= Born to Guyanese mixed-raced parents, British-born Jonathan Phang is a food writer, broadcaster and author of The Pepperpot Club - A celebration of Caribbean Cuisine. On television Jonathan was a judge of the first three series of Britain's Next Top Model. He has cooked on shows such as Market Kitchen, Ready Steady Cook, What's Cooking and Saturdays with James Martin. He hosted his own series Caribbean Cookbook, Food Network and Gourmet Train for Travel Channel. Jonathan currently reads the news for Radio Diva and is a TV Reviewer for Gaby Roslin on BBC London. In his spare time Jonathan is a celebrant and conducts weddings and funerals. He’ll be talking to us about his Chinese heritage and how this has shaped his unique sense of identity. John Mair was born in British Guiana. He attended Sacred Heart RC School and won the Demerara Scholarship (top in the Colony) in 1961. His family then migrated to the UK. John attended the LSE, the University of Sussex and the University of Leeds. He has worked as a producer for the BBC, ITV, Channel Four and GTV in Guyana. In recent years, he has edited 25 books on journalism: the latest two, VS Naipaul: the Legacy and Anti-Social Media? were published in October 2018. John made six short films in Georgetown and Beijing on the Chinese Guyanese (for the Government of Guyana in 2013), and will be showing two of these at Guyana SPEAKS. Scott Ting-A-Kee has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Guyana. He is the recipient of the Joyce Adler Prize for 'Best Graduating Student in Literature' from the University of Guyana, 2016. He has worked as a teacher and as an Assistant Examiner for CAPE Literatures in English. He is passionate about the interdisciplinary study of literature and comparisons between the literature of the East and West. His first novella, Red Hibiscus was published by Way Wive Wordz earlier this year and will form the basis of his talk. Gregory Ying is a Guyanese of Chinese ancestry who is currently living in the UK. He was born in then British Guiana in 1963 and lived there until 1977. Whilst in Guyana he attended both Queen’s College and Bishop’s High School. In 1977 he emigrated to the UK, completing his schooling in Croydon and his further education in Swansea, Wales. In 2000 he went to China with VSO – Voluntary Service Overseas. He ended up staying there, working with the British Council, until 2017. Gregory will be sharing insights into the research he conducted on his family’s connection to China.
