Ensuring the success of your recycling program depends on a few key elements; most importantly assistance from employees and/or residents. Here are a few pointers to get you started in the right direction: Post signage to remind employees and/or residents to recycle specific items (cardboard, paper, etc.). Communication is essential! Newsletters and flyers also reinforce the message. Placement of recycling containers next to trash containers increases the chances of getting more recyclables into the correct container. Emptying recycling containers into the proper recycling bin will ensure that your business or multi-family residential dwelling is doing their part to lower costs and reduce landfill waste. California Assembly Bill 341 mandates businesses and public entities, generating four (4) cubic yards of trash or more and multi-family residential dwellings with five (5) or more units, to establish and maintain recycling service. Recycling not only conserves our natural resources but can save money by reducing waste disposal costs. Burrtec’s staff can assist in selecting the appropriate recycling service level, along with the necessary education and outreach to residents and managerial staff. Call our Customer Service Department today to schedule a complimentary waste and recycling assessment. Removal of materials from a bin may increase the cost of collection services. Materials placed in a recycling bin have a value that is used to offset collection and processing costs. When a scavenger breaks the law and removes those materials they are also removing any value associated with the recycling program, which ultimately affects costs. If you see a scavenger, do not approach them! Report illegal activity to local law enforcement. Also, please help us help you. Do not give permission to scavengers to take recyclables. Organics Recycling RequirementsCalifornia Assembly Bill 1826, Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling, required businesses, public entities, including multi-family residential dwellings (five or more units), generating 4-cubic yards or more of organics to establish and maintain commercial organics recycling service as of January 1, 2017. Multi-family dwellings organics diversion is specific to green waste only (not food waste).

The State requirements specify that applicable business waste generators do the following:

• Separate organic waste from other waste and participate in a waste recycling service that includes collection and recycling of organic waste.

• Recycle their organic waste on site, or self-haul their organic waste off-site for recycling.

• Subscribe to an organic waste recycling service that may include mixed waste processing that specifically recycles organic waste.

• Donate food to a food bank, or food rescue as appropriate. For food rescue information contact Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County at (909) 723-1581.

Organic waste means food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, and non-hazardous wood waste.
