Dear Friend of Strawdog,

Thank you for contributing to the success of our 24th season. I am truly grateful to all of you for your support and patronage. Let me be the first to invite you to participate in our 25th Anniversary Season. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with our Strawdog family, friends and community. There are many factors that contribute to a theatre company surviving and thriving for 25 years. These factors are many and too many to list all. This success cannot be dependent on one person or group of actors and artists. This success comes from a community and collaborative effort of our administration staff, ensemble and company members, our board of directors, and dedicated audience members, like you.

Strawdog Theatre Company thanks our past board president, Gregory Altman, for his financial contributions as well as his tireless dedication to the success of Strawdog over the years. Thank you to our out going treasurer and board member, Nora Stapleton, for her continued support and dedication. Thanks to the efforts of Gregory and Nora, Strawdog continues to achieve our mission and live our values.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank all of our current board members for their time, dedication, and unconditional support of our theatre company. Our board of directors at Strawdog is a working board dedicated to success and quality. A big thank you to several board members for their work over the past season is in order. To board member Jennifer Nelson - her efforts include heading our collaboration with Strawdog ensemble members and the students and faculty of the Harrington College of Design on creating and developing marketing materi-als for this current season and for our 25th Anniversary season. To board member Joyce McGreevy - besides filling the unofficial role as Strawdog’s head cheerleader and pep coach, she directs efforts to expand the theater experience for our patrons and greater community through our dramaturgical lobby displays and our Play Rites! series. Finally, to board member Mark Warner - his dedication and oversight of our grants and development activities is invaluable to Strawdog and helps to bring the art of Strawdog Theatre Company to our community for years to come. Nigel Brown (Chorus) is honored to be working with Strawdog Theatre for the first time and to be working again with Brandon Bruce. He holds a BA in

Theatre Arts from the University of Iowa. This past summer, Nigel performed as The Mute in The Fantasticks. Other credits include Veneer in The Deal by Louis Black, Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Manta Ray in Akarui.

McKenzie Chinn (Julia) is delighted to work with Strawdog Theatre Company for the first time. Most recently she worked at The Goodman Theatre on David

Mamet’s Race. McKenzie moved to Chicago from Washington, D.C. in 2008 where her credits include The School for Scandal, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, All That I Will Ever Be by Alan Ball, Apocalyptic Butterflies by Wendy McLeod, the regional premier of Opus by Michael Hollinger, and 365 Days/365 Plays by Susan Lori Parks. In Chicago she has also worked with Victory Gardens, Pine Box Theater Company, and Griffin Theatre Company. She is currently working on Hogtown, a

ARTISTIC D IRECTOR ’S NOTES

I am so very happy and honored that this production of The Duchess of Malfi is the cap on my first season as Artistic Director at Strawdog. We’ve been blessed with two great produc-tions this season - Old Times and The Petrified Forest. We’ve had extraordinary efforts from some pretty fantastic artists and we’ve been extremely grateful to our patrons who have shared these experiences with us.

And now comes a project that has held great personal significance for me for quite some time. When outgoing Artistic Director Nic Dimond asked me what show I would like to direct for my first production at Strawdog, I gravitated toward the most audacious, yet arresting piece I could find: The Duchess of Malfi. I find its language both beautiful and har-rowing. It’s a play that demands everything from every artist involved, forcing you to strive only for the boldest of choices and apply your greatest effort.

This production is the result of extraordinary collaboration. The actors in our production are the best kind of actor - they are theatre-makers. Each actor brings with him/her a vast array of skills, knowledge, and a powerful creativity. The movement discipline we’re em-ploying is a hybrid of many approaches including but not limited to Suzuki, Grotowski, and Butoh. No element of this production has been made by just one individual - some ideas were handed down to us from past directors, designers, and teachers, some were created in the rehearsal room as the result of our exploration, and some were just accidents. In short, nothing we are doing here is new - but we’re mixing it all up into a new recipe.

We hope you can stick around tonight or come back for our highly energetic and inventive late-night events – which usually follow each of our performances. Joshua Davis (Bosola) recently received an MFA in Theater Performance from Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Credits include: Laugh Out Loud Day (Goodman

Theatre), Vivian Matalone’s The Pilgrim Papers (Berkshire Theatre Festival), A Christmas Carol (Berkshire Theatre Festival), The Three Musketeers (Double Edge Theatre Company), and The Threepenny Opera (Brandeis Theatre Company). Joshua is also the Associate Artistic Director of The Ruckus Theater in Rogers Park. Ruckus credits include: Heist Play, Tell It..., The Gay American, Escape from the Haltsburg Boys Choir, and 15 Minutes.

Cate Davison (Chorus) is delighted to make her Strawdog debut with this production. She worked with Brandon last summer and is so grateful to continue

partnering with him. Her most recent role was as Anne Deever in the Shawnee Theatre production of All My Sons. Other past roles include Evelyn in The Shape of Things, Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, and Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes.

Lindsey Dorcus (Cariola) is thrilled to return to Strawdog after appearing in Good Soul of Szechuan two seasons ago. Other recent credits include

From the Circle, Orpheus (both Filament Theatre), The Ring Cycle (The Building Stage), and The Astronaut’s Birthday (Redmoon). She has also performed locally with Next Theatre, Links Hall, Adventure Stage, Manual Cinema, and the Mammals. Lindsey is a proud member of the Barrel of Monkeys acting ensemble.

Stephen Dunn (Antonio) is very excited to be making his Strawdog debut as Antonio Bologna in this production of The Duchess of Malfi. He has worked with

director Brandon Bruce twice before in The Ruling Class and Terra Nova. For the past eight years Stephen was a member of Infamous Commonwealth Theatre and appeared in their productions of: Wonderful World, The Kentucky Cycle, Cloud 9 (Jeff nomination for best supporting actor), The Lady From Dubuque, Resort 76, Lewis and Clark Reach the Euphrates, Odin’s Horse, The Grapes of Wrath, The Crucible, Escape From Happiness, A Doll’s House, and Fifth of July. Some of his other local and regional credits include: Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Blithe Spirit, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Nights Dream. He has also appeared in the A&E television series The Beast and several commercials which he hopes no one has ever seen

Paul Fagen* (Chorus) is thrilled to be performing in Duchess, marking the first production helmed by Strawdog’s new Artistic Director, Brandon Bruce. An

ensemble member since 2009, Paul’s other Strawdog performances include Red Noses (Father Toulon), The Good Soul of Szechuan (Mr. Shu Fu), and The Petrified Forest (Alan Squire). Other Chicago credits include productions with Next Theatre (The Metal Children), Griffin Theatre (Company), The House Theatre of Chicago (The Attempters), Speaking Ring Theatre (Bright Room Called Day, The Crucible, Caucasian Chalk Circle), Halcyon Theatre (Yerma), Chicago Fusion Theatre and multiple performances with Quest Theatre Ensemble.

Kyle A. Gibson* (Chorus) is a lifelong Chicagoan and thrilled to be marking his first show as a Strawdog Ensemble Member, after previously appearing in The

Master and Margarita and both productions of Red Noses. Additionally, Kyle has worked

with Griffin Theatre (both in town and Nat’l Tour), Lifeline Theatre, Adventure Stage Chicago, Emerald City, Oak Park Festival, Theatre Hikes, The Actors Gymnasium, and is part of the Collective at Bailiwick Chicago. Kyle has also appeared in numerous industrial and multimedia films and internet commercials and is a proud member of S.A.G. Aside from on stage, you can also find him in the kitchen, baking away. Michael Sherwin (Chorus) is thrilled to be making his Strawdog debut. A Glenview native, Michael graduated from ENMU with a BFA in Theatre

Performance and acted in Phoenix for 6 years. He returned to Chicago in 2004, and last year appeared in Redtwist Theatre’s Man from Nebraska, Elling, and Opus, and also played the title character in The History of King Henry IV for Oak Park Festival Theatre.

John Taflan (Ferdinand) is very happy to be making a show with Strawdog for the first time! Other Chicago credits include: 6 Characters in Search of an Author, No

Exit, and The Threepenny Opera (The Hypocrites), The Beats (16th Street Theater), Pornography (Steep Theatre), Hideous Progeny (LiveWire Chicago Theatre), The Glorious Ones (BoHo) and Chess (Theo Ubique).

Justine C. Turner* (The Duchess) is delighted to be a part of this production at the theatre company she calls home. She was last seen in Ask Aunt Susan at The

Goodman theatre as part of the New Stages workshop. She is a proud company member of Strawdog and a proud founding member of The Plagiarists. She is thankful to have worked in the past at the Goodman, Writers’ Theatre, Timeline Theatre, Factory theatre, Famous Door, Defiant theatre, Rivendell, Noble Fool Theatricals, A Crew of Patches, and Journeymen Theatre Company. Look for her this summer in the remount of RenFaire! A Fistful of Ducats at the Factory Theatre.

Christopher M. Walsh (The Cardinal, Co-Fight Choreogapher) is incredibly excited to be making his Strawdog debut. Chris has been a member of Lifeline Theatre’s artistic ensem-

ble since 2010, where he has been seen onstage in Hunger, Watership Down, Never�where, Treasure Island, Busman’s Honeymoon, and The Mark of Zorro. Other recent acting credits include Louis Slotin Sonata (A Red Orchid), Bloody Bess: A Tale of Piracy and Revenge(Backstage Theatre), and Journey’s End (Griffin Theatre). During the day, Chris performs Shakespeare for high school students with A Crew of Patches. Chris recently made his debut as an adaptor with Lifeline Theatre’s Fall 2011 production of The Count of Monte Cristo. Chris studied acting at Columbia College and, when time permits, is a continuing student at Black Box Acting Studio.

Brandon Bruce (Director, Co-Adaptor, Co-Fight Chreographer) is honored to be directing his first production at Strawdog, capping his first season as Artistic Director. As Artistic Director of BackStage Theatre, Brandon directed the Jeff Award-winning production of The Skin of Our Teeth, The Rul�ing Class, Terra Nova, and the new work De�De�nise Druczweski’s Inferno. Aly Renee Amidei (Makeup, Mask & Hair Designer) is pleased to be working with our shiny new artistic director as the mask, makeup, and hair designer. A proud Straw-dog ensemble member since 2003, Aly has designed costumes on many shows including Petrified Forest, Marathon 33, De�tective Story, R.U.R., Good Soul of Szechuan, Red Noses, Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya, and Tooth of Crime. She was nominated for a Jeff Award for her Hair and Makeup Design on Master and Margarita. She is also the Artistic Director of WildClaw Theatre, dedicated to bringing horror to the stage. In addition to doing Wildclaw’s costumes and makeup for the recent production of Kill Me, her adaptation of J. Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla premiered at the DCA Storefront Theatre in January of 2011. She will be designing costumes and makeup for Wildclaw’s The Life of Death in the fall of 2012 at the DCA Storefront. She has also designed for Lifeline, Seanachai, Lakeside Shakespeare, Artistic Home, and House Theatre. Aly is the Costume and Makeup Coordinator for the College of Dupage.

Scott T. Barsotti (Movement Director) is a playwright and performer originally from Pittsburgh, PA. He’s directed movement for many shows, but this is the second time he’s had a sweet title to prove it. He recently directed movement for WildClaw Theatre’s production of his play, Kill Me. Scott’s original plays have been seen nationwide and include The Revenants, Kill Me, Jet Black, Chevrolet, Brewed, McMeekin Finds Out, and Your Teacher is Out Today; his adapta-tion of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Body Snatcher will receive its world premiere this fall at Brisbane Arts Theatre in Queensland, Australia; in 2013, Scott will be adapting Geoffrey Hayes’ The Mystery of the Pirate Ghost for Lifeline Theatre’s KidSeries; also in 2013, Brewed will be co-produced by The Ruckus and Tympanic Theatre Company. As an actor, Scott has appeared with WildClaw Theatre, Lifeline Theatre, Curious Theatre Branch, The Mammals, WNEP Theater, Col-laboraction, Pavement Group, and Victory

Anna is an ensemble member of WildClaw, where she gets to explore scary things. She welcomes you to her delicious creepy late-night, Strangers & Strangerers, in Hugen Hall in May. Liz Fiala (Assistant Stage Manager) proudly hails from St. Louis, Missouri, and is currently a stage management major at The Theatre School at DePaul University. Her past credits at The Theatre School include Loose Knit (Stage Manager), A Raisin in the Sun (Asst. Stage Manager), Haroun and the Sea of Stories (Asst. Stage Manager), Hedda Gabler (Stage Manager), Medea (Asst. Stage Manager), Intimate Apparel (Stage Manager), and Nancy Drew (Asst. Stage Manager). Kyle has previously collaborated with several theatres around town on media designs including WildClaw Theatre, Halcyon Theatre, Emerald City Theatre, Barrel of Monkeys and here at Strawdog Theatre Company where he has been an ensemble member since 2000. assisted on Master and Margarita last sea-son. Jordan has been designing and as-sisting with lots of folks around town like Theatre Seven, Sideshow, The Hypocrites, and Matter Dance. Recent credits include: Naked Molerat Gets Dressed, How to Survive a Fairy Tale (both at Lifeline), and The Spirit Play (Strange Tree Group).

Dan Laushman (Master Electrician) though from a family of biologists and botanists, Dan decided spending his days in dark theaters sounded like a good path. Having just re-turned from the national tour of My Fair Lady, Dan is thrilled to be back with Strawdog Theater for their end-of-the-season show.

Joanna Melville* (Costume Designer) is working on her fifth show at Strawdog and her first as an ensemble member. She also freelances around town. Her bio is short because she is in the midst of sewing the costumes. She hopes that you enjoy the show.

Lindsey Miller (Stage Manager) is glad to be returning to Strawdog, where she stage managed Conquest of the South Pole last season. She is very proud to be an ensemble member at BackStage Theatre, where she most recently stage managed Play About the Baby. Other productions include Ironmistress (Oracle), The Fever Chart (Eclipse), Wuthering Heights (Lifeline), and The Ring Cycle (Building Stage). Next she will be working on BackStage’s production of A Scent of Flowers.

Mary O’Dowd (Props Designer) is honored to work here at Strawdog. Favorite prop/set dressing credits include The Price, Bus Stop, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Raven Theatre); Ballad of the Sad Cafe (Signal); Enchanted April (Theatre of Western Springs); and Inside Studio 180, a weekly cable series about the arts (College of DuPage). A Jeff-nominated actress, Mary is an artistic associate at Signal Ensemble Theatre. She is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

Mike Przygoda* (Sound Designer) has been bowing vibraphones and secretly marry-ing into royalty since high school. He is a company member at Strawdog Theatre as well as Barrel Of Monkeys. Thanks to Choppy at Massimo Mallets for the equipment!

Patrick Rybarczyk* (Managing Director) has worked in administrative roles with The Goodman, Court Theatre and Chicago Shakespeare. Chicago stage credits include work with Ulysses Theatre Com-pany, Bailiwick Repertory, and Timeline Theatre. Favorite roles include Mitchell Garabedian, in the premiere of Sin: A Cardinal Deposed in both the Chicago and Boston casts, Judas in Corpus Christi (Jeff Citation & After Dark Award: Ensemble), Frank O’Hara in Too Live As Variously As Possible and Felix Turner in The Normal Heart (After Dark Award: Performance). He appeared in the short film Telling Dad, directed the premiere of Katrina: State of Emergency, was a co-founding member of Ulysses Theatre Company and is an Artis-tic Associate with Pride Films and Plays.

Christine Scarfuto (Co-Adaptor) - is currently the Literary Fellow at Signature Theatre Company in New York. She has worked as a dramaturg with the Goodman Theatre, Playwrights Realm, Florida Studio Theatre, New Georges, Fusion Theatre, and Iowa Summer Rep. She recently graduated from the MFA Dramaturgy program at the University of Iowa, where she adapted and dramaturged productions of Antigone, Eurydice, and As You Like It, in additional to various new plays. She was on the 2010 Dramaturgy Debut panel at the Asso-ciation for Theater in Higher Education conference in Los Angeles, and is a script reader for the Public Theater and the Sundance Theatre Lab. She hails from the picturesque state of New Jersey.

Joe Schermoly (Scenic Designer) is a set designer, technical director and painter and is happy to be returning to Strawdog for this exciting production. His design work has been seen around Chicago at Griffin Theatre (Punk Rock, No More Dead Dogs, Port, Constant Wife), Strawdog Theatre (Master and Margarita, Richard III), Lifeline Theatre (The Count of Monte Cristo), Sideshow Theatre (The Ugly One) and more. He has also designed and built shows in London for The Finborough, Bush and Gate theatres among others.
