    EIGHTEEN QUESTIONS ON THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM The following eighteen questions address the most commonly receivedquestions concerning the Sacred Paschal Triduum, and may be freely

    reproduced by diocesan Offices for Worship, parish Liturgy Committees, andothers seeing to promote the effective celebration of these most sacred days!

    1. When does the Triduum bein !nd end"The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper onHoly Thursday, reahes its high point in the Easter !igil, and loses withEvening "rayer on Easter Sunday.

    $rdinarily, no other Mass may be elebrated on Holy Thursday. However,by way of e%eption, the loal $rdinary may permit another Mass inhurhes and oratories to be elebrated in the evening, and, in the ase ofgenuine neessity, even in the morning. Suh Masses are provided forthose who in no way are able to partiipate in the evening Mass.

    1B. Where is the &!s'h!( '!nd(e &(!'ed durin E!ster Time"The pashal andle has its proper plae either by the ambo or by the altarand should be lit at least in all the more solemn liturgial elebrations of theseason until "enteost Sunday, whether at Mass, or at Morning andEvening "rayer. 'fter Easter Time the andle should be (ept with honor inthe baptistery, so that in the elebration of Daptism the andles of the

    bapti6ed may be lit from it. ?n the elebration of funerals the pashal andleshould be plaed near the offin to indiate 8hrist’s undying presene, hisvitory over sin and death, and the promise of sharing in 8hrist’s vitory byvirtue of being part of the Dody of 8hrist ;see Order of Christian *unerals,no. &=. The pashal andle should not otherwise be lit nor plaed in thesantuary outside Easter Time.

    EASTER VIGIL

    The Easter !igil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Coman 8atholi

    8hurh. This wal(s through the Easter !igil, and inludes the words to the

    &'sultet .

    DIRECTIONS

     'lthough elebrated Holy Saturday evening, it is the dramati Easter vigil liturgy

    that mar(s the beginning of Easter. e are awaiting our master9s return with our 

    lamps full and burning, so that he will find us awa(e and seat us at his table ;f.

    Lu(e 1#2&ff=. 'll 8atholis should try to attend this beautiful servie. The vigil is

    divided into four parts2

    1. Servie of Light,

    #. Liturgy of the ord,&. Liturgy of Daptism, and

    ). Liturgy of the Euharist.

    water fonts are drained, all the lights are out, the tabernale is empty. The

    The priest lights the andle from the new fire, saying2

    The andle is then proessed through the hurh, with the deaon lifting the

    and the ongregation sings in reply2 Than(s be to :od ;or $eo gratias=.

    Everyone lights their andle from the Easter andle and ontinue in proession

    until the whole hurh is alight. The "ashal andle symboli6es 8hrist, the Light

The followers of @esuswanted to relive those important moments. They believed that @esus would bewith them as they did so. Through ritual and story they retold and e%perienedanew the story of salvation.

    Every year the hurh retells this holy story through ritual and the word of sripture. hat happened two thousand years ago is present again eah timethese great mysteries are ommemorated.

    Fnfortunately, not that many teenagers e%periene the great mysterieselebrated during the Triduum ;the Gthree daysG of Holy Thursday, :ood /riday,and Holy SaturdayEaster !igil=. 8onseAuently, they never learn about some of the fundamental symbols of 8hristianity. The purpose of this assembly then is toe%plain and elebrate these mysteries by direting attention to the rih andsensual symbolism of the Sared Triduum.
