T.J. Rosene

Head Coach- 5th Season

TJ Rosene is entering his fifth year

as the EC men's head basketball

coach. He is beginning his ninth year

as a head coach in the SSAC. In four

years at Emmanuel College TJ

Rosene has reached unprecedented

heights in school history. In four

years at Emmanuel he has amassed

an 88-46 record including three 20

win seasons in a row.

In 2010-2011: (26-8) This year was another banner season for

the Lions. Rosene lead the Lions to the schools first ever Southern

States Athletic Conference Championship in any sport. He also lead

Emmanuel to the NAIA National Tournament for only the second

time in school history- the first ever appearance came in Rosenes first

year at Emmanuel. Rosene is particularly proud of the team not only

for its on court accomplishments, but off the court as well. The 2010-

2011 Lions received the SSAC Sportsmanship Team of the Year

Award. Coach Rosene was named SSAC Coach of the Year and

NCCAA South Regional Coach of the Year. Rosenes first 4 year

recruit to Emmanuel ,Tedrick Hudson, eclipsed the 2,000 point mark

and was named a 3 time All Conference Player of the Year all while

carrying a 3.4 GPA. Rosene also landed another Freshman of the

Year in Michael Stanley. The point guard who was a first team all-

state player in Alabama lead the team in minutes played. Also for the

second time in 4 years Rosene had a player named a National NAIA

Champion of Character Recipient. This award was presented to Junior

Graham Maxwell (1 of 4 in the NAIA). Maxwell was also an All-

Region player who carries a 3.3 GPA. The Lions had 4 top 25

victories including an upset of #2 Mountain State. The Lions finished

Page 8: EC Men's Basketball Media Guide 2011-12

with a national ranking of #21 in the NAIA.

In 2010-2009: (21-11) This season produced the Lions first ever NAIA national ranking

getting as high as #20. The Lions were 20-5 at one point before losing their top 2 scores to injuries,

one being a season -ending injury and the other a 6 game injury. The Lions were in the top 4 in

points per game, offensive field goal %, and Defensive field goal percentage in the SSAC. Tedrick

Hudson was named all-conference.

In 2009-2008: (25-10) This particular was a year to remember in Emmanuel College history.

The Lions brought home the NCCAA National Championship. This was the first national

championship in any sport in school history. The Lions got better as the year went on. They won 12

of their last 14 games in route to the Championship. Rosene was named NCCAA National Coach of

the Year, South Regional Coach of the Year, and SSAC Coach of the Year. The lions lead the SSAC

in points per game. Tedrick Hudson and Ben Brimm were SSAC All-Conference players with

Hudson being named an NAIA All-American honorable mention.

In 2008-2007: (16-17) Rosenes first season at Emmanuel was a challenging, but rewarding

year. Rosene took over the helm late in the summer and brought in 12 new players. Being a young

team, they grew throughout the year before getting hot in the conference tournament and landing the

schools first ever NAIA national tournament bid. Ray Raines was named to the SSAC All-

Conference team. Two Lions were named to the All-Freshman team with Tedrick Hudson being

named Freshman of the Year. Micah Hayes was 1 of 4 to receive NAIA National Champion of

Character, award in the entire NAIA.

Coaching Reinhardt University: Rosene got his first head college coaching job at the age of

24. He led the Reinhardt University Womens program to new heights before taking over the mens

program for two years. In both the second and third year as the Womens head coach he lead the

program to back to back 20 win seasons for the first time in school history. Both were school records

for wins.

He was named Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Coach of the Year in 2004. He had 4 All Conference

players and 2 conference Freshman of the year (1 men and 1 women). He also coached the NAIAs

leading scorer in Brandon Jennings. Rosene left his alma mater in 2007 to take over at Emmanuel

College.

Derrick Mason

Assistant Coach- 4th Season

Derrick Mason, Derrick D. Mason, who had been an assistant

coach on the basketball staff at Elbert County High School for

the previous five seasons, joined the Lions coaching staff in a

similar capacity in August of 2009. A native of Atmore, AL.,

Mason is the son of Harold and Pat Mason. Mason's tenure as a

coach began as a lay coach at Elbert County High School.

During his tenure there he served under previous head coach,

Brian Turner and previous head coach Larry Brown. He was in

charge of player development which included, but not limited to, the spiritual, physical,

educational and social development of the athletes. Mason played an intricate part in the success

of the basketball program. This success included a trip to the AAA Elite 8 for the first time in

over 10 years. Mason also served as Area Director for various Boys & Girls Clubs across the

Southeast Region for six years. There he was responsible for the supervision and development

of over 2,000 youth between the ages of 4-21 in the areas of Character and Leadership

Development; Education and Career; Health and Life Skills; Sports Fitness and Recreation.

A unique combination of youth development and basketball experience has enabled

Mason to be a tremendous asset to Coach Rosene's coaching staff. Mason was a 2001 graduate

of Emmanuel College with a B.S. in Kinesiology. As an Emmanuel College Lion, he was a

starting power forward under Coach Jerry Boone. As an athlete, Mason was known for his size,

agility and extraordinary work ethic while leading the team in rebounding and setting the school

record for single season and single game blocked shots. Mason is in the process of pursuing a

M.A. in Coaching and Athletic Administration.

Off of the court Mason spends his time with his family and mentoring in the community.

Coach Mason is married to Dr. Rihana S. Mason who teaches psychology at Emmanuel College.

He enjoys grooming his three sons to be men of character and future athletes. Mason still has ties

to the communities of Franklin, Hart, Stephens and Elbert counties where he continues to mentor

young men as they prepare for successful college careers.

he 2011-2012 season promises to

be exciting for the Emmanuel

College Lions men’s basketball team.

The team returns five players from a

team that went 26-8, and won the

Southern States Athletic Conference

tournament championship. This marked

the first time in school history that an

Emmanuel athletic team of any sort has

won an SSAC conference tournament championship. Other highlights of last season include finishing

second in the SSAC East Division for the regular season, four victories of Top 25 teams including an

upset of then-number 2 Mountain State University who finished as the national runner-up, and the

Lion’s second ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. The Lion’s

showed no shortage of success away from the court either as they were named 2010-2011 SSAC

Sportsmanship Team Award. The team finished the year with a national ranking of #21 in the NAIA.

A big reason for much of the Lions’ success last year lies in head coach T.J. Rosene. Rosene

enters his fifth year as head coach of the men’s program, and ninth year as a head coach overall. He

was named 2011 SSAC Coach of the Year, as well as 2011 NCCAA South Regional Coach of the

Year.

“This should be an interesting and exciting year,” said Coach Rosene about the upcoming

year. “We have a unique mix of new and old players. I am really proud of, and excited about our

captains, seniors Graham Maxwell and Tiek Fields, along with sophomore point guard Michael

Stanley. They bring a lot to the team both on and off the court. I think they will help push the

younger guys to be up for the challenge.”

Rosene will be assisted by Derrick Mason, who enters his third season as assistant coach for

the Lions. Mason also serves as the head coach for the Lion’s JV program. Also, assisting will be

newcomer Jonathan Mattox who is a 2011 graduate of Emmanuel College. Mattox was also a part of

the 2010-2011 Lions’ conference championship team.

After losing six seniors from last year’s team, this year’s Lions team will be thin on

experience. Although they only have five players returning from last year’s team, three of those

players seek to play a major role. Michael Stanley, Asmatiek Fields, and Graham Maxwell are the

leaders of this year’s team.

T

Page 14: EC Men's Basketball Media Guide 2011-12

Stanley will be doing much of the play making this year as the team’s point guard. Much of

the offensive decision-making lies upon his shoulders, but he embraces challenges. The sophomore

played in all 34 games last year, and even led the team in minutes played. He was the team’s

fourth-leading scorer at just over 8 points per game, and was the team leader in assists. For all of

his contributions, Stanley was named SSAC Freshman of The Year as seasons’ end. Plus, after

his extraordinary play during the conference tournament, he was name to the All-Tournament

Team.

Fields and Maxwell are both four-year players for the Lion’s program. The two seniors

will be relied on heavily for on-court production, as well as leadership of a young Lions team.

Fields was one of the best sixth men in the conference last season. Even though he was not

considered a starter, he played huge minutes and was often making plays in clutch time. Known

as a very versatile player, Fields would often fill up a box score. He was the team’s third leading

scorer, bringing 9.5 points off the bench last season, and also led the team in steals at nearly 1.5

per game.

Field’s partner in crime Graham Maxwell is the team’s leading returning scorer. Maxwell

is a deadeye shooter who averaged nearly 11.5 point per game while shooting an outstanding

41.4% from three-point range last year. He was named to the SSAC East Division All-Division

Team, while also being named a National NAIA Champion of Character Recipient. This award

only goes to four players from NAIA schools throughout the country, who exhibited exceptional

character on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.

This year’s Lions team also returns guards Isaiah Tyus and Joey Moon. Tyus a junior,

and Moon a sophomore both played unselfish roles on last year’s team. Chad Callaway is a

newcomer to the varsity team, having two years of experience with Emmanuel’s JV program.

Other newcomers include Jeremy Burgess, Nathan Tew, Jason Smith, and Andre Holder

all of whom redshirted last season. Burgess and Tew look to make contributions on the

perimeter, while Smith and Holder look to bring an inside game. Also looking to bring an added

inside presence will be transfer Francisco Luano. Emmanuel also looks to get contributions out

of freshmen Austin Biggs, Luke Miller, and Johan Pennerat.

This year’s team looks to play a more up-tempo style than a year ago. It should be

another exciting year for the Emmanuel College men’s basketball team.

The Lions pulled off the

biggest upset of their

successful season. The NAIA

no. 2 ranked Mountains State

University Cougars fell to

the Lions 71-60 as the Lions were fighting to get back into

the national scene. A night in which a smaller Lions team

jumped out of their shoes to out rebound the bigger Cougars

41-32. The Lions only trailed at the beginning of the game

3-2 before making several runs and leading by 12 at the half

by a score of 40-28. The shoeless head coach said after the

game, referring to the Cougars, "That's a good basketball

team. They are so talented and I just thought our guys

battled. We did our job tonight. Guys stepped in from the

bench ready to play. We were patient and shared the

basketball. We just put together a really good effort tonight."

was not a conquerable fortress for

many teams last season.

Only Lee University can boast that

they beat the Lions on their

home court. Last season the Lions won 14 games and

lost only one. In the last three years, Lions have a record of 38-6

at the Lions Den Arena.
