The Early Modern Period

The Early Modern Period is a term used by historians to refer to the transitional period in Western

Europe between the Middle Ages and modern society. The latter is assumed to be characterised by the

importance of science, technological progress, secular civic politics and capitalist economics, all

monitored by the nation state. The term 'Early Modern', then, applies to the period from the fifteenth to

the early eighteenth century when these developments were in the process of formation.

Pre Columbian civilizations

 GROUP TASK

9. Read the following text about pre-Columbian civilizations and fill the box below.

When Europeans reached America, they found a variety of cultures. Some of these people had created

important civilizations such as the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas, with a great socio-political and cultural

development. They did not know the wheel and the iron and they used simple weapons as maces, shields, bows and arrows.

Mayas The Maya civilization occupied the land of the Yucatan Peninsula. They had a very precise

calendar, a hieroglyphic writing and they had discovered the need for number zero, which

had failed Greeks or the Romans. They were farmers and merchants. The sovereign,

called Halac-Uimic, ruled a confederation of city-states. His power was supposedly by

divine origin and he was also the high priest.

Incas The Incas built their empire throughout the Andes. Its main food was potatoes and corn.

They also cultivated pumpkins, tomatoes, peanuts and cotton. It was ruled by the Inca, a

divinized head considered son of the sun, and the title was hereditary. The territory included

four provinces, each which was managed by a governor. They developed a system to

remember the dates and events called Quipu. They were very important for its suspension

bridges and their great road network.

Aztecs The Aztec civilization was in the territory of the current city of Mexico. The Aztecs developedirrigation techniques and floating cultivation fields. The cultivated corn, tomatoes, beans,

avocados, vanilla and cocoa, which made chocolate. They used a pictographic writing

system and they had a calendar. A confederation of cities, managed by a governor, formed

their empire where the emperor had the political, military and religious power.

Columbus reaches America

INDIVIDUAL TASK

12. Watch the video http://bit.ly/1VLUFrh and read the story about Christopher Columbus

I was born in Genoa, in Italy in 1451. My

parents gave me the name of Cristoforo

Colombo. I was the oldest of five children. Myfamily didn't have much money, so I worked

with my father, who was a weaver, As a young

man I went sailing but my ship was attacked

and it sank. I swam six kilometers and I arrived

to a Portuguese beach.

Then, I went to Lisbon and I became the

captain of a Portuguese ship. I wanted to find a

shorter route to the Indies to find gold and

spices. I believed I could find it sailing west.

Until now gold and spices came in caravans so

they were very expensive. King John II ofPortugal thought it was impossible and said no. I went to Ferdinand and Isabella, the King and Queen of

Spain and told them my plan. They offered to buy three ships- the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria-

and hired a crew of 90 men in 1492.

We set sail from Spain and two months later we reached land. It was an island and I called the people

living there 'Indians" because I thought I was near Africa. Then I returned to Spain and received an

award. Later I went back to the sea because the Spanish wanted to colonize the new islands. I made

four trips and it was only on the third that I realized that maybe I was wrong and this was not the Indies

but a new great continent, America.

13. Order these sentences about Christopher Columbus adventure.

⬜ They gave Colombus three ships: the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa Maria... and on the 3rd

 August 1492 he left Palos.

⬜  Colombus was a sailor, born in Genoa, Italy. He had always been fascinated by the sea!

⬜ Many people refused to help Colmbus to find this new rout to Asia, unitel Queen Isabella and

king Ferdinand of Spain agreed to help Columbus.

⬜ To go to India, China and Japan traders travelled east, bordering Africa, This took a long

time!

⬜ Columbus believed that the Earth was round so reaching India, China and Japan by sailing

west would be a lot faster.

⬜ On the 12th October 1492 Columbus arrived at the island of San Salvador, Bahamas. The

thought he had reached India, when in fact he had reached the "New Word", America.

⬜ In 1492, and before that day, people in Europe traded with India, China and Japan. spices

from Asia were highly appreciated!

Conquerors and/or explorers

 HOME TASK

The Age of Exploration,  also known as the Age of Discovery, was a period in history when European

nations explored the world, beginning in the 1400s and lasting through the 1600s. The most important

achievements from this time include the discovery of the Americas, finding a water route to Asia from

Europe, and making the first journey around the world.

Look at Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/) who were these conquerors and explorers and

match each one with its discovery.

1) Christopher ColumbusThe first explorer to sail around the Cape of Good Hope in

1488, located at the Southern tip of Africa.

2) Marco PoloSailed from Portugal down the east coast of South

 America from 1501-1502.

navigation, and organized over 50 voyages of exploration.

He searched for a water route to Asia by traveling around

 Africa.

Traveled from Spain to the New World, arriving in the

Bahamas in 1492. He led a total of 4 voyages to the New

Import  - To bring a product into a country.

With the recent discovered territory Europeans nations create anew desire for trade. Products from Europe were exported to

America and new discovered and valous products from America

were imported to Europe. New commercial routes were created

and the exchange of products increased starting a new global

economy.

20. Think about products that you use and they are imported to your country. Write them down.

Inventions and discoveries

PAIR TASK

During the Age of Exploration many tools were needed to help it flourish. These tools were helpful

mainly because they helped explorers travel across seas. The explorers were able to make their

discoveries mainly because of these innovations. Moreover this period is also known for important

inventions related to medicine and technology. Read more on bit.ly/1R9fE3k and en.wikipedia.org

Gall–Peters projection

It's impossible to portray the reality of the

spherical world on a flat map. The familiar

'Mercator' projection gives the right shapes of

land masses (up to a point), but at the cost of

distorting their sizes in favour of the wealthy

lands to the north.

The German Arno Peters tried to correct this.

His projection gets the proportions (roughly)

right, and has the effect of emphasising the

Third World. Maps based on the projection are

promoted by UNESCO, and they are also

widely used by British schools The Peters projection world map got the proportions (roughly) right in 1974

PAIR TASK

You lived during the period of the Age of Exploration in Europe. You have the task by the King of

attracting explorers to sail for your chosen country and must create a poster explaining why a person

should sign up to explore the "new world."

● Include information that you have learned during this unit.● Use information for an explorer to help you with your poster.

● Create a poster that uses pictures and words to communicate your message.

26. In pairs create the poster using the APP Moldiv (Collage folder). You will present it to the

class. Before starting create an evaluation rubric containing the words in the Word Bank.
