East High Multipurpose Facilityand a series of moves to provide additional
opportunities for our students
Board Meeting
February 16, 2016
16-034
Starting Point – Student needs
• Current conditions for East High wrestling is not representative of what our students deserve.
• Other student focused needs that need attention: Baseball, Softball, Golf, Soccer
• A series of one change/need leading to another.
• All for less dollars.
Old wrestling mats needed to be cut up and pieced together to fit small spaces
Building columns pose a safety hazard and restricts student activities
Limited space does not provide program storage needs.
How would existing wrestling room be used in the future?
• Flex and Fitness room• Additional PE space (from 4 to 5) during any
given block
• Additional 320 students served PE• Decrease the size of other PE classes
Why Walker Street building
• Existing relationship to current building. (couldn’t be any closer)
• East High needs can be accommodated in this facility
• Existing districtwide programming (SPED) can be relocated to another facility
• Great connection to Boys and Girls Club/community
Boys & Girls Club
Benefits of Boys & Girls Club / DMPS Partnership
• Continuing students education beyond the school day• Making efficient and effective use of school facilities during
out-of-school time• Staff work hand-in-hand with school administration to provide
comprehensive support for our students• Provides social and emotional learning opportunities which
leave students better prepared to handle the challenges of the school day
• Preventing summer learning loss so that students are better prepared for the next academic year
Benefits to our Students
• Safe, supportive environment for our students during out-of-school time
• Caring, highly educated, adult role models who help students grow and develop
• Seamless transition for school to Club, which helps to ensure academic success and on-time graduation
• Bridge the achievement gap for students of color and English language learners
• Provide a laser focus on good citizenship principles to help our students become the future leaders of our community
