curatorialismWhat it means to be curatorial?

• derives from curator: the person in charge of a museum, art collection, or gallery

• curators: criticize, coordinate, analyze, evaluate, and apply art history – they put together the exhibits we see + attend

• curatorial studies + curatorial practices: thinking about and organizing how pieces of artwork go together

• curatorship requires a person to be:1. selective

Evaluate on CRITERIA

1. Quality: check the overall quality

• clarity

• contrast

• composition

2. Subject: is the subject matter identifiable?

• identifiable center of interest

• dominance & placement

3. Content/Context: does the image tell a story?

• message or idea communicated well

4. Method: are editing techniques strong?

• use of lighting and value

• use of Photoshop

How to Establish Unity Among Works

1. Harmony: create a sense of togetherness through “simultaneous combination of elements” by arranging different content, subject and methods and having it still be “eye-catching”

2. Variety: using a variety of elements and interests while avoiding clutter

3. Sets & Sequences: creating a cohesive set or sequence between different images
