Our fundraising campaign for The Meserani Project is finally over and there
are only a few days left before we fly out to Africa – argh! It’s crazy to think
we’re going so soon.
We fly from Durham Tees Valley Airport at 10:05 on Monday 14 July,
landing in Amsterdam at 12.25 local time. We then spend 9 hours in
Amsterdam airport before boarding our flight to Nairobi at 21.00 (landing
at 6.25 local time). It’s an early start on 31 July as we fly from Nairobi at
8.15 before landing finally on Teesside at 21.50!
We’ve summed up the whole EAE 14 experience (so far!) in this newsletter,
with a final word before our flight from each of us.
Don’t miss us too much; we’ll be back before you know it!

Summaries of the final fundraising events for The Meserani Project (Charity no.
1135670) organised by the team.
Let’s take a look:
THE KILI TOPPING CHALLENGE
Sat 24 May 2014
Despite the horrendous weather conditions,
we had an excellent number of participants
taking part in our most challenging
fundraising event yet.
The team battled the elements and put
themselves through their paces – achieving
lots of personal goals along the way.
Thank you and well done to everyone who
took on the Kili Topping Challenge – shall we
do it all again next year!?

OUR LAST EVENT
Sat 14 June 2014
That’s a wrap! Our
fundraising campaign for
The Meserani Project came
to a spectacular close at
our final event held at the
Longlands Club,
Middlesbrough. With pie &
peas, raffle, bar and some
top music all night, it was
the perfect way to
celebrate everyone’s
efforts in achieving our
goal of raising £3,000.
Despite the event clashing
with the first England game of the World Cup, it was great to see so many people
out before they headed off to watch the match later on.
Music was provided by Jordan Heaney of Release Events (details can be found later
in this newsletter) and Aunt Becky’s, Parliament Rd, Middlesbrough provided the pie
& peas for everyone – thank you to both Jordan and Becky for their support. Many
thanks also go to those people who provided raffle and tombola prizes.
AMOUNT RAISED: £256
So, in total, we have raised an amazing
£3,350
for The Meserani Project through our campaign!
Thank you to everyone who supported us.

BACK TO SCHOOL
In June, the team returned to primary school to work with Year 6 pupils on a special
work of art for Meserani Chini Primary School. Pupils at Acklam Whin created a
mural for one of the classrooms using an array of art materials and resources. The
project tied in with their theme for the term (African culture) and the pupils really
got to show off all they had learned. From pastel drawings to charcoal drawings to
handmade jewellery and masks, the mural really is a masterpiece!
In addition to the mural, pupils in Year 5 and 6 also took part in an assembly about
The Meserani Project. We compared Acklam Whin Primary School to schools and life
over in Tanzania and the pupils were really enthusiastic and involved throughout.
We will return to Acklam Whin in the autumn to update the pupils on what went on
during our trip and show them images and videos of the fantastic artwork taking
pride of place on the classroom wall.

TRIP HOODIES Thank you to Tom Chapman of Wonderful Ideas for Entertainment (WIFE) for organising
our trip hoodies – his help has been much appreciated! They will definitely keep us warm
on a cold African night.

Well, Africa is getting closer and closer and it still hasn’t hit me. I don’t
think I truly know what I’m getting myself into. I do know that some people
over in Africa are going to appreciate every single thing we do and I hope
to help change lives. There is no higher calling than that. I am well chuffed
with the amount of money raised – that is going to make a major impact.
Besides that, however, the thing I’m most excited about is seeing some of
the African wildlife on safari, especially elephants roaming the African
plains. I think that will be a fantastic experience as you don’t see that every
day. I need to get a move on with packing but besides that everything is
bought and money is changed.
I am going to be spending a lot of time with people from all over the world
in the coming months as I’m helping international students at university as
well as in Africa. I now have the chance to help people from around the
world! This is definitely what I want to continue doing.
In terms of other things, university is done for this year and 2014 is a big
one in general. I’ve got a lot planned. I can safely say I am living life to the
full and I think I will be proud of myself when I’m older and I look back at
my youth. I’m expecting Africa to have a major impact on my life. I also
hope I can keep smashing experiences and hope the coming years are as jam
packed as this one. I need to start planning for 2015 as I leave university!
But there’s time for that.
Over and out,
Dobson

I can't believe how hectic these last few weeks have been/ are
continuing to be... not only with EAE based things but with uni
and work too! In between raising a tremendous amount of
money for The Meserani Project and buying every mosquito
repellent available on the high street, I've also passed my degree!
It really has been a crazy few weeks- and I've loved every
second.
Obviously, I'm still as excited as ever to be going to Africa.
Trying out my head torch and new bag/chair (making myself
look like the biggest wally you've seen) has had me skipping
around my living room dancing and singing to The Circle of Life
like the most hyperactive 20 year old you've ever seen. I also
saw a dollar for the very first time and it's just all too much for
me to handle I think it might keel over with immense
excitement as I'm forgetting where I should be using
punctuation as I type this excruciatingly long sentence.
To sum up, I'm EXTREMELY excited to be part of this trip and
honoured to be spending it with 3 of the nicest guys I know.
We're going to have the time of our lives, I'm absolutely certain
of it!
Once again, we're ever so thankful for all your help and
support, we couldn't have done it without you!

Wow… This is it! There are now fewer days separating us from our
trip than are in the trip, scary times! This is going to be my last
message before we go, but of course we will try and get as much as
we can online while we are in Africa.
What’s happened since last time? We hosted our hugely successful
final event, which (in my opinion) went far better than we
imagined, considering England were playing on the same night.
I cannot express my immense pride at what the team are
achieving, but we could not have done it without the support of
everyone who has been involved with us, and of course Peter and
Diane Swan who have helped us so much - so a big thank you to
everyone!
Excitement is the main feeling running through me at the moment,
as well as frustration at having to wait just a couple more weeks, it
has come round ridiculously fast! I remember the day me and
James booked the flights like it was yesterday, and it all seemed
like a dream it was that far away.
All I have to say now is wish us luck, and of course keep checking in
on us when we begin our journey on 14th July!

You know, it still hasn’t really sunk in that I’m going to Africa again.
Really! It’s hard to believe that the ‘pipe dream’ we had over ago now is
ready to come into fruition. It’s happening!
I can’t explain how proud and humbled I’m feeling right now. Seeing how
everyone has got involved with our fundraising events – and enjoyed them!
– was amazing and made organising them all the more worthwhile. Yeah,
we were raising money for The Meserani Project but being able to have a
laugh with our friends, family, colleagues etc. at the same time made it
even better. So, thanks to all those who took part, you’re all legends –
thank you very much.
What about the EAE 14 team? They’re just ace and I’d like to thank them
for being so ace. Some people question why we use the term ‘team’ to refer
to ourselves but it’s the only word that fits. Everyone pulls their weight,
everyone pitches in and everyone has helped us to get to where we are
now. I just can’t wait to see how Chloe and Tom react to the whole Africa
experience (since they have never been before) as well as continuing with
Joe the Africa experience we began back in 2011. I’m so glad they’re as
nuts as me to want to go on this trip!
In other news, I have finished my second year at uni now which is a huge
relief – just waiting on my final results!
I hope everyone has a fantastic summer and I’ll see you in August –
although I don’t want to think that far ahead just yet!

ASANTE
SANA
With just weeks to go before we fly out to Africa, there are so many people we have
to thank for their help and support up until this point. If we named every single
person who has helped us in some shape or form then this newsletter would be at
least 100 pages long – please forgive us if we do not mention everyone individually!
PETER AND DIANE SWAN – Without their help, organising the trip would
have been virtually impossible. The support they have given us over the past
has been priceless and we can’t thank them enough for that. We’d also like to
thank them on behalf of the pupils, families and communities in Meserani for
doing what they do – and doing it so well.
OUR PARENTS AND FAMILIES – Thank you for supporting us every step
of the way and letting us embark on this adventure this summer. We promise
to behave and be safe!
VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORS AND DONATIONS – Big thanks to everyone
who has helped out/volunteered at/sponsored our fundraising events over the
past year. Reaching our £3,000 target would have been impossible without
your help!
