There’s this book by Malcolm Gladwell called Blink. In a nutshell (and for all the stupid

people who don’t read books anymore) it’s a long-winded, but interesting, examination of how people make snap judgments about others. Sometimes those judgments are based on race, gender, attractiveness – sometimes they’re even based on height. Gladwell’s point is that, whether we like to admit it or not, we’re all obviously (and sometimes not-so-obviously) guilty of making these judgments. I know I am. (Blink is a great read, by the way, but if you buy it at that “Nook” e-reader stand that someone had the audacity to put in front of Barnes & Noble, I’ll kill you. Save the paper books. Kill trees.)

I’m not going to lie: I am a person who judges people by the kind of music they listen to.

At the expense of sounding like an asshole who weeds out friends based on musical preferences, I’ll come right out and say it: If you tell me within the first few minutes of meeting me that you’re a fan of 311, Nickelback, Dave Matthews Band or Creed, I probably won’t like you. I can’t help it, I just won’t. And come on – cough, Sublime, cough.

It’s just that music is really important to me, and those bands suck. If you like them, it probably means that you hate music, which means I can’t like you. See? It’s simple. And trust me, you probably wouldn’t like me any better (no, not Eddie Vedder – I kinda hate him, too). I’m really

just saving us time in the long run – and by time, I mean the seven seconds

it took me to decide I didn’t like you based solely on your shitty musical preferences. Yes, I am a crappy human being.

On a recent evening, while standing at the bar at Will’s Pub, I realized I wasn’t alone in my music snobbery (not that this was a revelation). During a conversation with two friends, they summed it up perfectly.

“I’m not closed-minded,” Mike said.

“You don’t have to like everything I like. You just

have to be in the same ballpark.”

“No, no, it’s not that I don’t like you,” Jeremy added and

fake-lovingly cupped my face in his hands. “It’s just that every time I look at you ... I see Creed.”

That line was so eloquent that I may

just have to use it myself.

Another way to determine whether we’re going to be besties is to find out how strong your fondness is for a little electro genre called “dubstep,” aka the complete and total destruction of music.

A while back, I was struck with curiosity (sadly) about this shitty sound I was starting to hear everywhere, so I asked Alejandro Ricon, one of Orlando’s best vinyl DJs, to clue me in. After all, you can’t validly hate on something unless you know all about it. Alex told me that, while he respected those who chose to play dubstep, he himself refused to, despite its rapid rise to popularity in the club scene.

He also sent me a few YouTubes so I could educate myself about the genre. What did I learn from these videos? That dubstep is a musical mind fuck. It’s so tricky that the people in the videos couldn’t even dance to it. Having me try to describe it would probably get us nowhere, so here’s a Wikipedia entry that explains what it’s about: “tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples and occasional vocals.”

Unfortunately, that description makes even less sense than the actual music. I guess when it comes to dubstep, you never really get a feel for what, exactly, you are desperately trying to move to.

Which brings me to Ladies Night at Sky 60 – the night I mistakenly went to instead of going to see another live band play during the best music month in years. Instead, I went to catch Cliff T and Dominick mixing dubstep into their set with my friend (who I am sometimes ashamed to know) Kevin of Smile for Camera and Takovr.

For a moment everything seemed great. Good music. Good vibe. Then came the damn dubstep. This is the part where I have to try not to offend the general public, or any genre of people I laid my eyes on that evening. Suffice to say: droves of sorority girls dancing like cavemen. Glowsticks. Shitty break-dancing circle. My ears ... bleeding and ripped off. Laying on the ground. Getting dubstepped on.

The end. And never again. And no, none of you I met that night are allowed to be my friends.

Yes, basing your friendships on things like musical interests is probably wrong. Then again, people are passionate about things that are important to them, and at the end of the day you tend to hang out with the people who share your passion.

Is that so wrong?

Just remember: In the end, if we don’t end up being friends, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. “It’s just that every time I look at you ... I see Creed.” ♦

THE LOCALCOOL

We’re going to be honest with you here. We couldn’t come up with a whole lot of cool things to write about this month, hence the plethora of lame kitten heads in this column.

So do us a favor and just abstain from using a certain word, glare at liquor-store employees as they close up shop during hours only Christians would approve of and avoid Gallagher at all costs. Super cool guaranteed. Now, read on. All the cool kids are doing it.

ABC AND TOTAL WINE STORE HOURSABC AND TOTAL WINE STORE HOURSWe’ve been making this wish forever, but it still hasn’t

been granted: We want ABC Liquors and the almighty Total Wine (aka Drinks-R-Us) to

please keep their doors open past 10 and 11 p.m. every night. Maybe there’s some l a w that says that a store that serves

liquor can’t be open during the hours that everyone

in the world does their actual drinking, but that would be stupid. Last

we checked, we didn’t want to grab a bottle of

Crown and drink with our friends in the middle of our 9-to-5 work day (OK, that’s a complete lie, but still). It just would be cool if these places could change their hours to accommodate Orlando’s drinking needs, because 7-11 scares us at night.

“DOUCHEBAG”No, not the person whose Jersey Shore-style partying embodies everything you hate in the world. Really, we just hate the damn word. Can we please extract this insult from our ever-regressing language and lay it to rest? When club promoters are throwing it around (example: “NO DOUCHEBAGS ALLOWED IN THE CLUB!”) and when people are desperately trying to creatively re-imagine the word (example: douchturd), it’s time to drop it completely and come up with a new insult.

STARDUST VIDEO AND COFFEESTARDUST VIDEO AND COFFEENine years ago you could walk into Stardust Video and Coffee and – gasp! – come out with a video and coffee. These days, Stardust aims to keep you a lot longer than the time it takes to to pick out Dancer in the Dark or La Dolce Vita during that pretentious movie-watching stage everyone goes through. Walk in there now and the videos are pushed against a wall to allow for wifi-friendly seating and poetry slams (every Wednesday), an expanded menu and cafe and a wonderful full liquor bar. Here’s to getting their signature cup of crack-coffee with a splash of Bailey’s or brandy. As if Stardust wasn’t giving enough to Williamsbur-glando, every Monday evening at 6 p.m., local farmers and art-ists convene in the parking lot for the Audubon Park Commu-nity Market, where you can find hand-made jewelry, ready-made meals prepared with local ingredients and locally grown produce and meat. Which is great, because it always makes us feel better when we know that the cow we ate died closer to home. Thank you, Stardust.

It’s not that we have anything bad to say about Stigma – the bar is brand spanking

new – it’s just that our sarcasm doesn’t always translate well on paper. So we’re gonna be

silent on this one, give you the basics and let you decide what kind of kitten head this place

deserves.

In this bar you can get tattooed. You can get served alcohol while being tattooed. Or you can watch other

people get tattooed. Or you can get tattooed while watching other people get tattooed while being served alcohol, AND you can do all of this while your friends take stripper pole-dancing lessons in front of you. Pole

dancing, drinking and getting tattooed.

Why are you looking at us? We have nothing to say ...

ORLANDO PUPPET FESTIVALIn particular, Crime and Puppetment

What’s weirder than a puppet show? A puppet show with a terrible pun in the name. We really

didn’t think there was enough interest in puppetry to warrant a dedicated puppet festival, but apparently we were wrong (or someone else is very misguided). We think they’re really missing the target with this festival, though. If they really want to get people interested in puppets, they should base the shows on knockoffs of movies the porn industry has made. You know, like Star Whores, XXX-Men, Riding Miss Daisy or Gangbangs of New York. Not Crime and Punishment. Make it relevant, you know? We would much rather see Puppets on a Plane than that.

That said we admit that we’re stretching the “cool” quotient on this one. We think it’s cool because it’s an alternative to watching people stumble around drunk at night. We’d rather watch tiny versions of people stumbling around – tiny people connected to strings.

DAVE AND BUSTER’SDAVE AND BUSTER’S (coming soon)coming soon)International DriveEver see the Dave & Buster’s commercials on TV and wonder why the hell they air them here when the nearest location is in Jacksonville? It just seems so cruel and unusual to show commercials featuring happy, middle-aged people running around what looks like a Chuck E. Cheese for adults when there aren’t any Dave & Buster’s nearby. Finally, though, they’re bringing one to town. Soon (they still haven’t given us an exact date) we can finally find out why everyone in the commercials looks so ecstatic when the chain known for its food, drinks and interactive environment – think video games, pool, darts, shuffleboard, you name it – opens on I-Drive (surprise, surprise). Hit up a D&B happy hour, then go whip some ass at Dance Dance Revolution in the arcade.

Step back please, the future has arrived. Introducing Touch, a new venue opening in December that will bring Orlando a bit closer to having a nightlife scene like the ones found in Miami, Vegas and the like. Touch, located next door to the Amura in downtown Orlando, will feature an eclectic mix of DJs spinning all night and a finger-foods menu that’ll offer an alternative to the usual late-night fare (i.e., sloppy slices of pizza). The innovative thing about this place is that everything on the menu can be ordered via iPhone-like touch-screens built into each table. You can also use your table’s touch-screen to chat with people at the tables nearby. Hello, future, bye bye physical human interaction! OK, we kid. The touch-screen tables are just one part of the Touch experience. The DJs are not robots (yet), and the floor is open for dancing and all the real face-time you need. Seriously, though, Touch should make for an entertaining night out for anyone – especially those who can’t seem to keep their fingers off a mobile touch-screen device whenever they’re out in public.

NEW TO TOWN

Church Street has become quite the melting pot lately, as that brick-paved street with which we have developed a love-hate relationship continues to try to revinvent itself. Mojo Cajun Bar and Grill will now bring a Big Easy experience – as well as a full bar – to the scene. Its food ranges from Cajun to Creole to straight-up American, but the ambience is all New Orleans. Look for this bar in the spot that used to be the Rosie O’Grady’s Good Time Emporium – aka, the empty building at the end of Church and Garland.

3402 Technological Ave.We’re not sure when the UCF crowd’s taste turned to something other than the Beast, but apparently it has. As of October the UCF area is now home to the newest location for the World of Beer franchise. It’s a bar that welcomes both the beer aficionado and the hops newbie. All staff members are trained in the art of brew and are more than happy to talk beer with the know-it-alls or explain it all to the uninitiated. The bar will also focus on music and promises to bring local and regional acts to play. Don’t forget to check out the new Dr. Phillips World of Beer location also!

THE PAUSES (Indie)Listen if you like: Rilo Kiley, Metric, Built To Spill

The Pauses recently finished recording a new album with J Robbins at Mag-pie Cage. If that studio name rings a bell for you, then this is definitely a band you should check out. This band, fronted by Tierney Tough (that’s her real last name, not a moniker she was given for being less-than-a-pleasure to deal with), has a distinctly 90s indie-rock, Kim Deal-esque sound. The Pauses are a hard-working band, and they recently fundraised for and self-released their new album. Few bands in Orlando have that kind of gump-tion or work ethic, and I find it refreshing.

Orlando is blessed with a diverse local music scene. While most of the big crowds go out to see better-known touring acts, some of our talented local bands are overlooked. Featured below are some

of the local acts I think are worth checking out.

GATORFACE (Punk)Listen if you like: The Descendents, the Ramones, the Adolescents

Gatorface – a band that consists of former mem-bers of Orlando punk bands New Mexican Disaster Squad and Polluted Youth, and current members of VRGNS, None More Black and No Friends – have all the makings of a punk-rock super group. Many people have preconceived notions about punk rock and think it’s just loud, fast, loose and simple; when Gatorface play, they invalidate those preju-dices. They play loud, they play fast and they do it with precision. This is especially true of the band’s rhythm section: bassist Alex Goldfarb and drum-mer Richard Minino, who have been playing in bands together for more than 10 years. Gatorface

lean toward pop punk rather than hardcore punk, but they don’t sugarcoat things to the point where they run the risk of estranging fans of harder stuff.

HOT HANDS (Noise Pop)Listen if you like: The Ettes, Das Wanderlust, Cheap Time

Hot Hands is Jeffery Howard on guitar and Kristin Messina on drums. What you might notice missing from this group, on paper at least, is a bassist. What you realize when you see them perform live, though, is that the chemistry these two have onstage makes up for it. Their music could be summed up as rock & roll and left at that – and really, in its most elemental form, that’s what it is – but the individual talents of Howard and Messina

make Hot Hands unique. Howard coaxes sounds from his guitar that go way beyond mere strumming, and Messina beats the piss out of her drums. Hot Hands give the audience an experience much grander than what people usually get when they watch two people on a stage, going through the motions.

BANANAFISH (Indie, Folk)Listen if you like: Neil Young, Sun Kil Moon, Nick Drake

When I asked Travis Reed of Bananafish to describe their music to me, he said it, “sounds like a garden on fire while the sun sets in obtuse purples.” He also described their genre as “symphonic mood swing.” I’ll be honest – I have no clue what any of that means. In my words? They sound like they could be the soundtrack for some epic scene in a John Wayne movie, but they don’t sound overtly cowboy-ish. They have a dark, distinctly American vibe to their music, and when they play live they build drama using vocal harmonies. In fact, they’re one of the few bands in Orlando that I’d say even has drama in their songs.
