed $25,000, and John Muir Health employees gave $43,000 through their own annual campaign. Numerous donors success- fully met a $125,000 challenge grant from an anon- ymous donor couple, and an impressive $889,000 was raised at the inaugural Celebrate John Muir Health! fundraising gala on November 1. “You never want any child to have a serious health issue,“ says Willemsen. “But now we have a PICU in our com- munity for those who need that special care.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY AKIM AGINSKY

Donors Show Strong Support for New PICU$1.3 MILLION RAISED IN 2014 TO SUPPORT NEW PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

John Muir Health is poised to open the first and only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Con-tra Costa County, thanks to its flourishing partner-ship with Stanford Children’s Health and a tre-mendous show of support from donors last year.

Several years ago, based on patient and family requests, John Muir Health began to look for a partner to help grow children’s specialty services in Contra Costa County and surrounding communities. Based on our similar missions and clinical excellence, we chose to partner with Stanford Children’s Health.

Formed in 2012, our collaboration now includes a growing number of surgical and medical services, as well as outpatient, inpatient, neonatal and emergency care. The logical next step was developing Contra Costa County’s first and only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for children who require critical care as a result of serious illness or injury.

“We’re so appreciative of the generous support from the numerous donors that helped make the PICU a reality,” says Jane Willemsen, President and CAO of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. “Through donor support and our strong partnership with Stanford Children’s Health, we’re providing the most comprehensive children’s services of any com-munity health system.”

“Our partnership has been extremely successful,” says Christopher G. Dawes, President and CEO of Lu-cile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and Stanford Children’s Health. “Increasing access and convenience to the extraordinary care at our hospitals provides a wonderful resource for the communities John Muir Health serves.”

Insider’s Guide: Our New PICUQ&A WITH ROBERT KADAS, M.D., JOHN MUIR HEALTH PEDIATRICIAN

What is a PICU and why is it such an important addition to John Muir Health’s pediatric services? A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, or PICU, is a special unit that specifically treats critically ill or injured children ages 0 to 18. It is a dedicated area where we can care for our most urgently ill pediatric patients in ways that would not be possible or appropriate in an adult critical care unit. Adding a PICU to our already outstanding pediatric services means that now we can care for practically any pediatric patient, regardless of age or severity of condition.

What types of childhood conditions will we be able to treat here that were previously referred to other institutions? We could not have a PICU without pediatric specialists and trained nurses and staff with expertise in treating these special patients. We now have the depth and breadth of knowledge and capability to care for children who are suffering from a variety of critical illnesses or injuries, including cases caused by:• Severe infection• Poisoning• Extensive surgery• Immunological disorders• Breathing problems from asthma• Complications of diabetes• Near-drowning• Post-cardiopulmonary arrest

How many children do we anticipate being able to treat annually? The Emergency Department at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek sees 47,000 patients annually, and 30 percent of those are pediatric patients. Prior to having our PICU, we would need to transfer any critically ill child to another hospital with specialty services for children, anywhere from 15 to 55 miles away. Now with our own PICU, we can treat these children immediately and keep them close to their homes and families.

Robert Kadas, M.D., a pediatrician with John Muir Health since 1971, has served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics three times during his 44-year tenure. “It is very exciting to have a PICU here,” says Dr. Kadas. “Until now, children needing a PICU would be transported away from John Muir Health, and away from our care. Now we’ll have the best of both worlds—staying close to our patients right here in our communi-ty, and with all the expertise, training and support that our partnership with Stanford Children’s Health makes possible.”

Through play and other techniques, Child Life Specialist Shana Hammers helps young patients and their families process and understand their hospital stay.

John Muir Health employees are generous by nature.

In addition to the tireless hours they devote on the job to ensuring the best possible patient expe-rience, many John Muir Health employees also choose to donate monetarily to the Care & Giving annual employee fund program. In 2013, employee donors elected to

contribute over $43,000 of their giving toward the new PICU. On November 1, 55 employees from various departments generously gave of their time and energy to help at the Celebrate John Muir Health! Gala.

Susie Logoteta, of Health Infor-mation Management, is one of those generous volunteers. Logoteta has

worked for John Muir Health for 11 years and is passionate about the role she plays in giving health to her community. “I support John Muir Health because I know firsthand how important quality health care is,” she says. “As an employee, I know John Muir Health is doing great work for patients, families and our community. I see it every day.”
