  • Amebic liver abscess is a collection of pus in the liver in response to an intestinal parasite.It is caused by Entamoeba histolytica, the same parasite that causes amebiasis amebic dysentery. The parasite may be carried by the blood from the intestines to the liver.

  • The infection occurs worldwide where crowded living conditions and poor sanitation exist ( Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and India)

  • Risk factors for amebic liver abscess include:

    AlcoholismCancerImmunosuppressionMalnutritionOld agePregnancyRecent travel to a tropical regionSteroid use

  • Entamoeba histolytica Pathology1. A Primary Ulcer Can Occur. A primary ulcer can cause rupturing of the bowel and can cause Peritonitis.

  • TreatmentAntibiotics such as metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax). This treatment can usually be delayed until after the abscess has been treated.NEEDLE ASPIRATIONSurgical drainage
