Georgia Lighthouse Schools to Watch Program®in collaboration with

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform

In December 2011 EJMS was named a Georgia Lighthouse Schools to Watch--  

Georgia Lighthouse Schools to Watch is a state-level partnership that seeks to identify high-performing middle grades schools in our state.

Georgia is one of 18 states that have qualified to be part of the National Forum Schools to Watch® program. The National Forum is an alliance of

more than 60 educators, researchers, and officers of national associations and foundations dedicated to improving schools for young adolescents

across the country. This program annually seeks to identify schools throughout the nation that are committed to a journey of excellence

centered around the program areas of Academic Excellence, Developmental Responsiveness, Social Equity, and Organizational

Structures and Processes.

East Jackson Middle School 2010-2011 Goals

By Spring 2011, 20% of students at Level 1 or 2 will increase a performance level in reading, language arts, and math.

By Spring 2011, 15% of students at Level 1 or 2 will increase a performance level in science.

By Spring 2011, 90% of 8th grade students will meet or exceed standards as measured by the state writing rubric.

By Spring 2011, parent involvement will increase from 22% to 50% as measured by an average of all activities encouraging parent involvement (non-athletic).

Summary of Meeting Goals 20% of students at Level 1 or 2 will increase

a performance level in reading, ELA, social studies, and math. Reading--66 student moved up at least one level

which is 15% ELA--80 students moved up at least one level

which is 18% Math--56 students moved up at least one level

which is 13%

Summary of Meeting Goals 15% of students at Level 1 or 2 will

increase a performance level in science Science--50 students moved up at least

one level which is 11% Parent involvement will increase from

What are we doing? All students at grades 6-8 will participate in the science fair Instructional coach and administration meet with all

content areas during common planning Weekly kid-talks to discuss at-risk students. Data analysis

of common assessments and performance series. Title I and ESOL push-in models utilized Co-teaching in areas identified ELT weekly by subject area READ180 Gifted services provided within each team

What are we doing? Professional learning communities meet daily

each week based on the following schedule: Monday--Kid-talks Tuesday--Data discussion Wednesday--Walk-throughs (peer observations) Thursday--Technology Friday--Grade level/Professional learning

Teachers surveyed to identify needs Lighthouse PLC’s are held monthly based on teacher

area of interest. These committees are working to implement growth areas as indicated by the lighthouse report.
