To fill its hotelsand villas,S a i n t

Barthélemy must pro-mote itself worldwide.Which explains why theisland’s tourism profes-sionals are focusing onLatin and South Ameri-

ca. For the past severalyears, this has been con-sidered the most impor-tant market to target, inaddition to the UnitedStates and Europe. Forupscale tourists fromBrazil, Argentina, orChili, for example,Saint Barth is muchcloser than MauritiusIsland or the Seychelles. And the austral wintermakes Saint Barthélemy

attractive while NewYorkers and Parisiansare enjoying their sum-mer months. This makesthe island a perfectyear-round destinationfor visitors from Latinand South America. Tohelp develop that mar-ket, a delegation fromSaint Barth attended thelarge, global Travel

Week in Sao Paulo, onApril 10-13 with repre-sentatives from the Ter-ritorial Tourist Commit-tee (CTTSB) as well asEden Rock, Toiny, Islede France, Guanahani,Sereno, and Christopherhotels, and St BarthProperties. They metwith numerous travelagents and tour opera-tors, who can, in turn, promote the island to

their clients. Theisland’s presence atTravel Week was veryuseful, judges AnneDentel, vice president ofthe tourism committee:“We know that it willbe fruitful,” sheobserves. “The firsttime I attended thisevent, no one knewwhere Saint Barthélemy

was and they had noidea how to get here.Today, not only doeseverybody know aboutus, but everybody wantsto promote us as well.”Dentel also points outthat access to the Brazil-ian market was facilitat-ed by direct flights onCopa Airlines fromSaint Martin to Panama,a hub which serves allof South America. After

the event in Brazil,Dentel visited Argenti-na, during two “sellschools” organized inBuenos Aires under theaegis of Atout France. In tourism jargon, these“sell schools” teachtravel agents everythingthey need to know abouta destination: its hotels, restaurants, activities,

etc. Then the higher-endagencies can sell thedestination of SaintBarth to their clients:“Argentineans, likeChileans, are particular-ly interested in the low-er prices during thesummer season,” con-firms Dentel.

Elected two years ago,the lovely Miss SaintBarth, Tifany Lédée,maintains her title for afew more months. OnSaturday, August 11, thesecond edition of thecompetition created bythe Miss Saint BarthAssociation will takeplace with special guestsChristelle Roca, whowas elected nationalMiss Prestige 2012, andChristiane Lillio, MissFrance 1968 and presi-dent of the national MissPrestige committee, which is run byGeneviève De Fontanay. In December 2013, thenew Miss Saint Barthwill participate innational competition forMiss Prestige 2014.Since April 18, candi-dates who hope to fol-low in Lédée’s footstepshave been able to enroll

in the Miss Saint Barth2012/2013 competitionby completing the regis-tration form, which canbe picked up at thetourist office in Gustaviathrough July 10, asStéphane Lanson, presi-dent of the Miss SaintBarth Association, intends to limit the num-ber of candidates. All ofthe Miss Saint Barthcandidates must respectthe criteria set by thenational Miss Prestigecommittee, which meansthey must be bornbetween November 1,1989 and November 1,1995, be at least 5’5”tall, not have any chil-dren, not be married ordivorced, and not haveany tattoos or piercings(or be able to coverthem). Miss Saint-Barth2012/2013 will replaceTifany Lédée, a finalistcrowned sixth runner upin the national Miss

Prestige event lastDecember. “It has beena wonderful experi-ence,” confirms Lédée,with a smile. “The effortis worth it and we havebeen having a greattime,” she adds. Anotherplus for Lédée, whowants to become anesthetician, is that shehas started to create asolid list of contactsthanks to the many peo-ple she has met since thecompetition. And if acareer as a model isanother possibility, it is

thanks to the advice ofStéphane Lanson whoonce ran a modelingagency in Paris, and is agood judge of talent:“Because Tifany studieddance, she is very grace-ful on stage. And she isvery photogenic. She hasa lot going for her.” ForMiss Saint-Barth2011/2012, the adven-ture is far from over.

INTERNET: AN ADDITIONALFIBER-OPTIC CABLEBETWEEN GUSTAVIAAND LORIENT

The Collectivity hopes toinstall its own fiber-opticcable between the sub-scriber connection nodes(SCN) that run from Gus-tavia to Lorient, in addi-tion to the cable alreadyinstalled by the telecom-munications company,Orange. The Collectivity'sgoal is to rent its owncable to other Internetproviders on the island, such as Dauphin Telecomand Mediaserv. This proj-ect, once completed, would allow the wind-ward side of the island, which depends on theSCN in Lorient, to havebetter Internet service viathe steady, high-speedconnection assured byfiber-optic technology.Cable troughs havealready been installedbetween Gustavia andLorient to house the fiber-optic cable, but the Col-lectivity has yet to issuethe RFP for bids on thecompletion of the project.
