Advisory BoardBoard of Directors

The King Federal Holiday Commission in planning the first celebration in 1986, saw the holiday as “a day for love, not hate; for understanding, not anger; for peace, not war. “ The Commission further declared that it would be a “day when people of all races, religions, classes and stations in life put aside their differences and join in a spirit of togetherness.

We invite the community to come, to walk with us, sit with us, and share with us in the spirit of unity throughout this time as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These MLKSB events are made possible by many volunteers and supporters, including the business and clergy communities. We look forward to continuing to offer these type of events and activities, which bring attention to social justice issues. We hope that they will become part of the fabric of Santa Barbara and surrounding communities. We sincerely appreciate the support of all and our elected officials, who come together to pay tribute to Rev. King’s ideal of the beloved community.

It is a special honor and a privilege to have served as President of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee for the past 6 years. As one of the founding board members, I have served in many capacities since the Committee’s inception in 2007. I am pleased to have provided vision and leadership to the board and, with their help, in establishing MLKSB as a significant organization contributing to the betterment of our community.

Our focus has been two-fold: planning and executing an annual celebration locally for the MLK Holiday and working throughout the year to bring together diverse groups in Santa Barbara and the surrounding communities. During the years from 2012-2018, we expanded our celebration of the King Holiday from one day of events to a 4-day week-end of multiple events, while also providing more direct services to Isla Vista and Santa Ynez Valley communities. Last year we held a healing concert, in an effort to be uplifting to those among us that were still experiencing the trauma of 2018.

We established long-standing relationships with a number of social and envi-ronmental justice organizations, educational entities, and faith-based congrega-tions. Our Essay and Poetry Contest draws participants from -both public and private schools; and we engage over 200 volunteers each year.

Starting in the 1950s, Dr. King expressed concern for “the survival of the world.” He linked environmental and civil rights issues, upon learning that Environmental Protection Agency’s data showed that African Americans were almost 80 percent more likely to live near hazardous industrial pollution sites. Dr. King was primarily concerned with loving humanity and encouraged that all people be embraced. I recently heard a a 15-year old girl on the radio mention that suicide is the leading cause of death for teenagers in America. When asked what her message would be to adults, she replied, acceptance and love.” How much that highlights Dr. King’s message even more!

The Committee’s goal is that whatever events we present - whether educational or cultural,- stimulate the desire in others carry out the principles that Dr King stood for, by confronting and challenging societal issues, that include racial dis-crimination, unfair labor practices, and inadequate healthcare. He strongly felt that no one is better than anyone else, no matter their circumstances.

We look forward to each of you continuing to be an integral part of the MLKSB family and that we can continue to provide high quality programs that speak to the needs of the community, without cost. To accomplish this, we depend on the generosity of our donors and our volunteers. We invite you to help by donating whatever is comfortable for you -whether it be through direct donations, volun-teering your time, or by sharing our work and encouraging others to support it. With your involvement, we can continue our service to the community with the ultimate goal of reaching an even larger audience.

Thank you. E. onja Brown - President

Keynote Speaker

James LawsonPastor and teacher, Reverend James

M. Lawson played a central role in what is best referred to as the Rosa Parks–Martin Luther King Movement for Nonviolence. His work and that of Dr. King and their contemporaries was inspired by their deep devotion to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. They believed they should love everyone, and serve as a moral and strategic force in resisting all forms of

racial and social injustice.Rev. Lawson led desegregation efforts in Nashville, Tennessee, and was a principal organizer for the Freedom Riders, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. After serving 13 months in prison for refusing to cooperate with the Selective Service Draft Act, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree, then spent three years in India teaching and serving as a Methodist missionary. There, he gained practical knowledge and experience about satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance, which he later applied to his trainings as a field officer for the Fellowship of Reconciliation.Rev. Lawson received his graduate degree from Boston University’s School of Theology, and later received Vanderbilt Divinity School’s first Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2018, he was awarded the UCLA Medal, which in the past has been presented to presidents, philanthropists, artists, and astronauts. He also received the Congressional Gold Medal and other awards too numerous to mention. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said that Rev. Lawson was “the greatest teacher of nonviolence in America,” and the great John Lewis called him, “the architect of this movement.” Rev. Lawson lives in Los Angeles and teaches at UCLA and California Sate University at Northridge.

Core KnowledgeCore Knowledge is an academic community within La Cumbre Junior

High School. It is designed for students who will thrive in an enriching environment and benefit from a rigorous college-preparatory education. Students reflect and embrace the diversity of thought and personal contribution to the school community through their academic potential and achievements, creativity, character, athleticism, and involvement in school activities. Core Knowledge is built upon the idea that a strong student community will inspire academic success. To build this community, all Core Knowledge students have a continuous three-class block of English and history classes, move as a cohort between seventh and eighth grades, participate in field-trips across the state, and enjoy many community-building events throughout the year. Additionally, students are exposed to all the Common Core Standards and an additional set of rigorous English and social studies topics. As teachers, we aim to shape our students not just as scholars, but as human beings. We believe an education ultimately isn’t about what you get, it’s about what you are going to contribute. So students learn to see beyond our walls, model respect for others, build relationships that will inspire them and others, and discover the passion from which they will change the world. Dancing is one way students learn to relate to each other, gain a stronger sense of self-control and self-esteem, and benefit from practicing a life-long skill.

Li every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty;let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea.Sing a song full of the faiththat the dark past has taught us,sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;facing the rising sun of our new day begun, let us march on till victory is won.Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died;yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feetcome to the place for which our people sighed? We have come over a way

that with tears has been watered;we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last -where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;thou who hast, by thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee, lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand, true to our God, true to our native land

Source: Li Up Your Hearts: psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs #44

Li Ev’ry Voice & Sing - oen called “e Black National Anthem” was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) and then set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954) in 1899.
