You’ll be officially welcomed by the Mayor and will have the opportunity to meet with representatives of Dubbo’s community organisations including service clubs, volunteer groups and sporting clubs.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT DUBBODubbo’s past, present and future is a matrix of firsts, lasts and one-offs. The village that once became a town that eventually became a large regional City has many unique stories to tell.

1. Dubbo is the Aboriginal word for Red Earth and was founded in 1849.

2. The Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets is the largest saleyards in the nation with more than 1.59 million sheep and 271,000 cattle sold at the facility in 2013/14.

MACQUARIE CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSICMacquarie Conservatorium of Music offers a broad range of high quality music education programs, as part of the network of NSW Regional Conservatoriums. Music tuition, special workshops and performance activities are available for all ages, from pre-school to adult, and for all skill levels, beginner to advanced.

Based in Dubbo’s city centre with a staff of specialist music teachers, Macquarie Conservatorium’s onsite

programs include early childhood music, instrumental, vocal and theory tuition, guitar, drumming, brass, wind and string ensembles, youth music theatre, and concerts and workshops with visiting artists.

Macquarie Conservatorium also delivers music programs in schools throughout Dubbo, and in Narromine, Gilgandra and Wellington. Tuition via video conferencing offers music education options for students in remote areas.

UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY SCHOOL OF RURAL HEALTHThe University of Sydney’s School of Rural Health was established in Dubbo in 2001 with the dual aims of teaching medicine in a rural setting and strengthening the rural medical workforce.

Each year around 60 Sydney medical program students attend our campuses in Dubbo and Orange.

They spend up to one year of their four year degree with us taught by health practitioners throughout central and western NSW.

The School of Rural Health has evolved in response to local and regional needs.

The school employs over 40 staff and more than 200 local doctors and physicians as tutors.

All classes are hosted on campus with some specialised classes held via video link with Sydney.

These places are highly competitive as rural students receive unique learning opportunities and practical experience.

Rainbow Cottage Childcare Centre, owned and operated by Dubbo City Council, is a not-for-profit centre operating for the benefit of the community.

We are a long day care centre providing care and education to children from six weeks to six years of age.

Open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, 50 weeks of the year.

Rainbow Cottage closes for two weeks over Christmas with our last day coinciding with the end of the last school term.

All parent fees go to the running, maintenance and improvement of the services offered to families.

Dubbo is a strategically placed health-care provider to a geographic area one-third the size of New South Wales, providing major public and private hospital and allied health services.

Dubbo is home to the Western NSW Local Health District which stretches from Bathurst in the east to Cobar in the west. Dubbo provides health services to a population of 120,000 across a geographic area one-third the size of the State.

Dubbo’s health network includes more than 80 general practitioners; 50 specialists; diagnostic services; and an extensive primary and community health network.

The City’s health care and social assistance sector is the largest industry in Dubbo providing employment for up to 16% of Dubbo’s workforce.

The City is serviced by Dubbo Base Hospital, a 151-bed rural referral hospital providing emergency and acute medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric care. Dubbo Base Hospital is currently undergoing a $91 million redevelopment scheduled for completion in late 2015.

Dubbo Private Hospital and Lourdes Hospital are also licensed to provide a range of services in Dubbo such as surgery, medicine, rehabilitation, obstetric and neonatal care. Dubbo also offers five aged-care centres.

Dubbo houses scores of dentists and orthodontists providing general and specialised care within surgeries located across the City.

Getting around Dubbo is a breeze with simple-to-navigate roads, painless parking and easily accessible public transport.

RATES AND CHARGESHow are my rates calculated?Council determines the combination of rates, charges, fees and pricing policies needed to fund the services it provides to the community. This is called a revenue policy. The revenue policy contains a rating structure that determines which rates and charges you have to pay and how they will be calculated. RANGER SERVICESWhere do I take stray animals?The Dubbo City Animal Shelter is located on Boothenba Road and can be contacted on (02) 6882 1934. The Shelter is a safe haven for lost and stray cats and dogs, keeping them protected until their owner (or a new owner) can be found. Fees apply for the release of impounded animals and animals must be registered before release. Suitable unclaimed animals are re-homed through sales at the Shelter.

WATER SUPPLYWhat do I do if I think there is a leak on my property? Take a reading after the last person has gone to the toilet or brushed their teeth at night. Take a second reading before anyone uses any water in the morning. If no one has used any water overnight and the reading has changed, then you know there is a leak. Contact a plumber to locate and repair the leak.

What do I do if my water supply is interrupted?Council provides the City with a 24-hour emergency paging service. For water pressure, breaks and repairs call Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. Residents will be connected to Council’s pager service contractor. The operator will ask questions such as the nature of the problem and the address so as to expedite dispatch of a service crew as soon as possible.

WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTIONWhen are my general waste and recycling bins collected?Council manages the waste and recycling services of Dubbo and its villages. For households within the kerbside collection area, your garbage bins are serviced weekly and recycling bins are serviced fortnightly on the same day of the week as your garbage bin. A map of collection days and a list of recyclables can be viewed at dubbo.nsw.gov.au/CouncilServices/WasteandRecycling.html

What do I do if I missed my bin collection?You can drop your recycling for free to Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre on Cooba Road and JR Richards and Sons on Fitzroy Street in Dubbo. There are also recycling drop off points in Wongarbon, Ballimore and Eumungerie.

You can drop domestic waste at the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre on Cooba Road for a charge per utility or small trailer. The Centre operates 8am to 5pm weekdays and 9am to 5pm on weekends and can be contacted on (02) 6887 3382.

HORTICULTURAL SERVICESWho do I contact if a tree needs to be maintained on my street or a park needs to be mowed?Council protects and maintains more than 14,500 street trees in the Dubbo urban area and manages 821 hectares of parkland throughout Dubbo. If you have a request for mowing, planting, pruning or removal of trees on Council lands contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. The area will be assessed and any necessary work will be carried out by our staff.

SEWERAGE SERVICESWhat do I do if there is a sewage overflow?Council maintains and repairs the treatment plants, pipes and pumping stations that supply water to and take sewage from households in the urban areas of Dubbo. Council is responsible for the sewerage pipes up to the first pipe joint within your property. If you notice a sewage overflow contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000.

ROAD NETWORKWho do I report road, footpath and cycleway repairs to?For road, footpath and cycleway maintenance repairs please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre (02) 6801 4000. To report street lighting outages or faults contact Essential Energy on 13 23 91 or for traffic light faults please contact Roads and Maritime Services Transport Management Centre on 131 700.

HUMAN ENVIRONMENTWho do I report pollution to?Concerns about pollution should be reported to Council’s Customer Service Centre on (02) 6801 4000, the Environment Protection Authority Pollution Hotline on 131 555 or in the case of an emergency the Fire Brigade on 000.

Is Council responsible for inspecting public premises?Council is responsible for ensuring food outlets, beauty salons, pools and other registered public premises comply with statutory requirements to ensure health and safety standards are upheld at all times.
