The Lower Howard’s Creek State Nature andHeritagePreserveisanimportanthistoricKentuckysite.Beforetheadventoftheindustrialrevolution,specifically the railroad, Lower Howard’s Creekwascentraltotheeconomyofthearea.Historicmills,factories,andquarriesriddledthebanksofthe fastmoving LowerHoward’sCreek. Our site contains manyantiquated aspects that arerepresentativeofwhatoncewas

inthearea.Various“slavewalls”criss-crossthe42acreproperty.Therearealsomanyold,weatheredbarns,includingonewithadecorative“barnquilt”onitsface.

Abandonedresidences,withmanyoftheircontentsscatteredabout,andadjacentcemeteries,combiningunmarkedgraveswiththemorerecentlydeceased,areaconstantreminderofthesite’srichpast.AnobscurehistoricroadonthesouthendofthepropertythatparallelstheKentuckyRiverremindsoneofthefashionablevehicleofthetime—thehorse.Agroveoflooserollbalesillustratesamorerecentlanduse.Butdespitethelonghistoryoftheland,oneshouldnotviewitasold,tired,andwornout; ithassomelifeleft inityet.AndthatiswheretheWinery

designentersintothehistoryofthesite. ThedesignforawineryandvineyardontheLowerHoward’sCreeksiteshouldpreserveandcelebratetheproperty’sheritage.Visitorstothewinerywillbeawareoftheformerlandusesandintriguedbytheremnantsofaremarkablepast.Acomplexandelegantwineryshouldbeacomplementtothefarm,insteadofreplacingit.Thesmall“quiltbarn”couldberestoredandusedasatoolshedorparkingforthetractor.Thefreestandingoldrockchimneycouldbecomeanattractivecenterpieceofapicnicgarden.Theslavewallscouldbeintegratedinto thedesignof the facilities toadd intigue. Theoldroadonthesouthernpropertylinecouldbemadeintoanaturetrail.Thecemeteriescouldbebeautifiedandsubtlycelebrated,insteadofhiddenfromview.Overall,visitorswillhaveaconscioussensitivitytothehistoricsite,whileenjoyingtheexpansiveviewsofthesurroundingarea.Inthisrespectitwillfeellikethewineryandvineyardshavebeenworkedintothesurroundinglandscapeinsteadofsimplybeingsuperimposeduponit.

Acommonproblemineverytypeofagriculture,includingviticulture,ispests.Insectandotherpestscancauseconsiderable losses tocropyields. Everyvineyard inKentuckyexperiences lossesdue topests toacertaindegree.Insectpestscanbetreatedwithpesticidesorothermorenaturalcontrolmethods,suchasNeemoil.However,nosprayscanbesuccessfullyappliedforthemammalandavianpests.ItappearsthatthevastmajorityofvineyardsinKentuckyhavethesamesolutiontothisproblem–netting.Netting,whetherblackorwhite,isoftendrapedovertherowsofgrapevinestopreventbirds,rabbits,raccoons,deer,andotherpestsfromdamagingthecrop.Themethodisverysuccessful,yethasitsdrawbacks.Theromanticappealthatoftendrawsvisitorsintoawineryandvineyardisgreatlyimpairedduetothenetting.Aviewoutintoarollinghillofwhitemeshjustsimplydoesnothavethesameappeal.Alsoworkingaroundthenettingcanbecomecumbersomeandfrustrating.Thecostofreplacingthenettingeveryfewyearsissignificantaswell. Withresearchandcommonsensetactics,IhavefoundmanynaturalpestcontrolmethodswhichIproposebe implemented into thedesign. Naturalpest controlmethodscan replacenetting. The importanceofexcludingtheuseofnettingatEagleRockWineryisamplifiedbytheweddingvenue.Reservingthesiteforweddingswilllikelybealargeportionoftheprofitmade,andanyhindrancetothisisdangerous.Onenaturalpestcontrolmethodproposedistheuseoffalconers.Falconryisanancientartthatisstillinpracticetoday.Falconersusetrainedbirdsofpreytocatchotherbirdsandsmallmammals.ThereisnothingespeciallyunnaturalaboutFalconryasthebirdisactinginaperfectlyinnateway.Enlistingavolunteerorpaidfalconertoflytheirbirdaroundthesiteseveraltimesbeforeharvesttimeandespeciallyduringharvesttimeisarguablythemosteffectivebirdandsmallmammalpestcontrolmethod.Thepestshaveadeeplyingrainedfearoftheirlongtimenaturalpredatorandwillmoveoutoftheareaiftheyhaverepeatedsightingsofit.Thereforeonlyafewpestswillfallpreybeforetheyallleavethearea(althoughthebirdscanalsobetrainedtosimplyharasswithoutattacking).Asecondpestcontrolmethodisakintothefirstexceptnofalconerisneeded.Hawkpercheswillbeinstalledonthebermswithinthevines.Thiswillgivelocalhawksameansto“guard”thevineyardsfromrabbitsandraccoons.Ifafoodsupplyispresenttheywilllikelycome,andifthefoodsupplyisnotpresentthenthereisnouseforthemanyway.Athirdnaturalpestcontrolmethodinvolvesinstallingbatboxesintheexistingbarns.Batboxesmimicabat’snaturalhomeandlargeonescanhousesignificantcolonies.Despitethebat’sstigmas,thecreaturesareextremelyskilledatcatchinginsects;andwhilenotalloftheinsectpreywilllikelybepeststograpes,theaddedappealofhavingthebatsonsiteisworththeeffortnonetheless.

INVENTORY

TheplacementandarrangementoftheWineryfacilitieswasbasedoninventoryandanalysisworkdonepriortoanydesignwork.Theplacementofthebuildingswasbasedonoptimizingsurroundingviews,suitabilityforbuilding,integratingtheexistingrockwalls,andaccessfromexistingentrance.Thearrangementofthebuildingswasbasedprimarilyonslope(thebuildingsrunalongthecontourlines).Thearrangementalsoallowsforadramaticarrivalsequencewhilecreatinganinteresting

terracewithasecludedfeel.Thebuildingswereplacedadjacenttooneanotherforconvenientaccess.
