Dear Student,I hope you enjoy reading about the opportunities DYCA can offer you.

We have designed our sixth form offer completely around your aspirations for the future. We

know that now, more than ever, students need to organise their sixth form study in order to

prepare for specific university courses and careers. Our sixth form curriculum is organised in a

way that will help you begin to think about the future beyond sixth form and we will help you

become an independent learner and role model, inspiring our younger students and working

alongside our staff.

Our students have unique facilities and access to the very latest resources and in return they

contribute to the development of younger students, the Academy and community life, through

a close working partnership with staff and local businesses.

DYCA is not a traditional school. It is a 21st century learning environment for young adults

that bridges the divide between education, business and industry. Our students can expect to

be studying and working alongside community leaders, academics, business executives and

leaders in industry. Coming into the DYCA Sixth Form will be demanding but rewarding and

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous pre-universityprogramme of academic study. It is accepted for admission to universities worldwide and isuniversally well-received by employers who value the diversity of skills that students learn.

Theory of KnowledgeTOK looks at the nature of knowledge itself. Youwill think about how knowledge is arrived at invarious academic subjects, what the approachesused in these subjects have in common and whatthe differences are between them. Thefundamental question of TOK is: “how do weknow that?”.

Some examples of knowledge questions addressedon the course are:

• When should we question common sense?

• Do we construct reality or do we recognise it?

• Can a machine be said to know something?

Extended EssayThis gives you the opportunity to work one-to-one with a subjectsupervisor on a subject of your choice to produce an extended piece ofwriting based on your interests, your strengths on the DiplomaProgramme, and your aspirations for university.

Examples of recent essay titles from DYCA students include:

• How has the design and architecture of St. Peter's Square impactedon the modern world? (Visual Arts)

• How can the mechanism of the catalase catalysed decompositionof hydrogen peroxide be determined through the formation of arate equation? (Chemistry)

• How is the theme of sacrifice explored in C.S. Lewis' The Lion, TheWitch and the Wardrobe? (English)

Creativity, Action and ServiceCAS offers you the opportunity to learn outside the classroom environment as you arrange and lead a number ofcreative, physical- and community-based projects that demonstrate your organisational, time management andreflective skills.

Examples of CAS projects enjoyed by previous students include:

• Designing a website for a local charity.

• Writing and organising the Academy newspaper.

• Planning and leading local sport events for primary schools.

• Mentoring younger students through the Reading Leaders programme.

The IBCC allows you to pursue a career-related pathway leading to higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.The programme’s three-part framework comprises the academic challenge of at least two Diploma Programme courses,Career-related Learning that provides practical, real-world approaches to learning, and the distinctive IBCC Core whichhelps you to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

Approaches to LearningATL is designed to develop life-skills for use in the workplace. It is intended to develop students’ analyticalthinking, intercultural understanding, communication, and personal development. ATL aims to challengestudents to draw on personal resources and skills to engage critically with the world around them.

Community and ServiceC&S establishes a relationship between students and their community in a way that emphasises mutualbenefit. The programme requires students to identify a community need and then plan to improve orhelp that situation. C&S is an opportunity for students to expand their life skills and take responsibilityfor their immediate environment.

Reflective ProjectThe Reflective Project is an in-depth body of work produced over an extended period and submittedtowards the end of the course. It is designed to draw together key elements of a student’s wider schemeof study. The Reflective Project requires students to identify, analyse, critically discuss and evaluate anethical dimension of an issue stemming from their career-related studies.

Language DevelopmentLanguage Development is designed to ensure that all students are exposed to a second language (eitherFrench or Spanish) in a way that will assist and further their understanding of the wider world. LanguageDevelopment aims to provide students with the necessary skills and intercultural understanding toenable them to communicate in an environment where the language studied is spoken.

What is the Career Academy programme?The two year Career Academy programme is for DYCA IBDP & IBCC students studying Business & Management and issupported by employers from the private and public sectors across the Leeds region.

Upon joining our Career Academy you will benefit from:

� Support for your learning, directly assisting you to improve your Business & Management grade

� A six-week paid internship with a local employer during the summer between lower and upper 6th years

� Special employer-led lectures, seminars and company visits

� One-to-one mentoring by an experienced employee volunteer

� Networking opportunities with other Career Academy students around the UK.

What qualifications do Career Academy students achieve?As a Career Academy student you will follow a structured programme of paid internships; mentoring and motivationallectures; and workshops alongside IB Business & Management. The programme is designed to give you the workexperience and skills you need to be able to perform more effectively in the world of work.

What are the benefits of the programme?Career Academy helps you to achieve your full potential. Hand in hand with your qualifications and workplaceexperience, as a Career Academy student, you will grow in confidence and develop life skills such as time management,interview techniques, and public speaking.

Tutor SystemOur commitment to academic excellence is reflectedin our tutoring and support provision. You will beguided through your sixth form experience by adedicated tutor who will ensure that you have theskills and opportunities to succeed. Daily tutorsessions mean you have regular, close, contact withyour tutor and tutor group, building positive andsupportive relationships. Our aim is to nurture anddevelop confident, independent learners.

Tutor sessions are a key element of your sixth formjourney, giving you a forum to discuss your academicprogress with a tutor who knows you and to interactwith your fellow students in a stimulatingenvironment. You will be guided through the processof researching and deciding on your educational andcareer paths, allowing you to make an informeddecision about your future. Sixth form is a challengingand exciting experience and we aim to make it apositive and rewarding one for all our students.



ExpectationsFrom the minute that you step through the doors at the DYCA, you can expect to be welcomed as a responsible independent learner.All our students are expected to be professional in their manner and courteous to everyone within the Academy as a positive rolemodel for all.

Entry Requirements5 GCSEs (A*-C) including English and Maths. There are also subject specific requirements for some IBDP courses in order to give youthe best chance of success. Please see the UCAS Progress website or the subject pages on our school website for details.

Dress CodeThe Academy requires that all sixth form students attend in smart, formal business dress. The following is a guide as to which garmentsare acceptable and which are not permitted.
