She received a prize of £5,000, with an additional prize of £5,000 going to the charity of her choice. The two runners-up won £2,000 each with the same amount going to their charity of choice.

The Awards ceremony took place at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge in front of a specially-invited audience from across the racing industry to celebrate the vital role of stud and stable staff in the racing industry and the care which they provide to the horses they look after. The winners of the Awards were decided at a formal judging day at the BHA’s London office in the morning before the ceremony, where the finalists were interviewed by members of the judging panel.

“He’s beautifully balanced and a great walker. He’s a strong horse and we’re delighted to have acquired him and, hopefully, we can get him up and going for the early two-year-old races. His attitude is amazing as well. I’m sure he got pulled out a lot of times and there were a lot of good judges on him.”

The second top seller was the Star Witness colt from Gervase Park Stud, who was bought by Ric Wylie Bloodstock for A$160,000. Catalogued as Lot 109, the colt is the second foal of the winning Econsul mare Trading Halt, a half-sister to Gr.3 winner Bank Robber (Dash For Cash) and the Listed-placed Kwassa Kwassa (Distant Music). This is also the family of the Gr.2 winner Ponton Flyer (Flying Spur).

The third highest price, A$145,000, was paid by John Chalmers Bloodstock for a Demerit colt. Consigned as Lot 82 by Taunton Vale, he is a half-brother to the Gr.3 Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Showy Chloe (Alfred Nobel) and Listed winner El Rijes (Eternity Range). They come from the family of the Listed winners Dancing Pago (Thunder Gulch), Pago Rock and Rock My Pago (both by Rock Of Gibraltar).

Lot 39, a filly by Written Tycoon, was knocked down to Ben Pearce Racing for A$130,000. Consigned by Gervase Park Stud, she is the second foal out of the winning Orientate mare Risktaker, who is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Kingston Town Classic winner Perfect Reflection, the Gr.3 La Trice Classic winner Ideal Image, the dual Listed winner New Image (all by More Than Ready) and the Listed winner Elusive Image (Elusive Quality).

Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox summed up the day when saying, “There have been some very good sales, obviously, with the top price of $325,000. We are disappointed with the clearance rate, sitting at around 72%. By our standards we would like to be at 75%, or even into the 80s.

“The numbers are very much in line with day one last year and there are some very nice horses tomorrow, so I’m hoping for a good finish to the sale. When the good horses come into the ring the competition is fierce.”

RACING ROUND-UP

JapaneseJapanese RACING REVIEW

Gold Allure (Sunday Silence) sadly died on Saturday just before the start of his 14th season at stud. The chesnut was a classy performer, good enough to finish fifth in the 2002 Japanese Derby, and collected seven of his eight wins on dirt. He dominated the dirt league in winning the Japan Dirt Derby, Derby Grand Prix, Tokyo Daishoten, February Stakes and the Antares Stakes. He was retired after an unsuccessful start in the Gr.1 Teio Sho with a record of eight wins from 16 starts and earnings in excess of ¥410m.

He had been popular since joining the stallion ranks and in his first season (2004) covered a book of 147 mares and subsequently had books of more than 200 twice. He has sired 1,342 foals, 1,092

NationalAccounts

With the fifth week under way and all inductions and field trips finished, the more routine and utilitarian stud work now begins. Groups of three or more of us are allocated a certain yard for the following two weeks on a rotational basis. Daily duties include the obvious jobs, such as turning out, mucking out and feeding, and, depending on which set of mares we have (maidens, barrens, mares in foal or mares with foals), routine checks and procedures can vary hugely.

Teasing and keeping a record of each mare’s oestrous cycle is a daily procedure for maidens and barrens; foals’ temperatures are taken daily and checking on pregnant mares is done rigorously. I find this rota seems to work very well, as it makes us incredibly yard-proud for the 14 days. Believing you are on the “best” yard instills the incentive to work harder in maintaining order and gives one pride in caring for that yard’s mares as if they were one’s own, until, of course, the time is up and we move on to the next “best” yard.

My name is Madeleine, I’m 21 and I live and grew up on a tiny island in the Caribbean called Mustique. Neither I, nor my parents, know where my fascination with thoroughbreds originated, but all the same, it is there. The National Stud Diploma Course has already exceeded my expectations of taking on a world full of knowledge. Only now have I realised there is so much to learn about breeding and the entire thoroughbred industry, from conception to the race track and back to conception of the next generation.

What is wonderful about this course is knowing that the other 23 students will be our contemporaries in the industry. We are, in some respects, the future leading stud managers, blood stock agents or trainers. These intensive six months are not only beneficial for making contacts in the current thoroughbred world and meeting potential employers, but also building a good relationship with our fellow students who may some day be dominating the industry.

With high hopes for the prospective years, we now return to our humble position in the deep straw with pitchfork in hand.

Porter ACROSS THE POND

PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

MISS GOSSIP (Ire), 4f, Big Bad Bob – Cabin Point (Desert Story) O: Winchester Racing, B: Mrs J Harrington, T: Andrew McKeever

Miss Gossip made her debut in the US last July, finishing second in an Arlington Park allowance contest. She rounded out the year with a fifth in the Gr.3 Pucker Up Stakes, a third in an allowance at Presque Isle Downs and an unplaced finish in an allowance at Keeneland in October. Running last Friday for the first time since, she powered up from the rear to take a Fair Grounds allowance by half a length. She had raced four times in Ireland at two, winning a maiden at Leopardstown on her third start.

She is the first foal of her dam, the four-time winner Cabin Point (Desert Story). The second dam, Have Merci (High Estate), also won four times and is a half-sister to the Group-placed Goodwood Blizzard (Inchinor). The third dam, Icecapped (Caerleon), is a Listed-placed half-sister to the dam of Nitrous (Major Impact), a Stakes winner in Italy.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH (GB), 3f, Bated Breath – Fatal Attraction (Oasis Dream) O: Glen Hill Farm and Heider Family Stables, B: C J Mills, T: Thomas F Proctor

Running for the first time in the US, Take A Deep Breath closed well, but failed failed by a neck in a one-mile turf allowance race at Tampa Bay Downs last Thursday. In Ireland, she ran three times, winning a maiden at Naas on her second appeareance and then running a good second to the well-regarded Promise To Be True (Galileo) in the Gr.3 Silver Flash Stakes.

She is one of three winners out of her dam, Fatal Attraction, a full-sister to the smart sprinter Mirza, whose successes include a pair of victories in the Gr.3 Prix du Petit Couvert. The second dam, Millyant (Primo Dominie), also landed the same race on two occasions, as well as winning the Gr.2 Prix du Gros-Chene and Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes. She is a half-sister to to the multiple Group winner and sire Prince Sabo (Young Generation), Listed scorer Bold Jessie (Never So Bold; dam of the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes winner and sire Abou Zouz and Listed winner Jentzen), and to the grandam of Birchwood, successful in the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes and third in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and Gr.1 National Stakes, and Luck San/Happy Patrick, a Stakes winner in Macau.

TOMBELAINE (USA), 5h, First Defence – Kithira (Danehill) O: Head of Plains Partners and Michael Dubb, B: Juddmonte Farms, T: Chad C Brown $55,000 2016 Keeneland November Sale by Ingordo Bloodstock, consigned by Mill Ridge Sales

A Stakes winner and Classic contender in Ireland, Tombelaine has found the going tougher in the US. He started twice last year, finishing unplaced in allowance company at Gulfstream Park in March on his Stateside debut, then reappeared in October for a third at the same level at Belmont Park. Running for the first time since, he was beaten a head in an allowance/optional claimer at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. He had raced six times in Ireland, winning a maiden at two (with Highland Reel in second) and the Listed Tetrarch Stakes at three. He was second in the Gr.3 Tyros Stakes, beaten three-quarters of a length by the multiple Gr.1 winner Gleneagles, and the Gr.3 Juvenile Turf Stakes at two. His final outing saw him finish a respectable fifth behind Gleneagles, Endless Drama (whom he had beaten in the Tetrarch Stakes), Ivawood and Belardo in the Gr. 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas.

He is a half-brother to Kalamos (Empire Maker), who was LIsted-placed in France and a Stakes winner in the US. Their dam, Kithera, also won black-type events in both countries, as well as finishing third in the Gr.3 Prix d’Aumale and Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg. She is a half-sister to the Gr.3 Prix de Psyche winner Tenuous (Generous) and to the dam of Attima (Zafonic), who was successful in the Gr.2 San Clemente Handicap and Gr.2 Honeymoon Handicap. The grandam, Atropa (Vaguely Noble), is a full-sister to French Listed winner Kajall.

BROOKLYN BOBBY (USA), 3c, Frankel – Balance (Thunder Gulch) O: Amerman Racing, B: Mrs Jerry Amerman, T: Brian A Lynch

One who looks like he is sitting on a win is Brooklyn Bobby, the only runner in the US to date for Frankel. He was very green when making his debut in a Saratoga maiden last August. He appeared for the first time since in a maiden at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, and delivered a three-wide bid to finish second.

He is out of Balance, who is not only a half-sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta (Street Cry), but who also captured four Graded Stakes in her own right, including the Gr.1 Santa Anita Oaks, Gr.1 Santa Margarita Invitational Stakes and Gr.1 Las Virgenes Stakes. Balance is also a half-sister to Stakes winner Where’s Bailey (Aljabr), herself dam of She’s Not Here (Street Cry), twice successful in the Gr.2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap, and to the dam of Long Island Sound (War Front), successful in last September’s Gr.3 Diamond Stakes in Ireland and a head second in the Gr.1 Secretariat Stakes in the US.

,

1What is your role and how long have you worked at the IRB?

I have been at the IRB for nearly three years and work in the Trainers Services Department.

2How did you get involved in the industry?

My father was Champion Conditional Jockey and was mostly associated with the Dickinson yard, and my mother did a lot of eventing. They have owned a riding school near Malton for as long as I can remember, so I have always been surrounded by horses. I did a lot of showing when I was younger, but had no real interest in riding, as my bottle wasn’t great after I got ran away with for a full day out hunting and then ended up getting buried!

3How did you progress into your current position?

I went to school at Sedbergh in Cumbria, where I was lucky enough to be appointed as Head of School in my final year. From then onwards I occasionally went to university and got a degree before getting a place on the BHA Graduate Programme. My placement was at Huntingdon Racecourse before getting a job at the British Racing School. I was there for six months, then worked for the BHA as a Trainee Stipendiary Steward. I spent a year with them, which was a great experience, and since 2014 I have been at the IRB.

4 What does your role involve? On a daily basis I would be doing entries,

mainly for English and Irish trainers for their horses running abroad, predominantly in Europe. We have lots of runners in France, Germany and Italy throughout the year, so we are always kept busy. I do a lot of race planning for trainers wishing to run abroad, whether to

gain black type, win a claimer or for horses who are eligible for French Premiums. I do a lot of work for the Jockey Clubs in Scandinavia, Switzerland and Turkey, trying to recruit horses to go and race in their big races.

5When did you arrive in Qatar for the Emir’s Sword Festival?

I came over on 15th February, so that I got here before the International horses arrived in quarantine.

6Which countries does the IRB represent?

We are involved with more or less every country in the world which has a racecourse.

7What international runners are you looking after at the Festival

and where have they come from? I am the quarantine barn supervisor, so I oversee every horse which is in quarantine whilst here for the Emir’s Sword Festival. This year we have horses from America, Bahrain England, Ireland, France, Germany, Oman and four English horses flying in from Dubai, who have been running at the Carnival.

8How far in advance do the horses need to arrive?

It varies, Thomas Fourcy has had his four horses here from France since the middle of last week, whereas Aidan O’Brien will fly Cougar Mountain in on Thursday, race Friday and go home on Saturday.

9Do you look after connections as well or just the horses?

I am basically the middle man between the grooms and QREC [Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club] leading up to the racedays, so if the grooms need anything, whether it be veterinary related,

farrier, specialised feed or organising track work, they will come to me and I will sort it out for them. If QREC need anything from the grooms, trainers or owners, they will come to me and I’ll sort whatever issue there is, so it works both ways. On race days again, if owners, trainers, grooms need anything I might not know the answer, but I’ll know someone who does.

10What shipping company transports the horses?

LG [Luck Greayer Bloodstock Shipping] does all the shipping to Qatar for the European horses.

11Do horses adapt and acclimatise well or have you

encountered any issues? This year the weather has been similar to England, cold and wet, so horses have had no problem acclimatising. Last year it was much warmer, so it can take a couple of days for the horses to get rehydrated and eating up, but, touch wood, there are usually very few issues in this sense.

12What type of horses suit racing there?

The races can be quite rough, as the course is tight, so you need a tough horse which goes

on quick ground and travels in its races.

The three-day Emir’s Sword Festival gets underway this Thursday at Al Rayyan Racecouse in Doha, Qatar, and, with so many international runners, EBN talks to MAX PIMLOTT of the International Racing Bureau [IRB] about his background and his role in the process.

TRICOLORE BLEU (Jpn), 3c, Stay Gold – Penkenna Princess (Pivotal) O: Silk Racing, B: Northern Farm, T: Yasuo Tomomichi

Tricolore Bleu (Stay Gold) moved between rivals inside the last two furlongs and ran on well to land his first win against winners in the conditions race over 2000m on Saturday at Tokyo. The colt, who won over 2000m last July, had a better trip than his runner-up Burringurrah (Fastnet Rock) and is expected to develop into a Stakes performer. His dam, Penkenna Princess (Pivotal), was just a short-head away from a Classic win when beaten by Saoire (Pivotal) in the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas after she won the Gr.3 Fred Darling Stakes. She has already produced the Gr.2-placed World Impact and Danon Gelato, both by Deep Impact.

The 15-year-old mare has a two-year-old colt by Deep Impact and visited Heart’s Cry in 2016.

of them now aged three or older. According to the JBIS database, he has had 721 winners for a fine ratio of 66% winners to foals. On Sunday, his son Gold Dream provided him with a fourth win in the Gr.1 February Stakes.

Gold Allure also has 124 registered two-year-olds, 123 yearlings and covered 141 mares in 2016. His contribution to Japanese breeding could go higher if his unbeaten three-year-old Epicharis, who won the Listed Hyacinth Stakes on Sunday, takes his place in the Kentucky Derby:

EPICHARIS (Jpn), 3c, Gold Allure – Stapes Mitsuko (Carnegie) O: U Carrot Farm, B: Masatsugu Kamada, T: Kiyoshi Hagiwara ¥26,000,000 JRHA Select Foal Sale by Northern Farm

Epicharis (Gold Allure) collected his fourth win in the Listed Hyacinth Stakes and will have a guaranteed berth in the Kentucky Derby, thanks to the 50 points gained in the “Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby” programme. His trainer Masatsugu Kamada said that Epicharis has also gained an invitation to the Gr.2 UAE Derby.

The colt, who won the Gr.3 Hokkaido Nisai Yushun on his final juvenile start, is a reliable and consistent performer. French jockey Christophe Lemaire gave him a perfect waiting ride from gate two and he did his job well, defeating the frontrunner Adirato (Rulership) by three-quarters of a length. Foggy Night (Tapit) was the only hard luck story of the race. The grey, out of Gr.1 winner Champagne D’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro), missed the break from gate one, but made up a lot of ground in the straight, finishing fourth, three lengths behind the winner. Last year another grey colt by Tapit, the talented Lani, ran similarly in finishing fifth, and subsequently landed the Gr.2 UAE Derby and ran third in the Belmont Stakes:

Epicharis, a ¥26m purchase by Northern Farm at the JRHA Select Foal Sale, was syndicated by U Carrot Farm for 400 shares for a total value of ¥36m. The shareholders made a pretty good investment, as the colt has already earned ¥55m. He is a half-brother to Meisho Naruto (Heart’s Cry), winner of the Gr.3 Tanabata Sho and Kokura Kinen, who is still registered as an active racehorse at nine and is close to ¥200m in earnings. Their dam Stapes Mitsuko (Carnegie) landed a sprint on turf and has delivered four other winners.

Stapes Mitsuko has a two-year-old colt by Empire Maker (sold for ¥18m at the Hokkaido Selection Sale by Isao Yamazumi). She has visited Orfevre twice, but failed to return a foal in 2016.

LANGADHIA (Jpn), 3c,

King Kamehameha – Marie Chantal (Sunday Silence) O: Katsumi Yoshida, B: Northern Farm, T: Tetsuya Kimura

Langadhia (King Kamehameha), back from a six-month layoff following a promising win on his debut at Niigata, posted a solid performance when landing the conditions race over 1600m on Sunday at Tokyo. The colt is from one of the most successful families in the Japanese Studbook. His dam, Marie Chantal (Sunday Silence), a four-time winner, has produced seven winners, topped by the multiple Group-placed Phantom Light (Opera House), and is herself a half-sister to the Japanese Oaks heroine Air Groove (Tony Bin), dam of the dual Gr.1 winner

FAN DII NAN (Jpn), 3f, Deep Impact – Dream Of Genie (Pivotal) O: Turf Sport, B: Tanikawa Stud, Tomokazu Takano

Fan Dii Nan (Deep Impact) has earned our Star Performer spot for the second time in four weeks, but she is not in this position because of a lack of imagination. The big filly couldn’t have been more impressive on her second start and cleaned up the Tsubaki Sho, a fillies’ event over 1800m on Sunday at Kyoto, in a matter of strides. Yuga Kawada allowed her to settle in third, despite a very slow pace set by Tagano Aswad (Neo Universe). She had some five lengths to make up entering the last 300m, but really flew home to score effortlessly by a length and three quarters. She clocked the last 600m in 33s flat.

The filly, who scored a pillar-to-post win on her debut over the same course and distance, looks a bright Classic candidate, even if she is yet to be tested in a race run at a genuine pace. She has plenty of speed and the 1600m trip of the Oka Sho will not bother her.

Her half-brother, four-year-old Namura Shingun (Victoire Pisa), a minor Stakes winner, was second in the Listed Wakaba Stakes and contested the Gr.1 Satsuki Sho last season. Their dam Dream Of Genie (Pivotal) is out of one of the most celebrated families developed by the Niarchos Family. The second dam, Glia (A P Indy), won the Listed (then) Prix Imprudence and is the second dam of Emollient (Empire Maker), a four-time Gr.1 winner for Juddmonte. The third dam, Coup De Genie (Mr Prospector), won the Gr.1 Prix Morny and is a full-sister to the dual Gr.1 winner and top sire Machiavellian. Looking at her pedigree, the unraced Dream Of Genie was a real bargain at 120,000gns at the 2011 Tattersalls December Sale.

The nine-year-old mare has a two-year-old colt by Heart’s Cry and a yearling filly by Victoire Pisa. She visited Heart’s Cry again in 2016.

Starlit Love has a yearling full-sister to Dream Magic.

BRIGHT MOON (Jpn), 3f, Rulership – Lua Cheia (Fuji Kiseki) O/B: North Hills Co, T: Ryuji Chubo

The Maeda’s homebred Bright Moon (Rulership), fifth on her debut three weeks ago at Kyoto, found an easier spot and promptly delivered in the fillies’ maiden over 1800m on Saturday at Kokura. She is the third foal and winner out of the triple scorer Lua Cheia (Fuji Kiseki), a daughter of the high-class racemare Phalaenopsis (Brian’s Time), who won the Gr.1 Oka Sho and Gr.1 Shuka Sho and was third in the middle leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown, the Japanese Oaks. She also won two other Gr.1s and is a half-sister to the Japanese Derby winner and sire Kizuna (Deep Impact).

Lua Cheia has a two-year-old filly by Transcend and a yearling filly by Pyro. She visited Dunkirk in 2016.

ADRAMELECH (Jpn), 3c, Deep Impact – Sweet Hearth (Touch Gold) O: G1 Racing, B: Shadai Corporation, T: Sei Ishizaka

Adramelech (Deep Impact), not disgraced in four starts on turf, relished the switch to dirt and opened his account on Sunday in a maiden over 1700m at Kokura. He is the third foal and the first winner out of Sweet Hearth (Touch Gold), a Listed winner in Italy and France, who went close to a Gr.1 win in the Prix de la Foret. Sweet Hearth is a half-sister to the US Gr.1 winner Santa Teresita (Lemon Drop Kid).

Eleven-year-old Sweet Hearth has a two-year-old full-sister to Adramelech and a yearling colt by Orfevre.

The favourite Win Chatelaine (Daiwa Major) made a strong move from the back of the pack, running on well to score easily in the newcomers’ race over 1800m on Sunday at Tokyo. Her dam, Tanino Highclere (Kurofune), won a couple of minor Stakes races over 1200m and contested the Gr.1 Victoria Mile. Now updating her broodmare record to a perfect five from five, she is a half-sister to Win Kluger (Taiki Shuttle), who won the Gr.1 NHK Mile Cup before earning a place at stud. This is also the family of Deep Impact.

Tanino Highclere has a two-year-old filly by Symboli Kris S and visited Gold Ship last season.

He is a full-brother to four-year-old Admire Daio, who won the Listed Wakaba Stakes, but was not seen after he was unplaced in the Gr.1 Satsuki Sho. Their dam, Admire Marine (Kurofune), scored twice and has produced another winner by Deep Impact.
