Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 12, 2020
This is Easter Sunday! Perhaps the most unusual Easter that we have ever experienced, but Easter none the less. Alleluia! Our Gospel reading has Peter and the beloved disciple racing to the tomb when Mary Magdalen brought them the news that Jesus’ tomb was empty. Can you try to imagine what must have been going through their minds as they ran to see what had happened?
We know what happened through our faith handed down across the long centuries by the church. For them, that first Easter morning, it
was something quite different. Shock, amazement and wonderment at what had happened, for they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. That same faith of ours will provide meaning for us while watching televised Easter masses at home rather than gathering in church as we have always done before. We will be able to live stream Easter Sunday Mass from both of our parishes this Easter morning!
The sense of loss the apostles felt on Good Friday is something that we now understand much better as we are cut off from public worship and reception of Holy Communion. When we can finally return to public mass in church, I suspect that we will understand much better the profound joy of the Apostles when Jesus came through the locked door into the upper room and greeted his apostles that first Easter night.
Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Jesus is the Lord of life. He truly rose from the dead. That is why we have always worshipped him. He did that out of love for us. In the midst of this virus pandemic we hold fast to our Lord Jesus. Times such as these, test our faith. Through this testing, our faith can grow as it might never have done otherwise. As we adapt to life during a pandemic and all the changes it has brought, let us be on the lookout for new ways to deepen our encounter with our risen Lord, Jesus Christ. They will be there, for our God is good! Ask our Blessed Mother to help each day in this adventure of discovering new depth in our prayer and our actions. When something is tested, we learn how strong it is. May our faith rise up and grow ever stronger through these challenging days. God bless you all this Easter Sunday and all the days ahead.
The Lord is risen! Truly, He is risen! Amen and Alleluia!
