Message from the head of School

welcome to Dwight-Englewood School. commitment, confidence, courage, curiosity, and purpose—these enduring values and fundamental principles of our school have shaped our culture and have guided generations of faculty, students, parents, and administrators. they are palpable everywhere, deeply embedded, and thoroughly define Dwight-Englewood’s distinctive environ-ment—one that is serious, challenging, and caring all at once. here, at every level, from pre-school through grade twelve, students gain critical skills, seek excellence, ignite their passions, and develop the habit of lifelong learning. they become whole persons, with an educational experience rooted in tradition but aimed at innovation. Each day, i take enormous pleasure and pride in witnessing the collaborative learning experiences that are going on in classrooms. there is a satisfying buzz that emanates from the highly inter-active and conversational activity of students and teachers working together. whether it happens around our harkness tables, in a one-to-one computing environment, or in our student-gathering areas around campus, at Dwight-Englewood School, both in and out of the classroom, such conversation abounds. On stage and on the playing fields, in the library and dining halls, on field trips, and even in casual hallway exchanges, learning is always present, active, and even joyful. here, in our caring community, we listen carefully, we question probingly, we speak respectfully, we embrace diverse opinions and cultural perspectives, we encourage new ideas and challenge old ones, and we enjoy each other’s company. we invite you and your family to enter into this conversation and look forward to your sharing time with us on campus. rodney v. Our community of learners

hands-on learning is at the heart of the Dwight-Englewood School educational experience. in the lower School, we help students make connections among disciplines that spark creative thinking. in the transitional Middle School years, we focus on critical thinking, problem solving, and study skills, with emphasis on reading, writing, and formal oral presentation. the upper School challenges students to advance these skills within a classical college-preparatory program. Our faculty of highly trained teachers—thinkers and scholars who have largely been with the school for more than 0 years—fosters an academically challenging environment marked by prob-lem solving and independent thinking. teachers and principals instill a lifelong passion for learning and collaborate to provide a seamless transition from one division to the next. Our very favorable student/faculty ratio of : ensures that individual attention is always available. in the lower School, more than 0 teachers serve 0 students. Each homeroom teacher advances the natural curiosity of students through a hands-on curriculum that promotes learning. in the Middle School, 0 teachers instruct 0 students. beginning in the sixth grade, students learn the organizational, academic, and personal skills needed to meet the demands of the upper School’s rigorous college-preparatory program. teachers work collaboratively across four major areas—English, social studies, math, and science—to provide a core educational experience infused with an interdisciplinary spirit. in the upper School, faculty members engage 0 students. teachers challenge students through a curriculum that includes core English, history, world-language, integrated math and science as well as arts courses. Our stimulating academic offerings, combined with athletics and cocurricular activities, encourage students to become confident adults, secure in their ability to succeed in a complex world.

habitat for learning

“we use technology as a tool that helps our students see the world differently. Dwight-Englewood School students use sophisticated tools throughout the curriculum to tackle complex problems that extend far beyond the traditional world of pencil and paper.” – trevor Shaw, Director of Academic technology

At Dwight-Englewood School, we recognize that campus architecture is a significant factor in shaping the overall experience of our students. Our 0-acre campus features learning spaces that reflect the collaborative model of our community. combining traditional and contemporary architecture with current technology, we provide students with a stimulating setting for their pursuits. Drapkin hall, our lower School building, is a colorful, light-filled space with its own cafeteria, gymnasium, library, science exploratorium, and centro Español for the study of Spanish. the newly renovated umpleby hall houses our Middle School classrooms. the majority of upper School classes take place in leggett hall, klein campus center, or the solar-powered pope Science hall. visual-arts courses are mostly grouped in the Swartley Arts center. this facility includes studios for drawing and painting, photography and video production, and ceramics. there is also a classroom dedicated to lower School Students. A teaching gallery exhibiting work by students, faculty, and other artists ensures that something interesting is always on view. upper and Middle School students can take advantage of the great resources of the imperatore library, which houses more than 0,000 volumes, along with wireless computer access and student study spaces, including the bogo room, a purposely designed area for group study. Adjacent to the library are technology labs and world-language classrooms. physical-education classes take place in the Modell’s Sports complex, which features two gyms, along with a weight-training room and an aerobics studio. Additionally, students and sports teams use leggett field, graham field, and Solomon field for their classes and games. the hub of Dwight-Englewood School is undeniably the klein campus center. this newest facility houses the khubani performing Arts center, the wharton-lessin Dining hall, Schenck & hajjar Auditoriums, the school store, and the school snack bar, known as the “coop.” incorporated into the design are spacious sitting areas that allow students to socialize and collaborate on projects. we encourage you to visit our campus.

cultivating community

to create a true community of learners, we require every student to take ownership of his or her learning, both in and out of the classroom. At Dwight-Englewood School, you will become something of an adventurer as you follow your passions. you will form new and expansive relation-ships with peers and teachers. you will develop a broader perspective and a true appreciation for diversity. Our students enjoy a rare opportunity to learn about different cultures, lifestyles, and beliefs, yet the shared values of our community—honesty, responsibility, respect, judgment, commitment, and courage—bring us together. we introduce these values in preschool and ask students to reconfirm them as they grow older. Our faculty embodies these values in their roles as teachers, coaches, and advisors. the upper School expands on these values in a 0th-grade ethics course and in the community-service project that all students must complete before graduation. Shared values enable our diverse community to learn, grow, and laugh together. we celebrate the commitment to our school during Spirit week. we express gratitude for the abundance we enjoy during our thanksgiving celebration. we show our respect for the planet on Earth Day. whether it is the lower School’s puppet parade, Middle School’s living wax Museum, or upper School’s M.A.g.i.c. fundraising intramural games, we constantly look for opportunities and outlets to celebrate the vitality of who we are.

the right Start

lower School

Dwight-Englewood School instills a lifelong love of learning right from the beginning. the nurturing environment of our lower School, along with its age-appropriate curriculum, allows students to pursue their natural curiosity and move along a path of self-discovery. preschool classrooms are child-centered, interdisciplinary in approach, and organized around projects and themes. the development of social relationships and individual growth is constantly stressed through our use of the “responsive classroom.” A child’s typical day in the lower School will be structured around a homeroom-specialist model in which the homeroom teacher instructs the students in the core academic subjects of read-ing, writing, and mathematics. Students work with specialist teachers in the areas of Spanish, art, library, technology, music, and physical education. in grades one through five, children are taught analytical and critical thinking through an inter-disciplinary curriculum. Social-studies themes such as Shelter, first Americans, colonial America, and the American revolution are enriched with hands-on activities and field trips. Studies have shown that elementary students are the most receptive foreign-language learners, and we introduce our world-language program at the beginning of the student’s experience. Our language classes, conducted almost entirely in Spanish and featuring game-playing, songs, and first-person storytelling, teach grammar and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. As a Dwight-Englewood School parent, your participation in your child’s lower School experience will be valued. with the parents’ Association providing many opportunities for family involvement, you can participate in a variety of ways and levels of commitment.

Seeking Excellence

the Middle School focuses on the education of the whole child. we aim to provide a balance between skills instruction and intellectual vigor, content and process, independent work and collaboration, and self-reflection and global awareness. we begin by strengthening critical learning skills in English, mathematics, social studies, and science. Our cluster teams of teachers develop a firm understanding of the individual needs of each student and work in close collab-oration to achieve the most effective strategies for learning success. the Middle School academic experience is clustered around three major themes: patterns and perceptions in grade , worldwide weavers in grade , and the courage of Our convictions in grade . As a Middle School student, your curriculum will also include choice of either french or Spanish, along with the choice of two years of latin; earth and life science; and studio art, drama, bell choir, chorus, or orchestra. in th and th grade, you may have the opportunity to choose among Discovery classes designed to pique your interests or strengthen your passions. Students may also take advanced mathematics. Middle School projects such as the writer’s work-shop, living wax Museum, Dream Speeches, and the poetry festival enhance reading, writing, and public-speaking skills. All students receive a tablet pc, which allows them to electronically access much of their course content. the campus also provides wireless network access and One-click classrooms. computer use is fully integrated into the curriculum, allowing students to constantly refine and expand their technology skills. Most importantly, students use technology to build their understanding of complex academic concepts, particularly in math and science. by educating the whole child, we help adolescents express their individuality and teach them to relate to peers and adults in constructive ways. teachers act as trusted guides, athletic coaches, and cocurricular advisors. they help students sort out complicated developmental questions that can be so confusing to adolescents. Our rich program of cocurricular activities also helps foster character development. Students can participate in intramural and interscholastic sports such as soccer, track, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, and tennis, as well as softball, field hockey, and volleyball (for girls). Other cocurricular activities and clubs include student leadership oppor-tunities, our Middle School play/musical, our community-service organization, and the literary magazine. whether in arts, athletics, or academics, our Middle School students cultivate their emerging interests with the support of a wise and watchful community.

growing intellectually

in classes with an average enrollment of students, our upper School students receive the attention they need to prepare for college. their core courses in the humanities will include English, history, world languages, and fine arts. throughout the curriculum, we integrate tech- nology so that students discover how to use software to gain a greater understanding of important concepts. honors and Advanced placement options are available in most subjects. courses ranging from Masters of Modernism, to issues in American law, to Discrete Math-ematics, to bioethics offer rich opportunities for intellectual growth and exploration. A student’s advisor working closely with the grade-level deans help ensure that the best choices are made and that academic goals are met. After two years of required courses, students can assume more autonomy, directing their own interests and abilities with continued close advising. As a Dwight-Englewood School student, you will occasionally be able to select one-on-one classes and pursue independent study with a faculty member or with mentors who are distinguished in their professional careers. your academic experience may culminate with Senior focus, a full-year thesis program that requires research, fieldwork, a portfolio, and an academic presentation. Sample topics that students have explored include the following: role of the roman catholic church in contemporary Spanish politics; Effect of ginseng in treating pediatric AiDS; and Authenticity of Authorship in Shakespeare’s body of work. we always encourage students to integrate knowledge from many different and sometimes surprising sources, directing them toward a path of lifelong learning. An ethics component is integrated into many of our courses, along with a dedicated ethics seminar in the sophomore year. community service required throughout the upper School and small-group advising also offer opportunities for students to explore and refine personal values. Dwight-Englewood School simulates an environment students will encounter as adults. learning is a never-ending process characterized by inquiry, discussion, and openness to other viewpoints. Our graduates develop an authentic voice and a record of achievement that gives them the confi-dence to excel in college and beyond.

placing the Arts center Stage

A structured involvement in the arts unleashes the kind of creativity that can invigorate one’s entire learning experience. Studying the arts can also help a student grasp mathematical and visual concepts, develop critical literacy, and see patterns across academic disciplines. At Dwight-Englewood School, the arts play an important role from prekindergarten through grade twelve. All lower School students learn how to listen to and create music. One activity that defines the lower School experience is the creating Original Opera program, in which all fifth-graders participate. Additionally, our studio-art program offers children the opportunity to explore many forms of visual art. Students work from both their own imagination and direct observation. by starting out early in life making art, our students ignite a lifelong love for the arts. At the Middle School level, drama, music, and studio art challenge students to become confident and imaginative innovators. this growth continues in the upper School, where a program such as Jazz rock helps aspiring singers and musicians select the right composition to showcase their talents. in the upper School, students can choose from courses in studio art, sculpture, ceramics, and photography/video production; theater courses that explore acting technique, writing for the stage, production, and the technical arts; and music courses in orchestra and chamber ensembles, chorus, stage band, or handbell choir. One of the most exciting aspects of Dwight-Englewood’s arts program is that so many of our instructors boast significant professional experience. Many are active on broadway, play in musical ensembles, or pursue visual-arts careers. by sharing their real-world experience with students, our teachers serve to inspire and to prepare a new guard made up both of people who make art and those who deeply appreciate it.

“the greatest thing about Dwight-Englewood School is that students can discover their passions and thrive in more than one area.” – Matthew Schukis, Middle and upper School Music teacher and varsity Softball coach

honoring the Scholar-Athlete

*Middle School only

the spirit of the scholar-athlete—those students who are equally achieving in academics and athletics—permeates our school culture. Our coaches, most of whom are academic faculty, help students become strong team players and effective leaders—both on the field and in the classroom. in this way, students develop character as much as physical skill. we teach the concept of good sportsmanship beginning in the lower School, where young students develop gross motor skills and third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders enjoy co-ed intramural soccer, basketball, and baseball games. in the Middle School, in addition to a variety of sports, we introduce interscholastic competition. physical education in the upper School includes four years of coursework in lifetime fitness and two years of health. Sports at the Middle and upper School include the following:

learning beyond the classroom

the School offers an extensive variety of cocurricular activities in such areas as student leader-ship, publications, the arts, interscholastic athletics, special interest clubs, and volunteer work. these activities complement the academic program and serve to enrich student life at Dwight-Englewood School, and we urge all students to take part in those areas that are of interest. Students try out for athletic teams; membership in clubs is open to all students. new activities are constantly being formed and others dropped in response to student interest.

the habit of cocurricular involvement begins in the lower School, where students engage in intramural sports, beginning in third grade, as well as in a third-through-fifth grade chorus and string program. lower School children at all grade levels may also engage in enrichment classes through D-E Explorers, an after-school program. in Middle School, cocurricular activities include continental Math league, cultural Diversity club, Debate club, Drawing club, Environmental Action club, Makers of tomorrow (a community-service organization), The Dwightee (Middle School newspaper), Middle School play/Musical, Science club, Stage crew, and Student leadership. in the upper School, the cocurricular opportunities expand exponentially (see facing page). upper School students may also elect to take advantage of learning experiences in Europe and Asia. Many D-E students have spent a month studying at the university of Salamanca in Spain, whereas others have participated in School trips to france, italy and india.

we are dedicated to providing an environment that promotes learning in diverse ways about a complex, dynamic world. we view cocurricular involvement as opportunities for students to grow personally and develop critical leadership skills. in the structure of our upper School schedule, we allow students to choose to be engaged in many areas of interest such as the following:

“through my participation in service activities like AiDS Awareness, i knew i was growing in my own personal leadership skills while contributing to the greater community beyond Dwight-Englewood.” – Julia Schneider ’0, university of chicago

with nearly 0,000 graduates living in the united States and abroad, what distinguishes our alumni is their sense of community and caring, along with the strong work ethic they bring to their endeavors. Many graduates are leaders in their fields. in addition to an Olympic athlete and a former u.S. Secretary of State, our alumni include broadcast executives and broadway producers, foundation and museum directors, economists and college professors, writers and editors, actors and singers, as well as physicians and surgeons. One thread that runs through the Dwight-Englewood School educational experience is the importance of giving back to the community over one’s lifetime. Many of our graduates work with their communities to help bring about change in the lives of others.
