Why is rupture disk used?

‐ Some fluids are flammable‐May create deposits in the pressure relief valve‐ Fluid may freeze or solidify

Quality requirements for these devices?

Section I does not give any quality, marking or Code stamping requirements other than set pressure tolerance (which is the same as Section VIII).

To have disks supplied where production is done under an accepted quality system, Section VIII UDdisks could be used.

Section IV: Pressure relief valves for expansion tanks

HG‐709.2 Closed Heating Systems. An expansiontank shall be installed that will be consistent with the volumeand capacity of the system. If the system is designedfor a working pressure of 30 psi (200 kPa) or less, the tankshall be suitably designed for a minimum hydrostatic testpressure of 75 psi (520 kPa). Expansion tanks for systemsdesigned to operate above 30 psi (200 kPa) shall be constructedin accordance with Section VIII, Division 1. Alternatively,a tank built to Section X requirements may beused if the pressure and temperature ratings of the tankare equal to or greater than the pressure and temperatureratings of the system. Provisions shall be made for drainingthe tank without emptying the system, except for prepressurizedtanks.

Pressure relief valves for expansion tanks

HG‐709.3 Hot Water Supply Systems. If a system is equipped with a check valve or pressure reducing valve in the cold water inlet line, consideration should be given to the installation of an airtight expansion tank or other suitable air cushion. Otherwise, due to the thermal expansion of the water, the safety relief valve may lift periodically.If an expansion tank is provided, it shall be constructed in accordance with Section VIII, Division 1 or Section X. Except for prepressurized tanks, which should be installed on the cold water side, provisions shall be made for draining the tank without emptying the system.See Figure HLW‐809.1 for a typical acceptable installation.

Capacity

What is the difference between Section I and Section VIII in how the capacity is calculated?

• Section I capacity is based on rated overpressure (P) of 1.03 x set pressure + 14.7 psia

• Section VIII capacity is based on rated overpressure (P) of 1.10 x set pressure + 14.7 psia

Would the Section VIII valve with the stamped capacity of 4,421 lbs/hr relieve enough?

Set Pressure Tolerance

For Set Pressures up to and including 300 psi the tolerances of Section I and Section VIII are identical.

• +/‐ 2 psi for pressures less than or equal to 70 psi

• +/‐ 3% for pressures greater than 70 and less than or equal to 300 psi

For Section VIII the set pressure tolerance remains at +/‐ 3% for set pressures greater than 300 psi.

Set Pressure Tolerance (Cont.)

For Section I the tolerance for set pressures greater than 300 psi is as follows:

• Set pressure tolerance is +/‐ 10 psi for set pressures greater than 300 psi and less than or equal to 1000 psi.

• Set pressure tolerance is +/‐ 1% for set pressures greater than 1000 psi.

Blowdown Requirements

Section I production blowdown requirement:

• Blowdown shall be set to Manufacturer’s specifications (PG‐73.5.2).

• PG‐72.1 states that the valve be designed and constructed so that the minimum blowdown is 2 psi or 2% whichever is greater.

• Manufacturer’s specifications will likely result in a higher blowdown than 2% (typically around 10%).

For Section VIII there is no production blowdown requirement.

<Module Title>

Page 35: Dual Applications Overpressure Protection Devices Only...2014/10/08  · marking, and installation of pressure relief devices required by this Article shall meet the applicable requirements

Materials

There are numerous materials permitted in Section VIII that are not permitted in Section I.  If a valve is designed solely for Section VIII service it may not comply with Section I material requirements.

<Module Title>

Nameplate Marking

• Section VIII clearly states in paragraph UG‐129(b) that a Section I valve may be used on pressure vessels.

<Module Title>

Page 37: Dual Applications Overpressure Protection Devices Only...2014/10/08  · marking, and installation of pressure relief devices required by this Article shall meet the applicable requirements

Nameplate Marking (Cont.)

• Section I does not clearly disallow valves constructed under the rules of other Code Sections.  However PG‐110 states the marking requirements and does not mention anything other than the Certification Mark with “V” Designator.

• Last sentence of PG‐110 states “The marking shall include the following:”

• PG‐110(g) states “Certification Mark as shown in Figure PG‐105.1 with a “V” Designator…”

VR Scenario

A VR Certificate holder asks the following question:

If I have a Section VIII valve with a “UV” Designator that is dual certified for Section I, can I us it in a Section I application if I repair it under the VR program, recalculate the capacity, and reset the valve to meet Section I set pressure and blowdown requirements?

<Module Title>

Page 39: Dual Applications Overpressure Protection Devices Only...2014/10/08  · marking, and installation of pressure relief devices required by this Article shall meet the applicable requirements

VR Scenario (Cont.)

The answer is no!

• There are no provisions in either ASME or NBICfor altering the Designator or the old Code Symbol stamp.

• PG‐110 states valve used in a Section I application shall be marked with the “V” Designator.

<Module Title>

Page 40: Dual Applications Overpressure Protection Devices Only...2014/10/08  · marking, and installation of pressure relief devices required by this Article shall meet the applicable requirements

Summary

Overall Section I is more stringent than Section VIII

• Valve performance (Set Pressure, Blowdown, and Capacity)

• Materials permitted in construction• Marking requirements only permit the “V”
