Knightwasbludgeonedtodeathwithaham- mer last October. Shaun Biggs, son of the robbery victims Cheryl (58) and Dave Biggs (65), of Sutherland farm, said yesterday the family feels lucky the couple survived the attack without sustaining worse injuries. Three intruders bashed down a door and took his parents by surprise, while they were watching a movie at about 8pm on Friday. The ringleader had a firearm and the trio were armed with a Taser, which they used to shock his parents. His mother was the most severely injured, suffering extensive bruising and swelling of her face, a blue eye and a cracked rib. His father was Tasered at least 10 times, knocked to the ground and punched by the as- sailants Shaun said. “One of them had a gun, a 9mm pistol, and held it to their heads during the robbery. They mostly interrogated my mother, so she was punched quite a bit in the face, and they also used the Taser on her. They were looking for money and guns, and it seems as if they were convinced there was another safe in the house because they took pictures off the walls and pulled up the carpets looking for it,” he said. Shaun said that according to his parents the attackers spoke good English and “were very aggressive and seemed professional”. While demanding money and pin numbers for the couple’s bank cards, they made refer- ences to the murder of Underberg timber farm- er Knight, who was beaten to death with ham- mers while his partner Beth Bucher was forced to watch. “They were using that to threaten my folks,” said Biggs. The robbers eventually fled with a large quantity of goods and firearms, which they loaded into the couple’s Isuzu double-cab. A pearl necklace and a Kruger rand were among the items stolen. The assailants tied the couple up before flee- ing. They managed to free themselves and called Shaun, whose home is about 800metres from his parent’s home, for help shortly after 9pm. The stolen bakkie was later found aban- doned on the Underberg road, near Bulwer by police and members of Magma Security compa- ny, who are assisting with the investigation. The Fever was told that the police are follow- ing up a number of leads. The Biggs family has lived in Ixopo for about 70 years. Dave and his sons farm timber, beef and sugar cane. They also own Sutherland Seedlings nursery, and Cheryl runs an upmar- ket guest house, Kings Grant Country Retreat, on the farm. Shaun said they have never been attacked or even had a burglary before. “We don’t know why this happened now. We don’t have any dis- gruntled staff to speak of.” See page 2. >> ‘I urge all people of KwaZuluNatal, particularly the farming community, to work closely with the police’

THE KwaZulu-NatalMEC for Transport,Community Safety andLiaison, Willies Mc-hunu has expresseddeep concern at thecontinuing attacks onfarm owners sayingthat these will have aneffect of destabilisingfood security, and willput the province in abad light.

Mchunu was com-menting in the wake ofan attack by armedrobbers at the home ofIxopo farm owners.

Reports received byMchunu indicate thatCheryl (58) and DaveBiggs (68)were accost-ed by armed robberswho taunted themovera long period of time.

The couple, howev-er, survived the attack.

Last year farmown-er Dan Knight was at-tackedandkilledinUn-derberg and early thismonth three familymembers of a farmowner were killed inRichmond.

“I am disturbed atthis trend of attacks onmostly senior farm

owners. These have aneffect of paintinganeg-ative picture of theprovince as an invest-ment destination. Itcould also threaten thefood security as farm-ers are responsible forproviding food.

“I urge all people ofKwaZulu-Natal, par-ticularly the farmingcommunity, to workclosely with the policetoensure that these [at-tacks, murders] cometo an end,” saidMchunu.

Mchunu applaudedthe recent life sentenceimposed by the Pieter-maritzburg High Courton thekillerof anEstonfarmer, 60-year-oldMick Hampson, sayingthis would send astrong message tocriminals that the longarm of law would al-ways catch up withthem.

Siboniso Mtolo wassentenced to life im-prisonment for themurder of Hampsonwho was killed on hisfarm in September.

THEGreaterKokstadMunicipalityMayorNosisa Jojozi lambasted LandlessPeople’sMovement(LPM)memberswho

“There are laws in this country and theyneed to be followed,” Jojozi said at a mediabriefing in the municipality boardroom onMonday.

The briefing was held following a legalbattlebetweenthetheGreaterKokstadMunici-pality and the Landless People’s Movementover what themunicipality considers to be theillegal occupation of municipal land by theLandless People’s Movement.

The landlesspeople filedanurgent interdictin thePietermaritzburgHighCourtagainstanyfurther demolishing of shacks built in theTafeni area by the municipality.

TheLandless People’sMovement claimed itwas illegal for themunicipality to demolish theshacks as they have a right to housing.

“The judge found that the case of these so-calledlandlesspeoplehadnosubstance,whichtells you that these so-called landless peoplecited incorrect things in their court bid.”

The Landless People’s Movement bid wasdismissed by the High Court with costs.

Jojozi said the municipality acknowledgesthat thereare somechallenges in theprovisionof houses, but said there are proper channelsthat need to be followed.

“We say to residents of Kokstad that whatthose people did was wrong and must not becopied.”

GKMMunicipalManagerZamoMkhizesaidthe court had outlined that when the matterwent to court there were no houses there —therewerejust“half-builtstructureswithpolesand corrugated iron”.

“The reason why the court dismissed theclaim by the so-called landless people was thefact that the structures they were calling theirhomeswerenothabitable—theyhadnot evenbeen finished, so they were not sincere,” saidMkhize.

Jojozi said the land in the Tafeni area wasreserved for a police station.

WARM greetings to Kwa Sani citizens. It iswith great pleasure that we meet onceagain this week. The days are drawing closer to 27 April when South Africa will celebrate the looming 20th anniversary of demoncracy, and at the same time reflect onthe country’s development and achievements over the past 20 years.

We all deserve to revel in this importantcelebration of 20 years of democracy andembrace the positive things the government has done to improve the lives of the

South Africans. The Kwa Sani Municipality, as one of

the tourism destinations in the world, hasgained recognition and acceptance as afriendly and welcoming, capable of hosting international events such as theSplashy Fen festival and other nationalevents.

On 27 March the Kwa Sani Municipalitywill be hosting the Tourism EnterpriseStartup Awareness programme at Jabulani hall in Himeville. The purpose of this

programme is to encourage people, especially the previously disadvantaged community, totapintotourismbusinessopportunities. This programme will provide aplatform to engage with different tourismbodies that will provide them with insight, skills and requirements necessary for thetourism environment and practices, henceinculcating tourism transformation.

As part of the 20 years’ of freedom celebrations, this is one of many ways that reflect the country’s achievements as well

as milestones the Kwa Sani Municipalityand South Africa have achieved.

The Mayoral Cup finals will be playedon 30 March at the Enhlanhleni sportsground in Ward 2. The winners from thegames played during the past two weekends will battle each other in order to become the overall winner for Kwa Sani in allsporting codes.

The Kwa Sani community and stakeholders are encouraged to grace the eventwith their presence and give moral sup

port, hence the saying “a playing mind isa healthy mind”. This is one of the initiatives by the government to encourage theyouth to stay away from drugs.

The Kwa Sani Municipality promotessport and education as a tool that can bea catalyst in changing the future of thiscountry and it will not halt in its efforts tobring change to the Kwa Sani comunity.

Let us embrace the honour of beingSouth Africans and be patriotic as KwaSani citizens.

Kwa Sani Municipality news

THE continued killing of farmers is a grave concern in the Sisonke region.

Last year the murder of another farmer inUnderberg sent shock waves through the community and country with many people and thegovernment condemning the incidents.

However, condemnation does not deter the

people who carry out these inhumane acts.Needless to say, this country has a long historyof violence especially racerelated violence.

These murders don’t do the country anygood as these killings and attacks are committed by black people and their victims are whitefarmers. Even though we cannot confirm this

notion, this issue remains dangerous for ouryoung democracy. Police and the governmentmust do a lot more to root out communitycrime.

We have had enough violence to last a lifetime. This trend must continue to be condemned by everyone.

EDITORIAL COMMENTFarm murders, moremust be done tostop them

Dear Fever,THE African Independent

Congress (AIC) is not surprisedby the ANC’s intentions to ridi-cule the Public Protector onNkandla gate. The ANC hasbeen hijacked by lumpen politi-cians who are corrupt and arro-gant.

If the ANC is serious aboutfighting corruption in this coun-try, they [ANC] shouldn’t haveelected Jacob Zuma as the presi-dent of the party at Mangaung in2007 and the president of thecountry in 2009, because thenthe dark cloud of corruption andmoney laundering charges washanging over his head.

For the constitutional democ-racy to work better, the AIC be-lieves that the electoral systemin this country should bechanged and the AIC proposesthat there should be two roundsof elections within 21 days. Inthe first round of election, thepresident, who must be aboveparty politics, shall be elected, all highly qualified persons whoare eligible to stand for the office

shall be allowed to stand. If thecandidate who has won the raceis from a political party, he orshe must resign from his or herpolitical party before he or she issworn in the highest office in theland.

The second round of electionshall elect public representativesfrom across political spectrum inthe country.

Once public representativesare sworn in, the president willform his or her cabinet by ap-pointing members from allpolitical parties represented inparliament and this will bedone on proportionalbasis.

The AIC believes that this ap-proach shall legitimise the multi-party system in our country, andfurther avoid the repeat of theeight days in September 2008the removal of ThaboMbeki.

The AIC calls upon the ANCto keep hands off the Public Pro-tector.

WARM greetings to Umzimkhulupeople

Malenge, Matshitshi and Deda electrification project

The Umzimkhulu Municipality MayorCllr MB Mpabanga, council speaker Cllr KEThobela and the portfolio head of infrastructure and engineering, Cllr S. Ngcongovisited Ward 3 about service delivery is

sues. In spite of the jubilation by community members, electrification is a core concern for service delivery and is multifaceted. The project, regarded as Phase 1,illustrates that the impasse which has emanated from inadequate infrastructure isgradually dissipating, and the duration ofthe project is estimated to be around sevento eight months. We wish to express our

delight that the project will be finally introduced. The entire ward is without electricity, butthismeansthathopewillfinallyprevail after the introduction of the project.

Indeed, the team also went to Ebomvini Village to clarify some issues of servicedelivery. The attendance was awesome. The community focused on electrificationchallenges. There was an explanation

about inadequate energy capacity fromCorinth substation. The back boneHarewhich needs to be erected at Nsikeni, is ahindrance to household connections.Hence Eskom has committed itself to secure funding for infrastructure. Thereforephase 2 is anticipated to begin before thecompletion of phase 1.

Water challenges were adequately ad

dressed because vandalism was takingplace at the reservoir. Criminals cut thepipes and threw stones into the reservoir.

The contractor could not revive theproject until such issues are addressed.

Mr A. Ngqoyiya promised to immediately bring back the contractor so that hecould continue where he left off.

I thank you.
